Can't argue with that, although kightly will be a definite leaver whilst Arfield maybe just a possible IMO.

Definitely maybe
Re: Ins and outs of current squad
Surely we should keep one of Boyd or Arfield. I fear that too many changes could be detrimental to the make-up of the team.

Shopping list -
Left back
Centre back (maybe two)
2 centre midfielders
Winger
Forward (a number 10 type who is comfortable with the ball) or two
If it isn't all done by mid July, I'll come on here and moan and moan about a lack of ambition and dry powder.

Re: Ins and outs of current squad
Very interesting and when listed like that it brings home how low on numbers we could be at the start of next season, given we generally like to do business late in the window these days.
No wonder SD has taken every interview to speak about recruitment over the last few weeks, he knows he's got another big task on his hands.

Clucas and Adam for midfield. Maybe Ledley.
No idea on a winger.
Jon Walters.

Re: Ins and outs of current squad
Marney, Barton and Defour need replacing to give us adequate quality / back up / potentially the ability to play a five more readily. As it stands we have Westwood and Hendrick.
Two full backs are needed be they back up or upgrades (both have had good seasons but no reason we shouldn't look to improve if someone becomes available.
Centre half suddenly looks a worry. We need one quality signing in there as a minimum but potentially two. Our depth at centre half isn't as good as is needed.
One winger with some pace so that we can offer something different and stretch teams on both sides.
A number 10 who can link midfield and attack.
On top of that would depend upon outgoings.

Re: Ins and outs of current squad
I agree with Bin On Turf's shopping list. I think 6 needed.
Phil Bardsley on a free anyone? Right-back but could cover at left back if needed. 32 in June though. Robertson from Hull, Maguire at Hull, Will Hughes from Derby, Cairney from Fulham, Jota from Brentford. Joe Ledley on a free as cover? Connor Wickham? Clucas (Hull) seems a Dyche type player somehow. Fabien Delph at Man City, maybe wages too high? Charlie Adam on a free. Stephen Ireland on a free at Stoke, again possible cover (what happened to him, still only 30 and has hardly played of late). Darren Fletcher on a free I think i read? Johnny Howson from Norwich... just a few realistic options. Struggling to think of good wingers at a realistic price. Feel we need to spend big on a striker, maybe from Europe. One or two of the free transfers with a handful of smart, big money signings should improved the squad.

Re: Ins and outs of current squad
We should get £25m for Keane and say minimum £5m for Defour. So that's £30m to add to the pot. We spent £35-40million on transfer over the course of this season, so £50 million might not be unrealistic. Obviously some of that should be saved for January if needed.

Re: Ins and outs of current squad
with the loss of Marney and Barton it's a MF general we lack. Westwood and Hendrick are OK but neither grabs the game and takes it over, ordering team mates about or leading by example. This is what we have lacked since Joeys suspension.
I doubt we'd have lost a home lead to West Brom or West Ham with either of the two on the field. As neither is back soon we desperately need a boss. Of all those mentioned Charlie Adam is the closest.

I don't think that Adam would get about the pitch like Marney or Barton.
He has all the other attributes though and is technically better.

Re: Ins and outs of current squad
It's all hypothetical, but we would most likely only sign all those on that list, (or players of similar calibre or value) if we sold Keane, Defour and Gray, and you would hope that this would raise around £45,000,000 - (maybe more), so a net spend of less than £60 million, and therefore not wildly extravagant. (As you suggest though, I would imagine that a net spend below 50 million is more likely.)Vegas Claret wrote:Those ins would cost 100 million plus, we'll be lucky if we spend 30-40 imho

Re: Ins and outs of current squad
if those changes occured, the entire shape and personality of the team would be huge.
When Dyche talks about a learning curve, and players gaining from the experience of playing at this level and being together as a tight unit which breeds team spirit, then it is more or less starting afresh !
I realise if the replacements are similarly experienced then at least that solves one problem but it will be very difficult to rebuild an effective team in 12 weeks surely. Some complained about Tarks last week, but without Keane and Mee, the back four stability had altered considerably, I think he can step right in, he's an excellent player and don't believe any blame can be attributed to him, but naturally it will take time.

76 million + wages = 100 million plus
Re: Ins and outs of current squad
Based on this season's profit and 25m for keane we're looking at a pot of 200m.
Surely we'll at least match this season's spending of 40m ish.
Wages go up to say 50m. Leaves quite a surplus.

Re: Ins and outs of current squad
Andrea Ranocchia is apparently surplus to requirements at Inter and has just had half a season in the PL so he wouldn't be an unknown quantity. He's got 20+ Italy caps and is 29 years old. For a CB that's a good age. Rumoured fee of around £9m. He'd be on my radar big time. Good replacement for Keane with money spare to strengthen elsewhere.

We will have commited about half of the £100mill on transfer and agent fees.
Can't see there will be much left after wages NI and payments to IR

Re: Ins and outs of current squad
I wouldn't be surprised to see Flanagan stay as cover for both fullbacks. I think he's shown this year that he won't be good enough to get back in the Liverpool team and he'd be a fairly minimal fee.

Re: Ins and outs of current squad
We are in a catch 22 situation. We can't really get rid of anyone before we sign their replacement. As most of our signings are done or deadline day it leaves very little time to put anyone in the shop window.
We all know that some positions need strengthening, but to let players go, and then find we get gazumped on the replacement would leave us in the ****.
I'm glad it's not my job.

Re: Ins and outs of current squad
Rather than talking in specifics, which is a crystal ball game none of us can win, I'd tend to talk in general terms at this stage.
First thing to say is that at the minute, the squad does carry some deadwood. There are players, like Long(s) and presumably Ulvestad, who aren't near to becoming first team regulars and I think the time has probably come for them to go. I'd like to see those squad places freed up.
Secondly, one thing this squad is really light on, especially if Arfield and Flanagan both depart, is players who are flexible. I can't really think of anyone apart from possibly Tarkowski and Barnes who can really operate in more than one position, even across midfield. One thing we could really do with this summer is a couple of flexible, if uninspiring signings who can give the squad some real ballast. I've mentioned David Meyler before as that sort of player - can cover right back, centre back as well as being primarily a central midfielder - and I think we could do with a couple of players in that ilk.
Thirdly, whilst we will certainly have plenty of money to spend this summer, especially if we realise north of 50 million in transfer fees as seems likely, not every player we sign will be a marquee player. We will need to mix and match and box clever. With the possible exception of a striker (they're hardest to find, particularly if we're looking for a partner for Gray) we should be saving our bigger money for players under the age of 25 who have real resale value. Clucas is just about at the top of my wish list and he ticks this box. Robertson might be another and we might be looking for another marquee winger. But we're going to need to wrap some steady heads around this - a Meyler, a Craig Gardner, a Jon Walters etc. Our money simply won't go far enough for us to do differently.
Finally, I think we have two crucial decisions to make to start the summer. The first is whether Gray is realistically going to re-sign. If not, we need to plan to replace him, and that will mean focussing on particular types of forwards who don't come cheap. Secondly, we need to decide if Tarkowski is good enough to replace Keane after his recent slightly dodgy audition. If we're backing him, then we can look for another Keane at centre half - someone with the raw physical attributes to perhaps play there and right back, who can really push Tarks from the start but who isn't necessarily coming in with the expectation of being first choice (say, Liam Moore). If we're not, I suspect we're looking for a proper first choice specialist centre back. Getting that spine right again is the core thing we have to do this summer.
