I'd take Smalling off their hands, he's a good player who's lost his way a little bit.
Jones would be worth having just for the gurning he does.

Re: Bidding war for £25m-rated Michael Keane
On his retirement, Sir Alex Ferguson claimed that Phil Jones would go on to become Manchester United's greatest ever player. No wonder Fergie opted for retirement. I suspect Jones, and Smalling, are on their way out at OT though which does leave a gap. I just hope Keane goes to a club where he's going to be a regular starter.HelloHiGoodbye wrote:From his point of view, it must be brilliant to go back to United. His boyhood club. They're crying out for a centre half and he's better than Smalling and Jones. He and Bailly could compete with any centre half pairing around. I'd be a little disappointed if he went elsewhere to be honest.

Couldn't personally give a fart where he goes after us.
He can sit on the bench at Rochdale for the next 3 years for all I care.
I only give a monkey's about what he does for us.

Jones is a better player than Smalling, but his injury record is appalling.

I'm still astounded that we could be selling a player for that much money.
All our players are worth that. At least for the passion and determination!

Kid has been brilliant for Burnley. We should be proud to see him move on. He will no doubt be back playing against us in few months.

I think Jones is an exceptional player when fully fit and if Keano joins MU, I can see the fruits of a formidable partnership developing.

Tripps and Mee, I did say Manchester.ClaretTony wrote:I'm more and more convinced that he's going back to Old Trafford but I hope he's not being as badly advised as he was a year ago when his advisers and family were trying to get him to Leicester.
I'm not sure I want much else from United though, Keane apart our record of getting players from there has hardly been successful.
Were we ever in line to sign Guidetti or was he always just here on loan. It seems that long ago I can't remember.

Re: Bidding war for £25m-rated Michael Keane
Guidetti was only a loan I think but he was signed by Brian Laws and then returned to City when Eddie Howe came in. Whether that's because Howe didn't want him, or because City wanted him back I don't know. He was highly rated so I doubt it was anything other than a loan.Colburn_Claret wrote:Tripps and Mee, I did say Manchester.

we will need a bidding war, if he goes to United for 25 million we will get about 17 million for him due to the sell on clause

And if he goes anywhere else for the same money we'll get the same. If he's going back there it puts us in a stronger position to negotiate that.Vegas Claret wrote:we will need a bidding war, if he goes to United for 25 million we will get about 17 million for him due to the sell on clause
If he did go for £25 million then United would be entitled to a quarter of £23 million, the profit, which would be £5.75m leaving us with over £19m.
Re: Bidding war for £25m-rated Michael Keane
£30million plus Danny Ings from Liverpool would do nicely! haha

Re: Bidding war for £25m-rated Michael Keane
So basically, if man utd are in effect due a 25% discount on the purchase of Keane, then it is in both of our interests for them to overpay by a further 10-20% at least. Right?
E.g - Man Utd get him for £40m, of which £10m is due back.
Liverpool buy him for £40m, of which £10m is due to Man Utd. Either way our gain is £30m
If Man Utd buy him for £50m then £12.5m is due back, therefore getting him for £2.5m less than their rivals and we pocket £7.5m more.
Or am I really, really, incredibly, dim.

We should tell Man Utd that the more they pay for him then the more they get back.
Why sign him for £25m and only get £5.75m back? Sign him for £100m and get £24.5m back!

If Utd do have a 25% clause then surely we'd tell them that we would rather sell to Liverpool or another club as we'd get more money.

Utd still get the sell on fee if he joins a different club

If we sell him for £47m, then he becomes our record signing on the same day as he becomes our record sale!

All these comparisons to Stones etc but Stones had 3 years left on his contract when he signed for City.
I can only imagine Man Utd would pay £25m because they're getting a quarter of that back and it's enough to keep everyone else at bay?

It would be brilliant for us if someone other than Man Utd started the ball rolling otherwise this much anticipated so called bidding war may never even materialise!
Even if that were to happen, I'm fairly certain the fee won't reach anywhere near the same as the much maligned (on here) John Stones.
If he goes, we are going to make the biggest profit on any player in our history and probably one that will stand for a very, very long time. If he stays to see out his contract, this message board will self destruct!

Re: Bidding war for £25m-rated Michael Keane
Depends what Man United are offering. If Keane says he wants to go to Man U no matter what, so Man U offer a low figure, Burnley's only bargaining chip is to say that he's not leaving and isn't guaranteed a first team place. What Dyche says is a negotiating position, not a statement of intent.

Re: Bidding war for £25m-rated Michael Keane
Well, because it means waiting another year for us to sort out our defence and losing out on 20 or so million.
We could get relegated next year, with or without Keane, and that extra cash will be a boost for us in the EFL.

Don't disagree with SD's comments. Whilst I don't normally advocate letting players run down their contract, I'd make and exception with MK as he is one of 3 players who really does make a difference.

But if we're going off what could happen, by the same token, we could go down by not replacing him with enough quality. If Dyche doesn't currently have anybody lined up who he thinks can do the job in Keane's absence, keeping him next season could also be the difference between staying up and going down.ClaretAndJew wrote:We could get relegated next year, with or without Keane, and that extra cash will be a boost for us in the EFL.

I don't believe he is irreplaceable to be honest. I think he's a very good player who can continue to improve. However Dyche knows what makes a defender - just look at how all of our back line have improved under their time with Dyche. Whoever we bring in will go on to do very well, I'm sure.Steve1956 wrote:Keep him we are rich enough to absorb the 25 million loss when his contract runs out,he is simply quite irreplaceable

It wasn't long ago that some on here were saying that Tarkowski is the next Michael Keane. He had looked very good in some cameo appearances throughout the season but has looked less solid in the last few games. However, I wouldn't hold that against him. It's tough to judge him when his defensive partner is Long. At the end of the day, neither have had much experience of the Premier League. Tarkowski has all of the attributes required to be a very good centre back for us. We've just got to be patient and let Dyche work his magic over the summerSteve1956 wrote:Tarks has looked nowhere near as composed as MK in the last few games,I think we are clutching at straws with Tarkowski,he's slow and just hoofs the ball all the time, not half the player MK is and never will be

Re: Bidding war for £25m-rated Michael Keane
Tarkowski has all the attributes to make a fine central defender apart from pace.
My feeling is that Keane's speed was responsible for snuffing out danger often before it manifested itself and the goals we have conceded in the last three games have exposed us in this regard.
We might need to a more flexible approach to our defensive formation next season depending on who replaces Keane, it will be very difficult for us to unearth a like-for-like - after all he's seen as one of the best three or four central defenders in England at the present time.
Wouldn't be surprised to see us play with three centre halves on occasions next season, though it will depend on the quality at our disposal.
