He has potential but hasn't got going for Palace at all. Cork has deserved it more because he's consistent, composed and can pick a pass. Perfect for a defensive mid and that is what England need at the minute - a rock in midfield.FactualFrank wrote:I was thinking the same. Abraham I think will be interesting to see more of as he's shown he knows where the goal is. Every time I've seen Loftus-Cheek he's looked extremely 'meh'.

Hypocritical when you see at least four or five of the other names in that squad.ClaretTony wrote:On the subject of Wilshere, Southgate said: ""I don’t know how you get in an England squad if you’re not in the Arsenal team.”
Southgate depresses me.

Re: England Squad Announcement
Its not ideal at all, but at least he's trying to bring players through from ones he knows in the U21 squad.
I know its very long term thinking, but when you think of the success that the U20s and U17s have had, then its not the worst policy in the world.

All you need to know is that he's part of Liverpool's defence. That alone should keep him away from the England squad.Bin Ont Turf wrote:I'd like to know as well.

I know he plays for Liverpool, but don't recollect actually hearing his name during a game. So not sure how many times he's featured.

At least Southgate has made one decision which I agree with - he's choppped Ox-Chamberlain from the squad. That gets a thumbs up from me.

We'd all be raving about him if he had a Spanish surname.claretrobo1 wrote:All you need to know is that he's part of Liverpool's defence. That alone should keep him away from the England squad.
Oh hang on....
Re: England Squad Announcement
That's what I mean, doesn't point us in a certain direction that we are heading. 8 of those players shouldn't and won't be near the squad come next summer.FactualFrank wrote:Probably a bit of all that, MACCA. I'd be worried if that was close to our World Cup squad though, which I envisage it will be.
In my opinion we should be either picking and preparing the youth with an eye on the next 3 or 4 tournaments, or picking a squad for now hoping to give us the best chance of winning for the short term, with a tried and tested system.
We seem stuck in between 2 or 3 approaches.
No wonder the players don't know what's going on, no clear structure in place and no clear plan for moving forward.

Ashley young? ... Ashley f*****g young?!
Have we really reverted back to the cheating so and so who has never ever been good enough?
Won't change until yes men stop getting the job. Strong character needed

Re: England Squad Announcement
Who were people expecting Gareth to pick?
Re: England Squad Announcement
Has he called Delph and Young up as left backs, because that's where they're currently playing for City and Utd. Lingard is laughable. Maguire hasn't been anywhere near as good as Tarky, Mee or Lascelles so far this season. Gomez? That's crackers. He's part of a dreadful Liverpool defence. Cahill has been very poor this year as well. There are so many reasons why this squad highlights Southgate's short comings. Uninspiring to say the least.
Re: England Squad Announcement
If picked on form*, I'd go:
Butland
Gomez Stones Jones
Trippier Winks Dier Young
Alli
Kane Rashford
*from that squad.
Otherwise Tarks and Cork for Jones and Dier.
(Marney needs to be at least 70% fit to get in, and I'm not sure he is yet)

Re: England Squad Announcement
I looked at the defence and the best two in there are both right backs. Jones, Cahill and Stones makes me think: We'll have to score 2-3 goals just to get a point, against the better sides.

I know it’s half-term but is it “bring your kids to work day” at the FA, and they’ve let them pick the squad and do the press release?

Dunk, Shelvey, Tarkowski all deserved a place based on form yet non of them were called up, complete biased favourable bullsh*t which is why the system has failed for years.

You are correct about Shelvey. Best English passer, by some distance. He'd be in my squad

Joe Gomez has played for Liverpool 13 times in the league. 13! Ever!
In fact he's only played 45 games in total at senior level - i.e. not even a full season. Ridiculous.

Re: England Squad Announcement
Just for balance,
1. I think Cork is similar in style and just as good as Henderson at club level but no better. Cork hasn't been in the England system since he was a kid. Henderson has more experience at international and european competition level.
2. The kids are just there for experience around the England camp. Don't think they will make the bench even for these two friendlies.
3. Same as always for England - there is a lot of talent among those senior players- Alli, Kane, Stones, Rashford, Walker, Sterling for starters. Rose, Bertrand, Vardy, Dier, Cahill, Winks and our keepers aren't bad either. Just need to find a find a way to get it to work. I don't think Cork or Tarkowski for that matter would improve our chances of winning anything.
Tin hat time....

Re: England Squad Announcement
Some of the ones who get selected and are virtual "shoe ins" are ridiculous when you look at their form and their contribution to England in previous games, BUT tbh I'm more than happy for Burnley players to be left out as it may result in injuries and we just don't need it!

Re: England Squad Announcement
Looking at the squad of names, particularly in midfield, you realise more than ever, that we are a long way away from the days of the dilemma of picking Gerrard, Lampard, Hargreaves, Scholes or Carrick in midfield.
