I thought Barton had a shocker today.

Hendrick was poor for me today, he was poor in his first half dozen games, started to play consistently well and has gone backwards since returning from his ban.

Not a bad player, but no central midfielder for me. Made a mistake for their first by panicking, then gave the ball away to nearly gift them with the second.

Put him on the right & Defour in the centre (does not belong on the left wing).

We're using square pegs in round holes if you ask me.

Both him and Brady baffling signings. Relegation veterans.

Thought he started well but disappeared after about 15 minutes. He owes us a performance that's for sure. They all do after that atrocious second half!

Unfortunately, he's being used much more defensively with Joey in the middle and the 2 of them are hardly ever over the halfway line when we attack. When he was playing well, he was bombing forward supporting Vokes when we played one up or making runs in the channels with the 2 up (the wonder goal); we are relying on Arfield and Boyd to support the attack and unfortunately, they both lack severe quality at this level hence no win in a while. I hope Jeff gets instructions to play more box-box than he is doing now and getting involved further up the pitch; think today he, amongst others, was too much in away mode.

Bang on, diamond - at last, someone who actually watches the player to gauge his overall contribution to the game. Hendrick grafted his wotsits off today but just as you expected him to get his head down, take someone on and go for it, he almost pulled up and then looked for a safe pass. He's clearly been instructed to do this against the likes of Spurs especially.
I would hope for a bit more venom v. Stoke.

Made to look poor against a pretty classy outfit. His partner, Barton, folded.

Of course he's a central midfielder. Man of the match there according to Sky in our game at Liverpool a couple of weeks ago. The mistake for the first goal was unfortunate but it was nothing to do with him being a central midfielder or not. Ironically the very fact he was in that position is indicative of his importance to us as a physical presence who is decent in the air.

Im not averse to seeing him on the right and Defour in the centre, although Defour's 15 minutes yesterday was far worse than anything Hendrick produced.

Barton was the midfield weak link yesterday.

The problem with all of our midfield is that all of them would be better in a 5.

Who was responsible for picking up Dele Ali out of the defensive midfielders Spice?

Our system yesterday wasnt set up to deal with them. Should have had 5 in midfield to nullify a side with two world class attacking middielders.

With Brady, Defour and Arfield would still have had enough in fact more creativity.

The strict answer is we were zonal as usual so noone per se. Depends where he was on pitch. But to try and answer:

First half, the full backs were responsible for that. Spurs set had the same set up as against Chelsea so same rules would apply.

Second half, either Barton or Hendrick or the centre halves depending where he was on the pitch. But Barton was the deeper midfielder, so he'd be in his zone more often.

How to clear a ball from danger. It's been going on for 125 years. Why wasn't Hendrick trained to boot the ball over the other side of the pitch rather than back out towards the centre circle?

Not Hendrick's fault entirely, he should have the training of knowing what to do. OK the ball might have bobbled and he could have scored an own goal, but the chances are, if he'd booted it straight, it would have gone for a throw-in, over by the Bob Lord stand.

And then you suggest playing Hendrick wide which is very much a square peg in a round hole

Sounds a bit Sunday league that Spice. We must have had a strict plan for picking up the best goal scoring midfielder in the league.

Im not averse to Hendrick playing wide in a midfield 4 - he's done it for Ireland and it does make more sense than Defour playing there.

But it is a fair point that his best and main position is as a central midfielder, and he's been pretty good there this season.
