How would english football be structured if SKY ever pulled the plug ?

Post by s6t9a2f3f » Fri Aug 11, 2017 12:38 pm

English football is currently ran and largely funded by Sky money so what would be the structure if that ceases to be the case ? would there be just a super self funded rich 1 or 2 European Leagues and litters of part time / non league leagues ?

There would be a fairly large collapse of both clubs and some of their owners other business' at a guess.

Some clubs would be ok for a short while, especially if their owners are billionaires, but it would be scary to see it all implode.

There would still be clubs, but players wages would be smashed back down to sensible levels in most cases and I suspect FFP would become instantly enforced and harshly.

There would be a great danger of let's say espn or al jazeera stepping in and moving the product around the world.

With the current level of transfer fees and wage demands then football is not sustainable for more than another 3 or 4 years at most. Only those clubs with billionaire playboys will be able to afford them so a European super league becomes inevitable. At that point Sky will leap in and pay absolutely insane amounts of money to show it however they will soon realise that financially this is also unsustainable as subscribers would desert it in droves. Only the fans of the super rich English teams would be bothered to pay out to watch and this wouldn't be enough to justify the fees for subscriptions.

The rest of us i.e the majority of fans will welcome the return of more sanity to football where transfer fees will fall as will wage demands for all except the most exceptional players who will be transferred to the super league teams. The teams who will suffer most will be those who have bought players on fantastic contracts and paid huge fees for as they will have financial problems even bigger than now. Teams like Burnley will be in a good position financially when compared to the other remaining teams. There will still be an uneven financial playing field between teams however the gap will have significantly closed and all the domestic leagues all across Europe will be far more competitive and interesting as a result. All the current main leagues across Europe are dominated by a small number of clubs in each so when these dominant super rich teams have left these leagues then football will be back with the fans and not super rich playboys who will be left with a model that doesn't work and not many people will care about. I can't wait for it to happen.

Google YouTube or Facebook would step in, there is so much money to be made from live streaming that it makes sense that this will be the future

IMO live streaming for free or a subscription will be the way forward.

Look at the music industry. Napster essentially set the ball rolling for spotify.

Look at the film industry. Illegal film streams paved the way before sensible subscription based alternatives, like Netflix, became available.

NowTV and Kodi are offering specific games either free, or at a more sensible price. Sky Sports is ridiculously expensive and their recent restructuring of payments shows that they are worried and having to adapt. Technology will make live football cheaper to watch eventually

Think this would be the case. There's a seemingly unquenchable demand for EPL footie in
places like the Far East and Asia in general. Chinese demand in particular is said to be increasing
greatly every year and the US more and more.

However, no reason at all for Sky to pull out in any case.
Geese and golden eggs, etc.
