We have literally just lost two of our best players from last year to bigger and better things, it’s our model if we sign young. We can’t complain because ALL our young talent will view it that way. On the flip-side we go up and discard plenty, including some who starred last year (I remain convinced Brownhill couldn’t be guaranteed starts).

We are in the yoyo food chain. Plenty of clubs like PNE, Derby and even Sheff Utd would love to be where we are on it.

Hardly the point , surely he should be saying it’s a honour to play for such a great club and can’t wait to show the fans what hes got .
He might be lucky he ever got the chance to play for a club like Burnley.
It'll be interesting to see what he's got in his armoury to support the lofty ambitions.

This is a classic example of someone seeing what they want to see without really acknowledging what people have actually said. As far as I can see nobody's complaining about him wanting to better himself.

It's the idea of saying it in the media before playing a single competitive game which isn't too wise and probably a bit disrespectful.

I don’t think anyone is criticising him for being truthful, but there are some truths that you don’t go out of your way to tell everyone. Whilst I personally won’t hold it against the lad, this was an unwise and quite disrespectful comment to make before even playing a competitive match for us.

For those advocating the truth, would you have liked Esteve to have come out in an interview to say that the only reason that he signed a contract extension at Burnley was to get a big pay rise and that he won’t be at Burnley next season? We all know that is broadly the truth, but is it necessary to tell everyone, and would it endear him to the paying supporters?

I saw Hartman’s signing interview and he came across really well. Seems like a good bloke. This comment was a bit misguided though and perhaps a lesson for him to learn about the difference in culture between the Netherlands and the UK.

Everyone will see it differently, but I quite like it. Shows some confidence and ambition.

Imagine if a player said "I signed for Burnley because it was the only offer on the table".

There are really only two types of players:
Those on an upward trajectory and those who are on a downward trajectory.

Kyle Walker would come into the latter category, but because he has come from such a high level he is still a major upgrade on what we have had.
He will not however be sold at a profit.
You would hope - for many reasons - that most of our signings are fairly young, ambitious and ultimately hoping to play Champions League or World Cup football at the very highest level.
I think that all Hartman is saying is that he will be working really hard and giving his absolute best for the club because he wants to reach the very top. That can only be good for us.
(On reflection, I suppose that there are also players who just stagnate - but you definitely wouldn't want to sign one of those)

Hi Rileybobs, may I suggest we can turn this around: Not just an opportunity for Hartman to learn about the difference in culture between the Netherlands and the UK, but also an opportunity for Burnley fans to learn something about the difference in culture between north east Lancashire and some footballers from the Netherlands. (I'm sure the same can also be applied to players from other countries, also. Perhaps, also ownership groups).

Personally if he’s quoted correctly in the article I think if we get relegated at the end of the season we won’t see him for dust.

I actually admire his statement. Pretty much every young player who signs for us wants to go on and compete for major trophies at some stage in their emerging careers. Even the most ardent Claret realises that is not likely to be us anytime soon.
Real Madrid just spunked £50 million on a young defender after one season at a so-called unfashionable club like Bournemouth so it is possible, and every player worth their salt should be aiming for it.

I would have preferred if the article had read that he’s delighted to be here and is going to do his best to help Burnley to get as high as they can in the league and that he wants to be one of the best full backs in the Premier League,it’s a team game he’s not trying to be the number one golfer in the world.

So for those who don't like his answer to the question, and we don't know how the question was framed, should he have said, 'I prefer not to answer that question'?
Why do we think the headline writer chose to go with that headline? I'm sure Hartman would not have used the term, 'stepping stone'.

We are, at best, a stepping stone. I admire that he's had the balls to say it. I hope that he plays well enough that he is proven right.

Ditto regarding him being proven right as it will turn out to be beneficial. There's nothing to suggest so far in his career that's he destined for the top it's been relatively steady although another knee injury setback. If he does end up being filed as a flop it could be a silly comment that comes back to haunt but let's hope it isn't.

Well yes, we can all be guilty of ignorance towards other cultures. But my point was more that he is going to be put in front of the media and broadcast/published to a UK audience and he would probably be better served (and no doubt will be trained) to be less candid when answering questions like this.

Like I say, I don’t have a particular problem with his answer and it isn’t a big deal. But it’s something that may (even wrongly) get some supporters on his back if he puts in a few poor performances. There are still people calling Chris Wood out for his ‘comfort zone’ comments which again were only him being honest.

Good business model for Burnley.
I hope that is one of our USPs when enquiring about up and coming young players.
If Burnley keep their promises to the players if & when they want to go ( provided we make a profit) that is a real asset.

Some things are better left unsaid.

(There's a song in there somewhere)

OK when he's shown his worth, but then again the fans would see and realise he's destined for better things.

Badly advised/ tutored is my take. Sneaky journalism to a largely untutored young lad.

Hartman was the first to break from the rest of the team and show he's appreciation to the fan's yesterday at the end of the game, gave he's shirt to a fan, and quickly made he's way off the pitch alone, seemed rather odd, anyone else notice or have any idea why. Nothing to do with the fact he does look quite a good acquisition and yes I agree 2 very good full backs, but just seemed rather odd.

very good fullback In terms of passing and tenacity, will be a worry on a yellow card Humphries may cover that and pires
