No I’ve not been out of town buying fruit but an interesting development at Salford City FC where the fans have voted to ditch red and return to their primary shirt colour of orange.

Over 77% were in favour.

Good. Wrong decision to change to red and should never have been allowed to happen. Ego-driven, trying to create a mini-Man United. Even putting heritage to one side, orange looks way better and is certainly more identifiable. Neville and co have done the right thing by being transparent, holding their hands up, and involving supporters.

Arguably some parallels with Pace turning the Clarets into the Purples and changing the badge, which there doesn't seem to be much kickback from fans about which I find surprising.

I suppose with us it is still arguably Claret. If you look over our historical shirts we've had all different shades from plum to a reddy pink.

And the badge is still the old badge, just monochrome. A change yes, but not as drastic as Salford's was.

They changed to red when Lim and the Class of '92 took over. There's a decent episode of This Is Salford on YouTube where Beckham is in a meeting talking about how it was a mistake to change from orange, and that he knows from choosing pink for Miami how important a more uncommon, striking colour can be for branding. And he's spot on. Especially when that colour is traditional, as it is with Salford. I have no skin in the game at all but hope they change the badge too.

Possibly a sign of these divisive times, and potentially a far bigger slap in the former United boys faces than they (or many of the fans realise).

The Orange orders of Salford, Oldham and Manchester were the first to cross the Irish Sea after Colonel Stanley’s regiment, First Lancashire Militia, returned to Manchester from a tour of Ireland in 1799. The Orange Yeomanry acted as the areas police for many years, most famously at the Peterloo massacre but also in patrolling the slum areas of Irish Catholic immigrants… the biggest Catholic football club being Newton Heath, who became Manchester United.

I can't think of a successful colour change - it always feels tacky at best. Interested to hear if anyone can suggest one. I'm thinking possibly Luton a few years ago when they had a poll to decide which was the primary colour - white or orange but both of those are traditional colours for Luton.

Bayern Munich no longer feature blue on home kits in line with the wishes of supporters who think it's too close to 1860's sky blue.

Not sure when it happened but they were in white the first time I saw us play them. They have always retained a bit of blue & yellow though.

That's the one I mentioned earlier. Comes across quite well does Neville although it really was a stupid decision in the first place.

Can remember Sheff Wed. switching from stripes to a plain blue shirt with white sleeves but it didn't last long. Same when Arsenal changed from red with white sleeves to an all red shirt. Again it didn't last too long

Sadly. Endeared themselves to a nation as well. Revie copied Real Madrid and although have had a few hatchetmen (Camacho, Pepe and Ramos spring to mind) they've never put out a team of thugs like DL.

All shorts were either white, black or navy blue until Liverpool & Chelsea decided to adopt red & royal blue shirts. Both I think were 1964 but these two clubs didn’t change their colours.

pretty confident there isn't a man alive that has ever got every decision correct.......

Quite a few clubs change design. Millwall play in dark blue shirts, but have played in all white. Stockport in any combination of blue and white. Spurs regularly ditch their navy shorts for white.
Like Man Utd, never looked right when they played in black shorts. Same with us, all claret is an awful kit. Same when we have blue shorts.
But these days, not many if any change complete colours.

One team that’s got a mixture is HSV Hamburg. All their supporters wear blue, Black & white scarves etc. Their kit is white shirts, red shorts, blue shock with black & white trim. All due to the merger of 3 clubs.

Crystal Palace wore a Claret with yellow or sky blue pinstripe when I first knew them. Then they turned to white with Claret and blue stripes, then the same with red and blue stripes, and finally the current stripage.

Brighton have at times worn all blue top, but then tend to go down the leagues when wearing that.
