Re: Jimmy Armfield
I went to the Grand National at Aintree some years ago. I happened to get an invitation to the BBC Box, it was a cracking sporting occasion. There were lots of celebrities in there and when we all sat down for lunch I was sat down with Jimmy Armfield and his wife. What lovely people they were; they made me very welcome. JA talked about his football career and if I remember correctly he had some regrets about missing out on a World Cup 1966 place...he had been right back in the national side but got injured pre-tournament, and as a result lost his spot to George Cohen. An excellent football man.
RIP.

Re: Jimmy Armfield
just got my programme out for the Clarets home game against Man Utd (30th August 2014)
Jimmy Armfield was doing the radio coverage that day and signed the front of my programme!
so glad I got to meet and shake his hand
captain of England and true humble gentlemen - the likes we're unlikely to see again

Jimmy was a staunch Methodist, church/chapel organist and in his early days refused to play on Good Fridays.

I think that would be very likely (I would say Armfield was the top right back in the country at the time).hampsteadclaret wrote:I went to the Grand National at Aintree some years ago. Re: Jimmy Armfield
I concur with the views above- a very good player and a commentator worth listening to because he was very knowledgeable and didnt try and promote his own "personality".
I watched footy from 1957 and saw him play a few times in a tangerine shirt. My Clarets favourite was John Angus & I think Jimmy kept our right back from getting a few more England caps. I think Angus played left back on the occasion he played for England with Armfield keeping the No. 2 shirt.
Jimmy Armfield even made a decent job of managing Leeds United.
R.I.P.

A gentleman and a gentle man.
I live over on the Fylde Coast and people love him over here, a one club man, a club legend and highly respected in the wider community for his Charity work.
Sad news indeed.

Re: Jimmy Armfield
Very sad indeed to hear this news. A genuine Lancashire football man of quiet dignity which always came across when listening to him on radio 5. A shame that his beloved Blackpool should have been in such a calamitous state in his final years.

Re: Jimmy Armfield
Just heard a short tribute from Gary Bowyer.
Yes the word legend is overused but it is entirely appropriate to describe Jimmy Armfield. I hadn't realised he was as old as 82, what a career, the Seasiders appearance record with 627 games. Always thought his punditry conveyed something of a simple wisdom, almost Benaud-like. RIP Jimmy.

Re: Jimmy Armfield
The following is a tribute from Sir Bobby Charlton:
'...I am deeply saddened by the death of Jimmy Armfield.
As an opponent, team-mate and friend he was, without doubt, one of the most honest and genuine gentlemen I had the good fortune to meet.
I first got to know Jimmy during out respective national service, when we played in the same army sides. Little did I know then our paths would cross so often and it is still a privilege to think I played for Manchester United in Jimmy’s final match for Blackpool in 1971.
As one of the first overlapping full-backs he was always a dangerous opponenet. Little wonder he was regarded as the best right-back in Europe in the early 1960s.
I was fortunate to play alongside him at the 1962 World Cup and although he didn’t play in 1966, he was never less than a positive influence on the squad as we went on to become world champions for the first – and only time.
However, I knew the man as well as the player and it was not by chance that we stayed in touch for so long after we had both retired.
I have missed listening to his authoritative radio commentaries and now I will miss seeing Mr Blackpool around the scene.
Lady Norma and I send our condolences to Jimmy’s wife Anne, sons Duncan and John and the rest of their family...'

R.I.P Jimmy Armfield
Saw him play a couple of times late 60s.
I wasn't really old enough to appreciate how good he had been.
Recall my dad pointing him out.
Liked his radio commentary and insights.
Never met him, like a lot of Clarets on this thread, but not surprised how well thought of he was.
Always came across as a gentleman, as much as he is a football legend.

Doing the rounds on twitter at the moment.
Caretaker England boss Howard Wilkinson at a 1999 press conference, angry at suggestioins he lacked international experience:
"How many England caps have you lot got betweeen you?"
Voice from the back of the room: "43."
