Re: The Worst England Goalkeepers
Not sure I understand. England started the 70’s with Banks then moved on to Shilton and Clemence. Probably three of the best keepers in the world during that time

Sorry, the rest of my post has gone into the ether.
And I can't be arsed to type any more of my usual diatribes.

Peter Bonetti, "The Cat", didn't really cover himself in glory whilst guardian of the English net.
He was, however, very well respected in the Chelsea rank and file.

Re: The Worst England Goalkeepers
Not entirely sure what the thread is asking but I'll name Rob Greene, Paul Robinson, David James and Tim Flowers.
Re: The Worst England Goalkeepers
I'd swap David James out for Scott Carson, otherwise decent.

Worst mistake had to be Shilton not punching Maradona and the ball in the cheating bxxxxxx handball "goal" at the World Cup

Re: The Worst England Goalkeepers
Shilton was class at his best but outstayed his welcome by at least 25 caps

Yep. I wasn't sure and guessed
Maybe I need to start using Google more
Re: The Worst England Goalkeepers
The only thing I remember about Carson is him fumbling one in on a very rainy night against Croatia that prevented us qualifying for Euro 2008. It was the same night that coined the Wally with the Brolly phrase

Re: The Worst England Goalkeepers
I thought he was past it at Mexico 86, so it seems ridiculous that he still kept the shirt at Italia 90 at the age of 40. Although, to be fair to Bobby Robson there wasn’t many good alternatives. Chris Woods was the only one really.Oshkoshclaret wrote: ↑Wed Sep 10, 2025 12:38 pmShilton was class at his best but outstayed his welcome by at least 25 caps

Re: The Worst England Goalkeepers
Loads listed above.
I will add David Seaman, had lead in his boots, could never get off the ground.

Seaman, and Shilton, kept in the side far too long.

Re: The Worst England Goalkeepers
Main issue with Seaman was that his successors are pretty much all from the list above.
The natural choice of Nigel Martyn was knocking on by that point too.
I think even Richard Wright played a few games didn't he?
People slate Pickford, but he's been consistently decent for England.

Tony Waiters for us shouldn't be compared to when he played for England.

One of my favourite keepers Gordon West played 3 times for England.
