Re: Your childhood favourite footballer
[quote="ClaretTony"]Uwe Seeler - I was sort of fascinated with this idea of us playing teams from another country. Not my favourite footballer, not sure I had one, but one whose career I followed. Even today I still feel an attachment to Hamburg in that they are my favourite German team. Good news last Sunday too, they beat Hertha Berlin 1-0 although they are still in the relegation play-off

Being a centre half/ left back but right footed as a kid I idolised Paulo Maldini. Now Flanagan could do with youtubing him!

Gary and Paul Mabbutt of Bristol Rovers & Bristol City, but only coz they both went to my school.
Also liked ASA Hartford he was inspirational, born with a hole in his heart but still made it as a pro and international.

If so, I've not seen it. He's still a regular at the Hamburg games. Given some of the performances they should probably get him back onto the pitch, even if he is 80.BleedingClaret wrote:Tony

Tony I've checked with Pete, and I'm correct, and it is a really good watch, not just the football but the interviews are good especially the gentleman that I think is Uwe Seeler he is really engaging.
Worth asking Pete and getting a copy.

Another shout for Gianfranco Zola.
The first piece f work I wrote in primary school must have been about what you did at the weekend or iver the summer. The only word you can work out from my 4 year old scrawl is Zola.

Re: Your childhood favourite footballer
Remember being fascinated by the 1974 World Cup so Johann Cruyff for me too. It was in those finals v Sweden that he produced the 'Cruyff turn'.
Other tournament highlights:
Haiti taking the lead v Italy
Zaire player running out of the wall and kicking the ball away v Brazil
Only ever competitive meeting of East and West Germany - which East Germany won
The final - Jack Taylor awarding Holland a penalty in the first minute

Wizards of the dribble Jimmy Johnstone and Charlie Cooke...I also developed a bit of a fascination with the 1970s Chelsea cup final team and as well as Cooke loved to watch Ian Hutchinson's long throws, complete with "windmill" arm action, and thought Peter Osgood was a very cool man.
Stan Bowles too.....love a good maverick.

Gary Lineker, Peter Beardsley and a bit later Big Duncan Ferguson. The first two were fantastic footballers and Dunc was an animal, I realised how much I liked him when I started making excuses for his rough play that you pull everyone else up on.
