Only Southampton..

Post by piston broke » Sun Mar 18, 2018 7:07 pm

Can deny 7th place an EL spot.
Leicester have the easiest run-in, on paper, but they are all fighting for survival and they also have to come t't'Turf.

Saints get Chelsea in semis.

Odds on seventh will get a Europa League place now. The only other thing that can stop that happening other than a Soton cup win is the unlikely scenario of an Arsenal collapse in the Premier League meaning they finish outside the top seven, but still manage to win the Europa Cup.

Really can’t understanding why people think Leicester’s run in is any easier than ours.

It's because we don't do arrogance.

And, crucially, we don't have to play Burnley away :D

Totally agree.
If I were a Leicester fan I would be thinking that all their away matches are really tough.
Brighton hardly ever lose at home; in fact their only home defeat in 2018 was to Chelsea and they've won their last 4 home games,
Palace away is always tough but will be especially tough as they seek to secure their status, Spurs are very good side, and no one looks forward to coming to the Turf.
Their home games all look winnable.

Europe would be a feather in our cap, but I'm not so sure I want it. We don't have the biggest squad and we have seen how we have performed with key players missing through injury.

It could be a double edged sword.

Totally agree. A few posters are getting obsessed with finishing seventh, my wife included. However we have to look at the bigger picture and that's surely to consolidate our standing in the PL. As SD say's were not the finished article.

I'm certain I want Europe as do many others I know. I couldn't tell you when we last finished 7th in the old 1st Division. I can tell you when we last played in Europe.

Leicester fans think it would be “abject humiliation” to finish below Burnley. It’s that arrogance which cause our fans to take a dislike to them in 2013/14 on ****.

They got a bit lucky and stayed up when they were destined for the Championship. Momentum and confidence carried them through a lot of the following season when the entire “top 4” had a nightmare season. Fair play, but you’d think they were Juventus or something the way they now view traditionally similar sized clubs to them.

I'm going to be cheering on Southampton to the FA Cup. Very boring if one of the other 3 win it.
However I also hope we get into the Europa League.
I'm going to have my cake and eat it!

If we make it, then great, if we don't, then we weren't ready. The progression of the club is very encouraging.

This is why I just relax nowadays were the clarets are concerned and enjoy it.

I think you'll find, Checkov, the expression order is "eat cake and have it," - apologies, just a nit of mine. The 20th century version you refer to is illogical

I agree. This whole thing about 7th is getting us to the point where we'll be wailing and whining for finishing 8th or 9th in the Prem.

I'd love a European trip, I'm sure we all would, and if it happens then great. On the other hand, there's no question it will impact on our Prem season next year and I don't think we're quite at the point where staying up every year is such a formality we can play 473 Europa League ties from July onwards and still be fine.
