There will be a minute's silence ahead of today's game to allow us to remember those involved with Burnley FC who passed away in 2017, fans, former staff and players. The names are also printed in today's match programme and will be shown on the big screen at the time of the minute's silence. On behalf of Burnley FC Supporters Groups, I'd like to send my thoughts to the families and friends of all those named below.

It was on the radio yesterday that black armbands and a minutes tribute was to be had
for Cyril Regis at all grounds today.

If correct, how will that fit in ?

No idea how that can be fit in but we are having a minute’s silence ahead of the game today for those on the list above.

Thank you Tony. My dad is on the list, died just before Christmas, very unwell and expected. Usually myself and daughter but today taking Mum as well

One very good friend of mine on that list at 50, others I knew, and another couple that I knew but had no idea had passed away.

Someone posts this every year. This is the 6th we’ve had and there have been no concerns at all. We’ve also been the away fans when other clubs have done similar with no concerns.

So many of them and they do tend to get inebriated and sing a lot. All it takes is a few to spoil the silence as per boro a few years ago. Most teams i wouldnt have an issue with.

With all due respect to Cyrille Regis, he had no connection to our club, whilst the 100 or so Clarets who have passed away obviously did. It was an embarrassing mess and showed poor organisation I'm sorry to say.

That's why.

The Manchester United fans didn't seemingly know what was going on but the club announced Regis before it started and the Premier League had confirmed there would be a minute's applause before all games this weekend. If anyone ruined it, it was the Premier League I suppose.

Disappointing really, Burnley fans then joining in with the applause too when it should have been a silence. But certainly not pointing any fingers at the visiting fans today for that.

Burnley fans were right to clap as ot drowned out the moronic united fans.

Also doesnt help that one weeks its a clap next week its silence week after its a couple of claps at different stages of the game.

It was a mess but not sure how it could have been avoided. All fans knew about the minute's applause for Regis and that's what spoiled it. It was a real shame because those names on the big screen meant a lot to us all, and I know you and I Pimlico would have been looking at one name in particular. We'll certainly be speaking to the club about it, and we'll be making our voices heard with the Premier League too because it was certainly spoiled.

I was watching the game on BEin 11 and pre match, when the players all lined up in a circle, they cut to Everton's ground and a big picture of Cyrille Regis, then continued to go over other grounds with banners etc paying tribute to him. Then when the minute was over they just spoke about Cyrille for a short time, without mentioning what we were having a minutes silence for. Was quite bizarre.

The only United fans I heard shouting were the ones on the concourse. The announcer mentioned Regis and his contribution to the game and the United fans started clapping...then they all started. Interesting that I interpret very differently. I stand to be corrected. For me though, it was just a bit if a shambles all round.

It was explained over the tannoy that it was a silence for both the loved ones and for Cyrille. It was too much to expect the Man Utd fans to even listen to this let alone carefully. A shame, but well done for the VAST majority of Burnley fans who remained silent. I am also aware of one Coventry fan sat near us who after a while joined in with the clapping and I could understand why.

If they thought it was applause,surely when they saw the teams and Majority of the Burnley fans were in Silence they should have stopping singing and clapping.

I expected the minute's respect to be ruined and it was. Didn't for one moment expect Manchester United fans to acknowledge anything on behalf of Burnley so they turned it into another 'look at us' exercise. A bit like their manager.

A lot of us in the JHL simply stood in silence for the minute, one or two that did clap then stopped. It could have been explained (spelt out) to everyone in the ground by the P. A. chap exactly what was going to happen, even to the point that we are combining the Regis tribute by standing in silence rather than clapping. We do sometimes lack a bit of professionalism combined with forward thinking.

What a shambles that was, I think as a mark of respect we should try it again at our next home match so we can pay our respects to fellow Clarets... that certainly wasn't a way to remember them.

Poorly observed by United fans. They made it about themselves. Nothing to get upset about but it’s not difficult to remain silent for a minute when asked.

But all the National press said it was a minutes applause, Carnt blame them that much, our announcer isn't the best, apparently season tickets are now on sale according to him......

I was another to think the United fans were very crass and didn’t seem to give a toss. The announcer made it clear it was a minute’s silence and it was very obvious it was a memorial to a lot of our loved ones. The trouble is, when some fans start, everyone else feels uncomfortable so others join in. A bit of a mess and one that was hard for the club to anticipate.

I'm in the CFS, and to be honest you cannot hear a thing on the tannoy.

It had been nationally announced that there was to be a minute's applause, and that's what the Utd fans did.

No blame there.

As it is, a minute's applause is just as good as a minute's silence, so I don't really get the fuss. The same intention is there, and they're both widely accepted in the football world as a mark of respect.

We decided that this would always be a minute's silence and not applause. It was what the supporters clubs wanted when they approached the club with it and it is what was agreed with Lee Hoos who was then the chief exec. He was very much in favour of us doing this annually.

I do think the confusion has come about because of the press re: Cyrille Regis and I don't think the Manchester United fans actually did anything wrong, although I appreciate some won't agree with that.

In future years though, we need to ensure it is done correctly.

Some United fans were singing their songs (probably under the influence) so other United fans who were embarrassed as they wouldn't shut up started clapping to mask it. Then sang one Cyril Regis to turn it round completely.

Good and bad on their part.

I know this won’t be popular, but I’d drop the entire thing.

Silence and applause at TM should (hopefully) be a rare event and reserved for club legends.

Including the x minute applauses we have for fans these days, we probably spend 45 minutes a season paying our respects.

Too much.

My tone is probably going to make this post a hundred times more unpopular than yours, but I think we've been over-indulging grief these last few years. I'm not sure how a minute's applause from complete strangers before a game helps bereavement in a productive way. It seems to me to be token at best.

I agree to a point, it was unfortunate this time that the minutes applause thing was forced upon us on this particular week.

I quite like the idea of remembering all passed Clarets all at once.

The silence in November and this one should be the only ones, apart from as you've said for any Claret legends.

Minutes silence / applause... storm in a tea cup. From where I was, I heard a silence then a ripple of applause and then done chanting in memory of Cyril, then back to clapping. No harm really. There’re was nothing abusive, nothing malicious, respect was shown in different ways.

But what should’ve happened?

Maybe what they should’ve done is

A) postpone the in memorim and upset the fans
B) postpone Cyril Regis applause and get bollocked by the Premier League
C) have a minutes silence then have a minutes applause
D) instruct a minutes applause but go against the point of the in memorium as without consulting the fans
E) don’t bother at all next time because all you get is grief from keyboard warriors.

I stand by my comments above, but just want to point out that seeing two 12 year-old's, a 15 year-old, and a 21 year-old in that list absolutely breaks my heart. I'm just not sure if a stadium at capacity, half of which is drunk, is a good place to hold a minute's silence in their memory.

One of the benefits of this ag is that it should reduce the number of occasions we have silence or applause. I think most people know I don't like the ones during the game, and when we had three on one game a couple of seasons ago it was ridiculous.

But this is once a year and it is really well received as you can see from the number of names at the top of this thread. I had one very good friend's name on that list today. Yes, I paid my respects at the funeral in October and also went out with others before the Spurs game to have a drink in her memory, but today was my opportunity to pay my respects at the very place that brought us together in the first place.

I like this idea, I know I will say that because it was me who put it to the club in the first place, but this once a year plus that for club legends such as the one we observed for Peter Noble last May works well I think.

With no disrespect to Cyrille Regis, he had nothing whatsoever to do with our club and I thought it was totally wrong that the Premier League told us we had to do something for him today. This was our day, our chance to pay our respects to our own. It's worked absolutely perfectly in previous years.
