Just my view. I feel long is coming of age and growing as a CB whereas shawcross is getting worse from what iv seen of him last season. Did you see him play last season?MDWat wrote:Is someone genuinely asking whether Shawcross is an upgrade on Kevin Long? Seriously?

I always thought the Tony Scholes at Stoke was the one from Preston but maybe given what is happening it is another one:-)

Can't argue with that.
Blackburn are the richest Indian owned club in League One. That's for sure.....

Re: Ryan Shawcross
Personally I would much rather have Dawson.
Two years younger, hasn't had a major back injury and scores goals. 8 in the last two seasons.
Already scored for WBA this pre-season and would increase our attacking threat in set pieces hugely. Get some Brady corners and FKs onto that lad.

Re: Ryan Shawcross
The back is the issue-as a player he has been immense and done a great job for Stoke
Whatever this guy would cost would be prepared to go an extra £5m for Dawson

Re: Ryan Shawcross
As much as I'd like this to happen I just can't see it. I have thought plenty of clubs would be in for him if he was available around the £10-15m mark, massive upgrade on what we have at the club.
Re: Ryan Shawcross
He's not the player he was and I'd be wary of shopping at Stoke again. I didn't think either Walters or Bardsley looked like they had much to offer Vs Celta Vigo. That's not to say we should write them off obviously, I just didn't think they looked like first teamers. Walters in particular looked leggy when he came on. Surely they'd only sell Shawcross if they thought he was past his best?

Re: Ryan Shawcross
Why does it have to be one or the other? Shawcross and Dawson will do nicely
Mee, Tarkowski, Shawcross and Dawson would be excellent competition. Long could be sold or loaned out to a Championship club for a full season of football.

No we definitely shouldn't be writing players off judged off a one half viewing in a pre season friendly!jlup1980 wrote:He's not the player he was and I'd be wary of shopping at Stoke again. Re: Ryan Shawcross
If his back is an issue that would show in a medical - as we've seen they are thorough.
We've already done business with Stoke this summer so the communication channels are open. Bardsley and Walters being here already might be a factor.
If we're interested, and assuming he's available, I'd say we are strong contenders to sign him. He's unlikely to go to a team better than Stoke. The other team, outside of the top 6/7, obviously shopping for a CB are West Brom but after the very public falling out between Pulis and Shawcross last season that seems an unlikely move.
Dawson, ticks all the boxes but the big drawback is dealing with Pulis/West Brom. Probable scenario potential deal drags on through the remainder of the window and then breaks down leaving us no time to move onto a decent alternative target.
We need a PL quality CB, ideally within the next week or so. A fit Shawcross is better than we would have reasonably expected as Keane's replacement.

Re: Ryan Shawcross
Reading the Stoke forum, quite a few mentioning that "He's not the player he was" after injury.
Re: Ryan Shawcross
Dyche has said he is happy with his centre backs and the option of playing Taylor there means meets his objective of having 2 players for every position.
He is not looking to buy a centre back but did say that if an opportunity came along for a player before the end of the transfer window and it was right for the club etc they would bring them in.

More than happy with differing opinions. Life would be dull without it. It's the arrogant and factual way that opinions by some are put across that ruins the board.KRBFC wrote:I'm here, foe the opinions you dont agree with sounds very strange.
For example I've no problem if someone says 'I think Shawcross is crap' but instead it's 'Shawcross is crap'.

One thing Shawcross certainly isn't is "crap".
He'd be perfect, but if he was available and we were the only suitors interested you'd have to wonder why.

Looks to me like we will not be signing an extra centre back.
Re: Ryan Shawcross
Tarkowski has been patient and deserves his chance
I'm sure Dyche has chatted him last year telling him that.
But I'd he fails to produce in first few games
I'm sure we will bring in a centre back before window closes
That's the way I see it

I read it as a message to whoever we're after, that we aren't desperate so if they think they can hold us over a barrel, they're wrong.

Re: Ryan Shawcross
All well and good if the lads gel and preform. The defence were brilliant last season, our stronger area on the pitch overall. Just how many times did the defence and keeper win us points? With a massive void to step into for Long, Taylor or Tark I think we really need not risk no signing of an experienced premiere league CB. You just don't get the time to experiment with your defence without suffering if it doesn't work.boatshed bill wrote:Yes. I've seen that quote.

A couple of sloppy preformances up front and you can walk away with draws or marginal defeats . The same happens at the back in this league and all of a sudden you have had two heavy defeats, with the confidence ripped out of the defence.
Im not saying a new face may gel better than what we have but there will be scrutiny on not signing an experienced replacement for Keane should the risk not pay off.
He hasn't let us down so far with his decisions and long may it continue.
Come on Clarets.
Well up for this season now.
The football drought is nearly over.

Id be inclined to agree . Dyche is learning the prem transfer game and playing along hopefully.Colburn_Claret wrote:It's all in the interpretation.

Re: Ryan Shawcross
Is there any foundation for this bar one fella on a Stoke forum?
Anyway - he's been a very good player for a long period. I hear the worry about his back, but the perceived decline in his form coincides with Hughes' attempt to play a more expansive brand of football which didn't protect the centre backs anywhere near as well as the rigid 442 Hughes inherited from Pulis.

Re: Ryan Shawcross
From the pre season I think we should be looking for a centerback not sure shawcross is the right one think we do need pace or someone who spots danger early. Tark hasn't impressed me up to now, he looks slow to get into position. Watching Mee and Keane last season they were on their toes all game and moving in sync back and forwards Tark seems to have a mind of his own also noticed Taylor at left back being slow to move up with the line. Hopefully these are just teething problems and the defence will gel but I am slightly worried for the Chelski game this weekend. If we allow as much pressure on our defence as there was last season I feel it may be a demolition job. Our midfield will need to work there a55e5 off for the full 90mins.
