Tough one as I love both bands.
For me Joy Division edge it despite having see New Order well over a dozen times over the years. I was also lucky enough to get tickets for the So This Is Permanence gig at St Philips Church Macclesfield a couple of years ago

Favourite songs

New Dawn Fades
Decades

If you're preference is Joy Division there may be two up and coming Manchester bands for you to listen out for

Slow Readers Club
And
Ist Ist.

I saw Ist Ist a couple of weeks ago at a chapel in Salford and there set seemed to comprise of Warsaw through to later Joy Division styles of music which were compressed into an hour.

A thoroughly well spent tenner

I can't recommend the Slow Readers Club highly enough. It's a group formed out of the ashes of the Manchester group Omerta. I've seen then many times in the last two years

Agree with bop , if you grew up in that era it felt like the same band just changing line ups.

Joy Division.

Handful of decent songs by New Order, but once you get them out the way you're into a cross between OMD and the Pet Shop Boys. (Nowt wrong with OMD mind)

Some truly forgettable padding in their albums.

I saw Joy Division at Eric's in Liverpool just a few months before Ian's suicide. Great memories!

The legacy of both bands will be celebrated at The Grand, Clitheroe, on Saturday night.
Transmission (Joy Divison) and True Order (New Order) in a double header, tickets £8.50.

Saw Transmission at the Artisan, they were very good. I like both bands but hard to compare the music.
I've just read Bernard Sumners autobiography, thoroughly enjoyed it and it takes you right up to 2014.

Just been reading that New Order have hooked up with Accy roads finest, moorhouses. To produce a beer!

It's called Stray Dog 4.2% and is described as a golden ale.

Another burnley connection was that Martin Hannett used AMS studio gear when recording Unknown Pleasures began.

In terms of innovation, you'd have to say that they're both important bands for the Manchester music scene.

I'm personally much more drawn to The Smiths, for all Morrisey's self obsession, he's an incredible vocalist.
