Re: Dunkirk
I met Harry Styles about 18 months ago, I was at the J&S motorcycle store between Northwich and Cheshire.
It was around midday on a wet Wednesday, hardly anyone was there, he was with his mate on his beautiful modified Triumph Bonneville. I'd just stopped for a brew in the cafe at the shop and so had he and his mate.
I struck up a conversation with him about his bike.....I didn't realise who he was!
After about five minutes I realised who it was, but I didn't let on.
We chatted for about ten minutes as we supped our brews.
Totally grounded, very pleasant young man.

Went this evening. Very good script and really enjoyed the film.
Something I rarely take notice of in a film is the musical score but this one blew me away and definitely adds to the tension in various scenes.

If there was ever a more confirmed reason to get rid of him?
That is of course unless you all feel UTC bait clicks are more important.

Saw it on the Imax tonight with the family.
It's brilliant.
Love the lack of dialogue bits

Totally agree. It was pretty much constant for the entire film...not many silent moments at all. It will definitely win some awards.JohnMac wrote:Went this evening. Very good script and really enjoyed the film.

Re: Dunkirk
Very good, but the historical pedant in me was slightly disappointed in some bits.
Not normally a fan of CGI, but when the Spitfire was flying along the beach at the end, that would have been the time to use it as there are plenty of historical pictures showing just how much "more" was going on around and on the beach.
But still a very good film

Re: Dunkirk
There's no CGI involved. The Spitfires are real, okay maybe CGI to make them look like more Spitfires, but it's all natural otherwise. I was led to believe there was little to no CGI. All the soldiers on the beach were real people. Quite like Ghandi and typically brilliantly British!Lancasterclaret wrote:Very good, but the historical pedant in me was slightly disappointed in some bits.

Went to see this Tuesday evening after reading the posts on this forum. Action packed and Tense with great special effects (as has been mentioned)
Wouldn't recognise Harry Styles if I fell over him, so didn't detract anything for me.

Re: Dunkirk
Great film.
Saw it with 5 friends, thought the my wife and her friends who had no knowledge of Dunkirk would have been bored but no they enjoyed it. They mentioned their anxiety levels going through the roof which is a compliment to the film I think.
The scenes and scores were captivating, so much so I didn't fall alseep in the cinema!
Only critism was not having some text at the end to explain the enormity of the evacuation.
Visited the beaches and museum last year after the England v Wales

Re: Dunkirk
After hearing good reviews we were planning on watching this this week however my Grandad passed away this week and I get emotional enough when watching war films as it is without thinking about him going through that
I'll watch it eventually though, whilst having a glass of his Famous Grouse

Re: Dunkirk
Went last week really enjoyed and would recommend to anyone. Edge of seat stuff, non stop action. The aerial scenes were superb, a film that will stand the test of time in my opinion. Two niggles though, the jumping of time between shots is confusing at first, ie a person is talking on a boat in daylight and a few seconds later they are in the sea at night. The other annoying thing is as others have said, no CGI so no sense of scale. It looks like the story of a couple of hundred people on a beach. Don't let this put you off, a great film nonetheless.

Good man, wilks, and all the best to you and your family.
I'm off to see it tonight and am intrigued by the many references to the film score, an integral part of any film that is generally ignored by most film-goers. I'll payparticular attention to it.

Yeah, and its great that they used real planes and stuff , but it should probably have been used when the Spit was flying over the beach at the end. There's no CGI involved

Re: Dunkirk
I bought the book to read on the plane when I go on my Holidays to Mallorca. Think I should have booked to go to Australia as the book is over 700 pages with very small font sizeSammyBoy wrote:I saw this last night and I thought it was brilliant. Definitely not the typical war epic but it builds the story and the tension throughout to a stunning ending. I read the Sebag-Montefiore book on Dunkirk when I was at college and doing a project on the Battle of France (of which Dunkirk was the conclusion), good book and I'd recommend that too.

Re: Dunkirk
Relieved they've made a decent job of an important event during ww2. Look forward to seeing it. Been to Dunkerque many times and you'd never guess anything like this occurred there.
Of the subject a little, but anyone else have relatives that were in France during ww2 and ate cats? Did this really happen?

I know they ate - and still eat - horses which must upset you a tad.

My grand folks told me that food got so scarce in France during the war, the French took to selling and consuming cat meat at their eateries.

Cat meat was called 'roof rabbit', apparently.
Re: Dunkirk
Went last night and thought the film was fantastic. As mentioned the musical score is very good at building the tension and the sound effects are terrifying, they really convey the power of the explosions and gun shots. The torpedo hit almost made me jump out of my seat.
If anyone is holding back and waiting to see it on kodi or dvd don't, it has to be seen at the cinema. Nice new big comfy seats at Burnley too.

Re: Dunkirk
I saw it before I came away on holiday to beat up the Chelsea supporting reps. I thought it was an excellent film - gripping and moving. Did anyone notice they didn't show a single 'German' face in the whole film? Presumably to anonymise the enemy and focus more powerfully on the retreating troops and their incredible will to survive. As has been said several times, it really is one for the big screen.

Haha. Rubbish. My brother worked on the CGI on this film. But he did tell me the director seems to be unaware of any CGI.

Yes, I went to see the FIlm Symphony Orchestra in Barcelona earlier this year and they performed a lot of tracks composed by Hans Zimmer. When on my honeymoon in NYC last month I saw he was due to play at the Radio City Music Hall. Unfortunately, the concert dates were the day after we were due to leave. He has composed so many brilliant soundtracks.

Well, what a fantastic film. The sound effects were excellent which make watching it in the cinema a must, in my opinion. The soundtrack really did keep going throughout, adding to the tension. Well worth a watch.
