Jack Cork - the new Dobson ?

Post by RalphCoatesComb » Thu Dec 14, 2017 2:23 pm

Seeing Dobo at the match the other night caused me to liken Jack with him.

The time that they both always seem to have on the ball, the calmness with which they play, the ability always to find a pass and the ability not to get riled when fouled. (Obviously change to the past tense when reading that for Dobo).

I see what you mean Ralph, but Defour reminds me more of Dobson.
Like a Rolls Royce coming forward with the ball.

What a fantastic signing Jack has been, I also like seeing him with the Captains armband. I am now going to spend time working out if Cork or Defour is the closest to my happy memories of Dobo.

I think Jack Cork is an excellent player, but for me not in the same league as Dobbo. He was the one of the classiest players on the ball that I have ever seen, the way he could seemingly glide past 2 or 3 men almost in slow motion was a joy to behold. Plus he could shoot, head, defend and pass. What a player! :-)

It has to be DOBO not Dobbo. The song used to go: "'D O'; 'D O B'; 'D O B O', Dobo"

Defour played a thru ball to ???? against stoke, and although it ultimately came to nothing, it was one of the best passes I’ve ever seen live. Only he saw it. Iniesta wouldn’t have seen it. Neither would Pirlo. Only Steven Defour could’ve seen it. It was beautiful.

Sorry to hihack. Yeah corky is majestic how he struts around quietly doing his business.

The last 'Turf More' episode was Darren Bentley chatting to both Jack and Dobo.
All about England caps etc. Well worth a watch.
Interestingly, DB didn't compare them either.
However, there is a comparison, they are both midfielders who won their first full
England caps playing for Burnley. :D

Abnsolutely, Bobinho, he usually does 3 or 4 of them every game.
I am struggling to think of anyone else in a Burnley shirt for the past 50-years who can see those passes.
However, I suppose we are hijacking a thread about Jack.
JC, is a superb midfielder too!

For my money, Dobbo was the best in the country at what he did for a couple of seasons.

Corky's a good lad but he's not in that league.

Martin Dobson was class. It's great that we have Jack Cork and Steven Defour and we can make comparisons.

I played in a school football match (away team) in Clitheroe 71/72. Martin Dobson was on the touch line (can't remember whether he was walking a dog - or had come to watch the game). So, not only had I enjoyed watching Martin Dobson play for Burnley - and England - but Martin Dobson had.... well, been on the touch line while I was trying to play. (I very much doubt he would say he enjoyed watching me).

They both need to add more goals, heading ability and ball carrying to get near to Dobo.
Steven sees a pass and delivers it better.
Jack controls the pace of the game better but Dobo was truly special.
Started for us as a CF, went back to his best position in MF and came back to be a CH.
The complete footballer.

Dobbo was released as a youngster on Bolton's ( I think,) books. His rise to England player is an encouragement to other young players who may be rejected at one club that they could be become a success at another.

Whilst primarily a first class midfielder, Dobbo never looked out of place as a First Division centre half or striker when called upon. I don't believe we will see anyone else with that level of adaptability ever again.

I like the comparison of Jack Cork to Dobbo. He (Jack Cork) also has a knack of getting in late into the penalty box for a header just like Dobbo.

It is certainly complementing JC to compare him to Martin Dobson. A truly great player.

I played against Martin Dobson in about 1965 when he was Clitheroe GS's Centre Forward. I was playing for Accrington GS and we beat them 4-1. The best player on the pitch was'nt Dobbo. It was Geoff Henshall from Padiham and I've no idea what happened to him but MD was class even then. Sorry to stray from the original thread topic.

I watched him playing for CRGS against Burnley Grammar School at cricket. I'd been playing for a younger team and we'd already been beaten. He scored a classy half century too. At the time I obviously didn't have a clue who he was. It's one or two years ago though, Dobbo's 70 in a couple of months.

Dobson was a class above but always prone to the odd hallucination in defence when his belief in his skills didn't quite match the reality, always worth watching though.
Cork a slightly less gifted player but technically very proficient and much less likely to commit Hari Kari, dependable, not always what you got with MD.

He initially come as a striker.
Played a few games for us in that position before being converted to a Central Midfielder.

Likening any footballer with any other footballer just doesn't work (Pele/Maradona or C Ronaldo/Messi for example) Dobbo and Jack have one thing in common - they are both Burnley heroes who play/played a similar role.

I think Geoff went on to play for Spenwell (an amalgam of Spencer and Cardwell St in Padiham), along with (I think) Derek Bulcock, and Vincent
Charnley, amongst others if I'm not mistaken!

I've said it before and I'm always happy to repeat it.

Dobbo was a fantastic player for us. If only he'd had pace I wonder just how good he would have been. He could play at the back or in midfield, where he was so cultured, and even up front although that's where Bolton, I think, got him all wrong.

But Dobbo the person. I knew him well enough to speak to previously but from 2008 through to 2011, three years when he was in charge of the youth department, I cannot speak highly enough of him. No one, either before or since, at Burnley FC has been more respectful to myself and the website than Dobbo. It was an absolute privilege to deal with him, it really was. I was so, so disappointed when he left.

I was gutted when we didnt sign him first time round. Bit absolutely delighted when we did second / third.

In a weird way hes not changed that much and is no different to when we first had him. But in a good way. Classy on the ball and very calm. Reminds me of lampard but with less goals.

Thanks for that. Geoff, Derek and I were in the same year at AGS and Geoff was a quality player for the school team. There was a lad called Alan Hoole from Padiham also played. Dobbo was an out and out CF in those days, even when having a kickabout on Rishton rec.

It was a CF we signed from Bolton too. But we moved him into a midfield role very quickly. He played CF in his early appearances for us in 1967/68 but Easter 1968 brought the change. He wore the number 9 shirt in a 1-1 home draw against Leicester on Easter Monday and the following day wore the number 4 shirt at Leicester in a 2-0 win, and he scored the second.

I loved Dobos turn.
Ball on the outside of his right foot, suckering the opposition in, and then slowly turning 360°clockwise as they followed him around. As soon as he was facing the goal they were toast.
Wonderful to see.

But the talent pool is a bit bigger. The Premier League isn't just the best players in the UK now, its the best in the world. 40 years ago, Jack Cork would have had a decent should at making into a team capable of winning the league. Was Dobson not in a similar bracket (I never saw him)?

I like the way Cork has developed this season - you can see Dyche's influence, and the way he's bedded into the team. Over the last month or so we've seen loads more of Cork striding forwards in possession, playing more of a box to box role. He came to us as a specialist holding player but he's really begun to spread his wings recently. Long may it continue.

Sorry to hihack. Yeah corky is majestic how he struts around quietly doing his business.
Even I didn't see it Rob!

Hadn't he been released by Bolton before coming to Burnley?

Cork a slightly less gifted player but technically very proficient and much less likely to commit Hari Kari, dependable, not always what you got with MD.
If ever confirmation was needed that you've never seen Burnley play.
Hari Kari indeed.

I did see Dobbo lose the ball once (Just inside our half inside the centre circle). It was so unusual that it has never left me. A true legend in Claret & Blue.

This thread was not created to be disrespectful to him but to highlight the amazing work done by Jack Cork since he came back. WTF were they thinking at Swansea to let him go?!

Don't doubt there are similarities between Corky and Dobbo. JC has certainly surprised me and made me eat my words. He forms a pivotal axis with Defour and I hope he gets his just deserts by going to Russia next summer. That said Martin Dobson was another level and a Claret all time great. Something for Jack to aspire to.
