Help solve an argument.

Post by 2 Bee Holed » Mon Dec 11, 2017 2:33 pm

Please help to end an argument.

Of the current 92, which club has played at their current ground the longest?
And whereabouts are Burnley on that list?

I thought I knew the answer, but after a dispute on Saturday with a Swindon fan, I am not too sure.

Preston is the only one that has been in constant use more than ours isn't it?

20th century when Chelsea moved in, Preston have been at Deepdale since the late 1870s.

The answer to the question of which team has played at its ground the longest is definitely Preston at Deepdale

I thought so Tony, but are we 2nd or 3rd?

I have discovered today trying to find out this answer, that of the 49? clubs who have ever played in the Premier League,
we are the top of that list. Do we agree on that?

I was always under the impression that we were second behind Preston

We would be, because Preston have never played in the Premier League

The Swindon fan, my brother-in-law, was arguing that it was Mansfield Town and Field Mill.
So, I backed down a bit, and started to doubt myself.
On googling today, I discover that Field Mill is indeed old, but Mansfield Town were not even formed until 1897.
So he was probably arguing about the oldest ground out of the 92.

By the way, I had forgotten about clubs in the lower divisions telling fibs about the state of their pitches.
He had travelled from Swindon following on from Stanley's 9am tweet, only to discover it was off.
He was not a happy bunny.

Ring him up and tell him that it's not just his time he's wasted this weekend, and that he's wrong.

I think you may be getting confused with your facts - Sheffield AFC is the oldest club in the world.

CORRECTION according to the Football League ground guide you are right with Brammall Lane 1862.... the oldest ground currently in use for LEAGUE football.

I have a feeling your brother-in-law may be confusing Field Mill with The Drill Field where, I think, Northwich Victoria used to play. I seem to recall that this ground had a very long history as Northwich's ground.

But that wasn't the original question. Sheffield United were formed to play at Bramall Lane in 1889.

I think Bramhall Lane is the only league ground to have staged a Test Match, been on when it was a cricket field the ball boys used to waste time if the Blades were winning late on in the game saw Gary France have a great game in a league cup game, we got beaten though.

I think I am right in saying that Bramhall Lane is the only ground to host a Test Match, an International football match, and an FA Cup Final (relay). It was a quiz question a while back in a quiz I attended.

Although non-league, Maidenhead Utd claim to have played at their current ground longer than any other football club. No idea if this is accurate.

This link refers to a slightly different question...

It quotes our friends from Deadwood as having played at Ewood since 1882, but they actually only played a handful of games there that year, before moving to Leamington Road, where they played until 1890, when they played their first game as permanent residents at Ewood Park. Prior to 1890, " Ewood Bridge " had been an all-purpose Sports facility, hosting athletics and dog racing amongst other things....

Here's another one. If Football League rules had stayed consistent - only one team per town/city - hence the folding of Blackburn Olympic. Which teams would have been the most successful?- Spurs would never have existed as an example nor Liverpool, or at least would have not been in the football league unless they'd replaced Arsenal and Everton.

Much like my brother-in-law, some people are going off at a tangent and not concentrating on the question.

I think we are all agreed now, that the knowledge I was given on this subject in childhood is correct, i.e. Preston and then us.

Yes, I came across the Maidstone United info too. Cheeky beggars have even unveiled an official plaque from the F.A.
Do, I not recall going to play Maidstone Utd. v Burnley in Dartford?
That is hardly continuously playing at your stadium is it?

Then there is the question, 'Oldest purpose built football ground in the uk/world?' and it appears Goodison Park is the answer. (1892)
Surely, Turf Moor was purpose built? Or did it have to be all-4 sides developed at the same time?

Questions, questions, questions. :D

Think you maybe confusing Maidstone with Maidenhead and yes Maidstone did play in Dartford, wish I had known that before arriving in Maidstone an hour before kick off and asking the locals where the ground is.

You are correct TottonClaret, I was confusing them.
Aren't they the same place?

In my defence though, at least I went to Dartford!
