Burnley playing in Europe
Ok, we’ve still got a long long way to go but should we finish in the top 6, what would Burnley FC playing in Europe mean to you?
Would we be better to finish 7th and remain focus on the league?

Re: Burnley playing in Europe
I'm not sure I saw all of our Inter Cities Fairs Cup games and the 3 knockout European competitions all meant something to every English football fan then but it's a bit dragged out and distracting these days, I'd still go though.

Re: Burnley playing in Europe
It really would be another dream come true. As someone who started watching in the mid--late 80's I never thought we would ever make it to rhe top league so I would love us to do it. As you say though, long, long way to go.

Unlikely but you never know - those Fairs Cup nights were amazing. If we can get into a position to create anything like those then, yes, we go for it.

Saw us against Lausanne at the back end of 1966 as a kid.
5-0, great atmosphere, from what I can remember.
Doubtless it would be exciting again.
But let's just focus on staying up at the top end of the PL.
Great times.

Doesn’t 7th place get into the Europa League if one of the top 6 wins the League Cup/FA Cup?

As Moffit says, we’re not going to break into the top 6 but absolutely no reason why we can’t finish 7th. If an english team wins the Champions League does the 7th Places team qualify for the Europa League?

What happens if Man City win this years champions league, would they qualify automatically for next year therefore there would be another place open and the Europa League qualifying place drop down another place (if you know what I mean)?

Possibly. It is all very complicated. We will know better if it gets to April and we are in contention for top 7. Fingers crossed

Re: Burnley playing in Europe
Leicester were on 25 points after 12 games when they won the league. So we might not be champions at the end of this season, but we could be looking at a very strong top half finish.
If we can avoid falling away it'd be really nice to beat the 63 points Rovers got 12 years ago when they finished 6th.
We might not exactly do a Leicester, but we can try and do an Ipswich.

It would be on a par with winning the FA Cup to me. To see Burnley abroad in some European stadiums would be incredible. I might have to book 9 months off work.

) were to win the Europa League they would become a 5th entrant to Champions League if they finish outside top 4. Then 6th would enter the Europa instead of 5th, If FA cup is won by a team already qualified for Europe the Cup runners up get a place, if runners up are qualify thru league position then 7th place get Europa, the maximum we can have is 5 in CL and 2 in Europa or 4 in CL and 3 in Europa so top 7 maximum.
I thought I heard the cup runners up route had been scrapped by uefa..?

Re: Burnley playing in Europe
7th would get us into the Europa League as long as both cups were won by teams already in the top 6. Can't believe the amount of miserable buggers on here saying we don't want to be in Europe or let's just finish 17th. Would love some European away trips or the chance to see the likes of AC Milan on the Turf!

Re: Burnley playing in Europe
Just thinking of Panzanato stamping big Andy's head into the Turf Moor mud in 67 still makes me seethe. A fantastic European night clouting Napoli was that.
I am just thinking about getting nearer to that 40-pt mark though. That is the objective for me again.

Re: Burnley playing in Europe
If the height of your ambition is for us to avoid relegation this season then you’re setting the bar really low. This season presents a fantastic chance for us to have our best season in decades. 7th is still a big ask but I’d be disappointed if we couldn’t secure a top half finish. We’ve already got a 9 point gap to 11th position.
I’ve said for a while that there’s very little between the bottom 13/14 sides in this division. Fortunately for us we are the most organised and we have the best manager. Take a look down the league table and tell me which teams really concern you.

a) If the FA Cup winners finish in the top five of the Premier League, their UEL group stage place will go to the next-highest ranked team not qualified for UEFA competitions in the Premier League.
b) If the EFL Cup winners finish in the top five of the Premier League (or top six if (a) happens), their UEL third qualifying round place will go to the next-highest ranked team not qualified for UEFA competitions in the Premier League.
Re: Burnley playing in Europe
I've never dreamt of winning the Premier League, it seems too farfetched, but lately I've been fantasising about qualifying for the Europa, winning that and then winning the Champions League. Its a reyt good thought to go to sleep to.

Re: Burnley playing in Europe
So we are also rooting for arsenal (or another) to win the Europa/ UEFA cup and finish outside the top 4.
We are probably getting way ahead of ourselves. 22 points in the conference is only just outside relegation spots so a bad run of games without a win would easily see Watford and others catch us.

Re: Burnley playing in Europe
Other than the small matter that the conference sides have played 8 more games than us, and 22 points would still leave a team 5 points above the relegation zone and the conference division (National League) has absolutely no relevance to our situation this is a good point.timshorts wrote:So we are also rooting for arsenal (or another) to win the Europa/ UEFA cup and finish outside the top 4.

Re: Burnley playing in Europe
In the unlikely event of this occurring,I've just checked on the rewards etc available to teams competing in the Europa League....
https://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleague/n ... 93323.html
Even if you win the damn thing, you get around £16m, you play on Thursday nights, meaning Sunday fixtures in the Premier League at least until December... we have a small squad, so why risk our probable Premier League future ? If we can lose at home to Conference Lincoln in the FA Cup, then we can certainly F**k it up away to a Slovakian/Georgian/Maltese team in early August...
We'll just tell them that we're still offended by them banning us from the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1962, because we weren't a City and we didn't have an International Trade Fair, demand a one-off historical damages payment of £30m, and let some other Club, Watford perhaps, make a horlicks of the whole thing !!
