New Phone
New Phone
I'm up for renewal soon and I'm torn between the Samsung S8 and Oneplus 5. I like the curved screen of the S8 but the Oneplus has 8GB RAM so will be lightening fast. It also has a great camera apparently, although I'm sure the S8 camera and speed will be adequate enough for my needs. Oneplus is about £200 cheaper but I currently own an S6 so I know where I am with Samsung.
Decisions, decisions. Does anybody on here own either phone? If so, I'd appreciate your thoughts!

Have Samsung fixed their battery issues?
Re: New Phone
I think that issue was just with their Note 'phablet' which they ceased production of.Sidney1st wrote:Have Samsung fixed their battery issues?

Re: New Phone
I had oneplus' 1, 2, 3 and x.
Great phones in terms of performance and almost infinite customisability.
What I would say is that there were always little niggles that took oneplus a while to address. Silly little things like the Bluetooth wouldn't work properly with my car.
Hopefully they've ironed out the kinks for the 5.

Re: New Phone
I have a Oneplus 3 and previously had the Oneplus 2. The improvement of the 3 over the 2 was massive so I'd hope the 5 shows similar progress. That'll be tough because the 3 is a terrific phone.
Although the 5 isn't quite the absolute no brained bargain the 3 was, it's still way cheaper than the Samsung so would be my choice.
The dual sim feature was a big selling point for me. No longer need to carry two phones around (work and personal). Surprised only the Chinese manufacturers seem to offer this.

My contract runs out soon and I have the Galaxy S6. I'm finishing the contract and going PAYG, sticking with the phone I have. My contract with 3 started at around £32.00 a month 18 months ago - it's now risen to knocking on £50 without going over any limits. They're as bad as Sky with their price increases, so sod them, I'll go with credit, free minutes and free texts.

How do the dual sims work? Can both sims be switched on at the same time i.e. could you receive a call on either number at any given time? Or do you have to switch between them?Claret_Jules wrote:I have a Oneplus 3 and previously had the Oneplus 2. The improvement of the 3 over the 2 was massive so I'd hope the 5 shows similar progress. Re: New Phone
Both are on at the same time. You can even designate one for data use and one for phone calls. If you're on the phone with one and someone calls on your other sim, it just acts like call waiting.Fretters wrote:How do the dual sims work? Re: New Phone
Good Morning all,
I upgraded my phone in January to the Oppo r9S. I would recommend to anyone for a more reasonably priced phone.
16 megapixel camera front & back, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage (expandable via micro SD card), 6GHz processor, 5.5 inch screen, also comes with screen protector & case as standard, all for half the price of an iPhone 7s.
The big selling point for me (transferring from Android to iPhone) was that the layout and operation is very similar to the Apple product, but without the restrictions of Apple software.
Well worth a look, in my humble opinion!
Cheers all

Re: New Phone
I've had an S2, S4 and S6 so was looking forward to the S8. However, when I came to look at contracts today I found the S8 was £57.99 per month which, now I've retired, is surplus to my previous requirements. I asked the question and an S7 with 3Gb pm, unlimited texts and calls and free international roaming round Europe, North America, Canada, Mexico and a couple more sunspots was £37.99 pm. I took it and the performance increase between the S6 and S7 is huge so I see no downside. Happy camper!

Re: New Phone
They both work at the same time, Fretters. There's a nice little app called Dual Sim Selector which saves your dialling preferences so knows which sim to use when you call a contact. A lot of texting apps support dual sim now too. I use Textra, it's really simple, just one tap next to send allows you to select sim 1 or 2. Once done, it remembers for that message thread.Fretters wrote:How do the dual sims work? You can only have data switched on on one sim at once though. That's a good thing though as it allows you to switch between the two sims, say every couple of weeks, and make use of both sims data allowances. This stops me using up my allowance on either sim and incurring charges.

Re: New Phone
The Oneplus 3 wasn't available on a contract so I had to stump up the £309 (bargain btw). Best thing I ever did though and I'll stick to sim only from now on. My contract is £8.50 a month with EE and is a rolling 30-day term.FactualFrank wrote:10 of the best, here: http://viralventura.com/top-10-smartphones-2017/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The prices of contracts with phone included aren't great value. I know people who are paying £70 a month, for two years, for an iPhone 7. It's bonkers!

Re: New Phone
Thanks for the responses, folks.
Bin Ont Turf, there's always one to post that hilarious comment when it comes to mobile phone threads. Unfortunately, as an e-commerce business owner, I need constant access to the internet. so a phone that purely calls and texts wouldn't cut it for me. As for the rest of the fancy smart phone features, yes, I'm probably just being greedy!
BennyD, as I currently own the S6, I'm also considering just plumping for the S7. It might not be the latest model but it'll still be an improvement on what I have, and cheaper.

I'd wait for the Google Pixel 2 - due September/October.
I currently have an iPhone and will be upgrading to the Pixel when it comes out.

RAM isn't what makes a phone fast, it just means you can open tons of **** at the same time and have 200 ******* Chrome tabs open on your phone, along with every other program you've ******* opened for the last two weeks before giving it to your son to fix it's running ******* slow.Fretters wrote:I'm up for renewal soon and I'm torn between the Samsung S8 and Oneplus 5. But without looking at the spec i'd choose the OnePlus since in the past they're have brilliant value for money over Samsung's flagship phones.

Apparently the Pixel 2 won't have a headphone jack. No idea why not. Like, Apple, it just seems like they're making something tiny needlessly different.LDNBFC87 wrote:I work in the phone industry (if that's worth anything?)

Re: New Phone
I've just got a Google pixel and can highly recommend it. Been with Samsung all my life which were great, however my last one, the S5, gave me nothing but problems. Battery life was poor, the thing used to get very hot and would constantly shut down on me. It also felt very flimsy and plasticky. The Pixel has a metal body - amazing camera - and can hold enough charge for 2 days.
Didn't realise there was a Pixel 2 coming out - maybe I should have hung on.

Re: New Phone
I was seriously interested in getting a Oneplus3 however my timing was poor and they ended up being off sale when I wanted one, and I didn't want to go on O2.
I instead went for a Huawei P9, and to be honest, it's brilliant. Great camera, fast as, and I have no problem with the android 'skin' which a lot of reviews I read said were its only downfall. It feels really good quality too.
Good budget high end phone.

Re: New Phone
I recently picked up a OnePlus 3T for £320 and it seems pretty decent. Looks and feels premium compared to the ~£200 phones I normally get and pretty decent specs. I looked at the OnePlus 5 but the extra hundred odd quid didn't seem worth it for me, although it looks like a lot of phone for the money compared to the major brands.
I do know a few people who've had niggles with the OnePlus and it has taken a while to get sorted, that's part of the price you pay for the cheaper brand.
I did like the old Nexus phones but the Pixel range just seems a bit expensive now compared to what they used to be (although if you're comparing to Apple/Samsung then not so much the case).

OnePlus. Samsung are bloody awful, well at least mine was. Had no end of trouble with it even with a memory card. Which would be understandable if I was a gamer or used it for anything other than the very basics.
