These young players who never are quite ready, who never will be quite ready because we are a club frightened to give them a chance.

Nice "work" if you can get it, hopefully we won't see much of him, if at all. Now back to the real business of signing those two or three younger players for the first team, looking forward to seeing who they are.

So I take it you've seen every other Premier League sides 2nd choice keeper play then?Walton wrote:I haven't been impressed by Pope when I've seen him.
His kicking in particular was woeful last Tuesday, with one from his hands looping out before reaching half way, and two real shanks with his left foot which only made it about 30 yards.
A decent PL team would capitalise on that. They'd press him and force him to kick with his left, and mop up the miskicks. There aren't any other PL keepers that poor with their wrong foot, being able to welly it at least half way is a bare minimum requirement for anything above Sunday League, surely.

Re: Adam legzdins
I remember Liverpool coming to us at a time when Mignolet was under a lot of flak for his lack of composure on the ball, and had even been dropped. They started Jones, but he had to go off injured, and on came Mignolet. The crowd were straight onto him and Barnes and Ings chased every ball to him down. Loads went out of play, and his head had gone. He still hasn't shaken off those doubts about him.Walton wrote:A decent PL team would capitalise on that. You've got to be joking Skipton it's experience we need, back ups then more experience and then yes you've guessed it a little more experience. It's all that counts at this level.

Don't think I've seen Nordfeldt at Swansea play, Maenpaa at Brighton, Eduardo at Chelsea or Lossl at Huddersfield. Seen Coleman at Hudds play once, keeping a clean sheet in the playoffs.
Otherwise I've seen all other PL keepers play quite a few games, yeah.

Re: Adam legzdins
Quite a bit. If we had splashed out and bought an expensive keeper closer to the ability of Heaton we would be in a position to spend less on a winger, centre half or a support striker.ClaretTony wrote:What's that got to do with the potential signing of a goalkeeper as cover?
Seems like a good bit of business to me. Like others have said Pope moves up a spot, honouring any promises we might have made to him, we have third place cover, Mitchell can go out and get some game time and Legzdins has an outside chance at some premier league football and the opportunity to improve by learning from the best. Everyone wins, can't really see how anyone can grumble at that, but I'm not surpised that some have.

Not surprised by the signing (we needed a third choice who hopefully won't play and we have one) surprised it's a 3 year deal though.

my point being why is everyone moaning about Legzdins signing as 3rd choice when every PL team has a keeper of the same or worse standard as their 3rd choiceWalton wrote:Just looking through a list.

Strange signing, Robinson brought alot of knowledge and experience at the top, this guy brings experience of playing in League Two. We should've gone for Shay Given.

Possibly, I think Heaton became a better keeper when Robinson joined, I don't see this guy offering anything in terms of development to either keeper which for me makes it a strange signing.Leisure wrote:Maybe we did but he didn't fancy being 3rd choice keeper after a successful career!

Re: Adam legzdins
Amazing that some would rather our 3rd choice keeper be a 21 year old who's highest level in 1st team football is Conference North... rather than a 30 year old who has been playing in the championship for the past 3 seasons
Re: Adam legzdins
If a keeper gets the ball on his wrong foot and under pressure, then the ability to knock it sideways for a throw in will do. There are lots of attributes you want a goalkeeper to have, and ability with the ball at his feet that high up the list.Walton wrote:I haven't been impressed by Pope when I've seen him.

Re: Adam legzdins
Have we not a recruitment team who scout the Leagues?
The policy is buy experience, everything is about experience, not very exciting or dynamic experience, but bags of it, it is the way to the trap door.

Hendrick, Gray, Brady, Taylor, Pope. Everything isn't about experience, it's about balance but sadly your views are not balanced enough to be able to see that.ablueclaret wrote:Have we not a recruitment team who scout the Leagues?

More will be added before the end of August so how about stopping with the one line tedious analogies until then, at least.

Re: Adam legzdins
Nothing wrong with this signing. He played in both league games against Blackburn last season, only conceded 1 goal and Birmingham picked up 4 points, nothing wrong with that at all.
Poor lad being classed as old by ablue --he's younger than Tom Heaton.

Re: Adam legzdins
ABlueLiar will shortly suggest a young GK from the scottish football league who has been looked at by the top six in the PL. Someone who could have been a real talent had SD given them a chance, if not in the nets then even playing in front of the back four.
Unfortunately not many were interested in joining BFC due to an uncommitted manager who, based upon evidence, wanted to join Palace in the summer. Now we're stuck with 'geriatrics'.

I thought we were looking to sign Shay Given as 3rd choice? More like for like with Robinson and someone who could have proved a valuable asset with his knowledge and experience.

Maybe Given didn't fancy sitting on the bench (effectively retiring from playing) for the remainder of his career?

I'm struggling to see the sense in filling up 3 out of just 25 squad slots with 3 keepers. Ship one out, and have a promising youngster who doesn't need registering as third choice.

But the youngster would have to be under 21 to be eligible to play and there aren't many (if any) PL clubs who would have a keeper so young on their bench.Walton wrote:I'm struggling to see the sense in filling up 3 out of just 25 squad slots with 3 keepers. Re: Adam legzdins
We sign an older keeper who won't play, people complain.
If we signed a younger keeper who wouldn't play, people would complain.
We had Cisak with us for 2 yrs and he barely got a mention on here a lot of the time, because the complainers forgot about him.
The same will happen with this lad, people will have their complaints and then forget we've got him most of the time.

You must be very easily pleased. We've signed 1 player marginally better than what we've already got, 1 good prospect, 2 old reserves and an absolute disaster of a goalkeeper who's barely managed to muster a career in the lower leagues.ClaretTony wrote: Good window so far.
