Our attacking strategy against Liverpool.

Post by Darnhill Claret » Sat Sep 13, 2025 9:33 pm

Great attacking wing back that Kerkez might be, I still think that his eagerness to attack, might leave a gap or two, that we might be able to exploit.

So, do we start Edwards, or do we start JBL and try to overload on the right, when the opportunity arises?

We put 11 men behind the ball and hope we concede less than 5 goals to stay out of the drop zone.

It'll be interesting to see how we line up tomorrow. Its plausible that we'll see Luis and Cullen at the base of midfield, Ugochukwu ahead of them and Hannibal on the right hand side.

I'd be amazed if Edwards starts though. If Hannibal doesn't start on the right, I'd expect JBL or Sonne will.

Set traps, hopefully turn the ball over when Liverpool are over committed forward, release the ball wide at pace, get balls whipped in and hope we can get Lyle to run across their CBs and score a goal(s) similar to what he did at Old Trafford.

I'm certainly hoping that we can patrol the edge of our penalty area better, with our defensive mid addition Tino.

Would like to see Jordan Anthony and Tchaouma as the two wide men with a midfield holding two of Cullen and Luis, then Ugochukwu in the old Brownhill role. Hannibal can be the fresh legs when one tires or is having a poor game

Brentford showed against Chelsea how you get to these teams. Let them overcommit then hit it long to the forward and have pace joining in. On several occasions Chelsea were caught short at the back. Liverpool will do the same and it's been shown they can be got at like that as well. If we sit back and have no outball and it keeps coming back at us because we can't hold it upfield we will be in real trouble. If we try and pass out and build we will be in trouble too as they have an exceptional high press.

Their achillies is Konate we get our fast players to take him on and we put Hannibal on Salah tackling him at every opportunity. We must get touch tight all the game and not allow Liverpool time on the ball.

Put Hannibal on Salah and we may be down to 10 men before HT - dont forget Oliver is in the middle
JBL to start in a midfield 5 with Les getting forward when he can

I think some are giving us less credit than we deserve. We took Man U at Old Trafford to the last second and gave Spurs a game in terms of chances.

No reason why we can't do the same today in our own backyard and give them things to worry about. Foster could be key.

I’d imagine we need Hannibal doing his angry little runs and hopefully unsettle them a bit , we’re not really a “ hard”
side so might not be easy to rile them, take a few yellows for the team etc . Hopefully we keep it simple as they’ll eat us alive on sloppiness . I’m expecting a really good game

Only problem with that is that Liverpool are better than Man United and Spurs.

Not expecting us to get close to their box. Anything under 0-3 is a half decent result.

My guess is Luis in for Bruun Larsen with Hannibal and Anthony as the wide options.

To counter that, they were both away and this time we're at home.

We have to try to start better. We have struggled in all our first three games so far. Easier said than done I know, against Liverpool..

Very true. Even against Sunderland it could have been 2-0 before we woke up.

That might just about work provided we board up the goals and stick a few rolls of barbed wire round the penalty area as well.
Owt less than 5 will be a minor miracle.

If I were Parker I would tell them to get the ball and kick it forward and when we get it forward we should kick it into their goal. It's a simple game.

The first positive is that we never attempted to play our goal kicks short, through our penalty area. I think, everyone of them went long.
That meant that we immediately nullified one of Liverpool's major threats.
Also relieved the pressure on our defenders.

Exactly, it was low risk football, recognising the high quality we were playing against. A much less disciplined, open game plan and we probably lose 3,4, even worse. It so very nearly worked, but all credit to Parker as he's clearly shown his ability to adapt to the opposition.

I expect is to be much more of an attacking threat next week against Forest.

How we move on from today will be compelling viewing, especially if we can manage to progress our steady improvement, and turn performance into points.
