For the OP cannot find a Duckett Terrace in the Accrington Road area unfortunately, but have found reference to it on a couple of death certificates of people who died living on Duckett Terrace, one in 1938 and one in 1952.

Re: Duckett Terrace
I’d already checked on the geo maps. It’s not there.
A google search shows it as Habergham Eaves. With a lot of weddings and funerals listed for the early 50s. Unfortunately no locations.

I’ve checked on old maps and it was behind the new Starbucks very close to the railway. Looks like it could have been a back to back with Campbell Street, obviously long since demolished.

Re: Duckett Terrace
Duckett Terrace was a short terrace which linked Accrington Road (opposite Holy Trinity Church) with Westgate (opposite Junction Street).
There was only a couple of houses on it as I recall

Re: Duckett Terrace
Hello from the states.
I have been tirelessly looking at old maps for Duckett Terrace as my Great Great Grandfather owned a store(s) on the corner in the late 1800-early 1900s. Albert Bury. I believe I have located his plot in the Burnley Cemetery (A19732), but to date no traces of Duckett Terrace other than the information posted about it being close to Trinity Church. Looks to be a Coomes & Co. Boot store between the 2.
Thoughts?

Re: Duckett Terrace
There was a Duckett Street next to Dean Street which was demolished about ten years ago. It ran between Pomfret St and Blannell St. I’ve looked at the old OS and Lanark maps from both 1890 and 1910 and there’s no mention of Duckett Terrace in that area.Stanbill05 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 26, 2025 2:52 pmNear Dean St/Pomfret St if my fading memories visiting grandparents 35 years ago is still good.. Re: Duckett Terrace
Location shown here. Behind Barracks road backing onto the railway.
Not sure of the year it was demolished. 1960s sometime.

Re: Duckett Terrace
Thanks, Mike and Ricardo. Based on the angle of the store, I am assuming they were on Accrington Rd and the corner of Duckett Terrace. Long demolished, but now I have a footprint. Thank you all!

There are 2 inns marked on that first map. I'm assuming the one bottom left is The Angel?

Based on what I am seeing, I think you are correct. Or at least the Angel was it's most current name.Dark Cloud wrote: ↑Fri Sep 26, 2025 5:15 pmThere are 2 inns marked on that first map. I'm assuming the one bottom left is The Angel?

Re: Duckett Terrace
On a previous similar thread it became apparent that the gym (previously VW dealership) and the Travelodge are sitting on the site of the barracks and from what's being shown on those maps it looks like Campbell St, Duckett St and Clyde St are on the land now occupied by Starbucks and the petrol station. It seems like there were a lot of streets/houses on what is actually a pretty small, oddly triangular shaped piece of land backing onto the railway.

That would make the other The General Havelock?Dark Cloud wrote: ↑Fri Sep 26, 2025 5:15 pmThere are 2 inns marked on that first map. I'm assuming the one bottom left is The Angel?
Re: Duckett Terrace
No, the Havelock is diagonally opposite the Angel on the corner of Barracks/Accy Road. The other marked Inn on Barracks Road was the long gone General Campbell which closed in 1968.

Re: Duckett Terrace
No, as Meeaction says, the Havelock was on the corner diagonally opposite the Angel so I knew the other marked pub wasn't that as I remember it. Funnily enough my next question was going to be, what was that other pub which is marked and he's answered it, although I don't ever remember the General Campbell.

Re: Duckett Terrace
That's a good point and I did wonder that myself. With a name like The General Havelock (Crimean War?) and being basically directly outside the barracks, I'm assuming it had been there some considerable time and should have been there when that map was produced.Loyalclaret wrote: ↑Tue Sep 30, 2025 7:36 amThank you. Jack Nadin local historian and author writes
"The ‘Havelock’ was originally a small beerhouse that dated from around 1868, when it was owned by James Mitchell, though it didn’t have a name at this time. James Mitchell was still running the place in 1879 when it was selling Massey’s ales. The beerhouse was given a full license in 1930 when the license was transferred from the New Sparrow Hawk which was closed down in that year. The pub is listed as being at 4 and 6 Barracks Road in the mid 1940s, the landlord at this time was John Wilkinson. Today’s regulars might be somewhat surprised to note that the General Havelock is named after a teetotaller. The name of the pub commemorates the British leader in the Indian Mutiny that commanded the column of men who in September 1857 effected the relief of Lucknow. Major Henry Sir James Havelock was born in Bishopwearmouth in Sunderland, the second son of Henry Havelock a well-to-do ship owner."

Re: Duckett Terrace
As per a later answer, Beer Houses were not marked whilst PH, Inns and Hotels were, I think Beer Houses were literally private residences that had a licence to sell beer only, not wine or spirits. As the later answer from Nick says, the Havelock received a full licence much later.Loyalclaret wrote: ↑Tue Sep 30, 2025 7:36 amThank you. Is there a reason why it is not marked as an Inn?

Re: Duckett Terrace
I've not had time to check this out yet, but I'm pretty sure that Ducketts were a company that manufactured clay piping and fittings mainly for main drainage. I seem to recall seeing a kiln/kilns on site where Sutcliffes are currently off Burnham Gate. I'm also fairly sure
they made the tall glazed urinals as well as I can remember, as a lad, coming face to face with their name/logo whilst paying a visit !!!
If I get chance, I'll do a bit of digging unless someone beats me to it.

Re: Duckett Terrace
My great grandad used to work at Ducketts loading the kilns with the ceramics for firing. He lived with my great grandmother on Nairne Street, he would call in the Angel pub after work for a pint to cool offFunkydrummer wrote: ↑Tue Sep 30, 2025 12:19 pmI've not had time to check this out yet, but I'm pretty sure that Ducketts were a company that manufactured clay piping and fittings mainly for main drainage.
