Bob Lord " anti -Semitic blowhard"
Interesting article in DT about the banning of live footy on Saturdays between 2.45 and 5.15. Lord is quoted as saying " We have to stand up against a move to get soccer on the cheap by the Jews who run TV"

Re: Bob Lord " anti -Semitic blowhard"
He had a fraught relationship with Manny Cussins at Leeds United back in the day. It all stemmed from the time Lord took umbrage at Cussins turning down his offer of a Lord's Pork Pie whist at the Cricket at Headingley.

If it was not for Bob Lord BFC would not be in the strong position that we are in today. He laid the foundations of our success.

Selling players againgst their wishes was symptomatic of chairmen back in the day.Bob Lord was as good or bad as the rest
To describe him as our saviour is slightly distorting history. We had a great manager in Harry Potts and an excellent scouting and recruiting system The latter is still something that needs more development after its wrecking by John Bond and the incompetants that ran our club in Bonds disastrous time at Burnley

And after Bond's time.
Re: Bob Lord " anti -Semitic blowhard"
That comment does not mean that Bob Lord was particularly antisemitic. You had to be alive in the 60s to understand that. It was a common expression to call someone a Jew if they were tight fisted. Everybody used that expression from little kids to grown men It was commonplace. Nowadays it would be anti-semitic because it is no longer part of the vernacular.

Not my opinion. Just quoting from the DT article. That was the actual phrase used.Chobulous wrote:That comment does not mean that Bob Lord was particularly antisemitic. Mistrust of Jews is hardly a new thing, it was around in biblical times (they sold out JC) and still goes on today. It's all a bit strange if you ask me, Zionists, Masons et al. I've never had any of them controlling my life. Or have I?

Re: Bob Lord " anti -Semitic blowhard"
Lord said that at a dinner in Liverpool and upset a number of Jewish people there. That's what led to him banning his own directors from attending our 4-1 win against Leeds at Elland Road.
He came under attack from a lot of people for that remark for which, of course, he never apologised. I don't think though that it was ever meant to be anti-semitic, just that he knew that the top people in TV were Jewish and so threw it in for effect. But who knows what ever went through his mind.

Re: Bob Lord " anti -Semitic blowhard"
It wasn't until the mid 80's "Jew" someone wasn't a phrase used in everyday speak, as in "he's jewing you there".
It had nothing whatsoever to do with anti-Semitism, despite what liberal agitators and apologists would have you believe. The term is actually a reference to Merchant of Venice by Shaky. True the antagonist is Jewish, which by todays standard wasn't PC, but at the time was the equivalent to "an Irishman walked into a bar..." level of racism.
Judging terms of yesteryear as batons to beat people up with is nothing more than looking to sully someone's reputation by standards that did not exist at the time.... something most of us of a certain age could by found guilty off. I have used many "offensive" terms in the past.... at the time they were just part of the language that you didn't even think about at the time. "N____r in the wood pile" is another, the term refers to a large lice that devastate wood piles and has nothing to do with the abusive term of today.... not that you'd know that given the blind reaction it would receive today.
Both language and values change over time. Lincoln wanted to re-patriate the freed slaves to Cuba not have them stay in America, he is now seen as the great redeemer of the American people.... times change perception and distort reality.

As Semitic refers to a group of several Asian languages, including Arabic, how has anti-Semitic evolved into Jew-hating?

Growing up the term 'jewish' was used as a a term for being tight. Lord's era was different and political correctness was not important.Throughout history they have been known for being very shrewd business people. I have worked with many and it is a common theme. Often ruthless in business, often successful but often deal with themselves.

The root word Semite gives the false impression that antisemitism is directed against all Semitic people, e.g., including Arabs. The compound word antisemite was popularized in Germany in 1879[6] as a scientific-sounding term for Judenhass "Jew-hatred",[7][8][9][10][11] and that has been its common use since then.[12][13]

Re: Bob Lord " anti -Semitic blowhard"
The origin of "antisemitic" terminologies is found in the responses of Moritz Steinschneider to the views of Ernest Renan. As Alex Bein writes: "The compound anti-Semitism appears to have been used first by Steinschneider, who challenged Renan on account of his 'anti-Semitic prejudices' [i.e., his derogation of the "Semites" as a race]."[14] Avner Falk similarly writes: 'The German word antisemitisch was first used in 1860 by the Austrian Jewish scholar Moritz Steinschneider (1816–1907) in the phrase antisemitische Vorurteile (antisemitic prejudices). Steinschneider used this phrase to characterise the French philosopher Ernest Renan's false ideas about how "Semitic races" were inferior to "Aryan races"'.[15]

Re: Bob Lord " anti -Semitic blowhard"
Lord was great for Burnley for a number of years and up to a point. His failings were that he would let things get far too personal and would get rid of players because it suited HIM whether it was it was in the best interests of the club at the time or not AND he also clung on to dictatorial power far too long after people like him had been moved aside at many other top clubs in favour of those with a far more modern outlook on the financial aspects of the game and that did lead indirectly to our downfall and slide down the leagues. Strangely enough, when he was spouting off about not allowing TV cameras to film live matches he seemed to make most sense as it appeared perfectly logical that nobody would pay to go to a ground and watch a match when you could sit in your living room with a cup of tea and watch it and he believed that would see football founder. Bizarrely people (us!) still do pay to go to matches, even travelling the length and breadth of the country when all the action is on TV. So turns out he was wrong there, but I do believe he was well intentioned.

Re: Bob Lord " anti -Semitic blowhard"
Actually it isn't. This is one of the phrases that over the years has been bastardised into a different "accepted" meaning. I'll grant you it is widely accepted that slaves were the reference, however the latest research strongly suggests "N___r" was a term long before slavery and referred to a weavel/lice which in parts of the world is still known (with the modern revision) as a Jigger - a wood eating lice.... similar but much larger (and hungrier) than the wood louse, that is now extinct in Britain but survives in other parts of the world .TractorFace wrote:Large lice? It's about hiding runaway slaves.
Sorry I'm an anorak who loves the sources of words and phrases. I seem to remember the topic was even discussed on an addition of QI though its only a vague memory of it popping up on their so I cannot offer year/episode information.
Edit /addendum - Just popped into my head that runaway slaves hiding in woodpiles may even be a source of the term of abuse we now associate with racism, likening them originally to the dreaded lice (at a time when having something destroying your wood stocks could be life or death) of that name - last bits just a thought.
