Why's it disrespectful? Who cares? It's just a song. It doesn't actually really mean anything.
I was having a **** during it.

Yes.Carport wrote:You really need me to explain why it’s disrespectful! Oh dear!
What is disrespectful about chewing gum during a national anthem of a country he isn't from? Is it any more disrespectful than the England squad standing there gormless pretending to mouth the words half arsed?
Re: Mourinho chewing gum - National Anthem!
Not more disrespectful no but still disrespectful to the country in which he has been allowed to ply his trade for many years. It matters not that he’s not British. Maybe I’m in a minority on this. Would be interesting to see what others think. Maybe I’m old school.ClaretAndJew wrote:Yes.

He's not one of us, if he chooses not to sing it or to chew his gum what's the issue?
I don't sing the anthem when it's on, I can only assume you were stood there in your front room belting it out.

Maybe you are in a minority, Carport, but I'm proud to be part of that minority. The very people who complain about this country going to the dogs are the ones who have forgotten what respect is.Carport wrote:Not more disrespectful no but still disrespectful to the country in which he has been allowed to ply his trade for many years. I couldn't care less about Mourinho. He has shown many times what a poor specimen of a human being he is. But I do care when our own show a distinct lack of respect. Old school we may be but standards have been sliding for many years now.
Our national anthem is not great but it is what it is and to show it disrespect is to stick up two fingers at our queen and country.

It’s a song, a terrible song, about an unelected head of state and a made up deity. Most English don’t sing it, why should we expect some Portuguese bloke to.

And that's why, fellow Clarets, this country has been 'going to the dog's' for some years.

I could go into an abundance of reasons as to why I am respectful but I can't be arsed.
Also, the country has gone to the dogs? In what way?

I live in a foreign country. When this countrys’ anthem is played and the locals stand I stand. I dont sing it it means nothing to me but I dont talk and I dont chew gum so the posters original point is right but maybe the correct word to use is discourteous

Do people stand for the national anthem if they are alone in a room?
Re: Mourinho chewing gum - National Anthem!
Seems to me the left seem to get offended on behalf of others (who may not be offended themselves) whereas nationalists get offended on their own behalf.

Re: Mourinho chewing gum - National Anthem!
Some of us sing the National Anthem, some don't.
Plenty of those commenting on here and displaying an attitude of 'so what' are the first to pipe up about peoples rights, lack of respect for others and suchlike.
I agree with those that believe there is a general lack of respect and it isn't going to work it's way back into this modern society anytime soon.
I shall be on parade in Blackpool in November, I will sing the National Anthem with gusto and I will shed more than a tear for those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Many were from this area and the majority would be disheartened with the society that has superceded them.
If you don't care for the Monarchy and the core values we were taught that's fine but please don't be hypocritical by having a go at those who do care.
This messageboard is supposed to have one thing in common for all of us, a love of Burnley FC but sometimes I doubt myself for thinking that.
Up the Clarets!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declinism" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Man chews gum. Ergo, proof of decline of Western civilisation.Declinism is the belief that a society or institution is tending towards decline. Particularly, it is the predisposition, possibly due to cognitive bias, such as rosy retrospection, to view the past more favourably and future negatively.
(...)
Declinism has been found to be rather widespread in the United Kingdom. In a 2015 survey, 70% of Britons agreed with the statement that “things are worse than they used to be,” even though at the time Britons were in fact “richer, healthier and longer-living than ever before.” However, it was also mentioned that many of the things that older people mourn from their youths were no longer existant (sic) in modern society.
British historian Robert Tombs suggested that the United Kingdom has faced several 'bouts' of Declinism, as far back as the 1880s when German competition in manufactured goods was first felt and then again in the 1960s and 1970s, with economic worries, rapid decolonisation and a perception of dwindling power and influence in every field. Tombs however, concluded that "Declinism is at best a distortion of reality" and denied suggestions that Britain was no longer the great power it once was.
In France, declinism has been described as a "booming industry" with poular (sic) authors such as Michel Onfray writing books and articles exploring failings of France and the West. French Declinsim (sic...are you ****ing serious, wikipedia???) has been related to the counter-Enlightenment of the early 19th century, and also to the late 1970s with the end of three decades of post World War 2 economic growth. In modern times, the phenomenon has picked up velocity and cut across the political spectrum with several variations of “déclinisme” emerging, from Catholic reactionaries to nonreligious thinkers questioning national identity and political corruption.

I don’t understand this patriotism nonsense. Especially with all this wedding stuff. Didn’t watch a single second of it. All those people who lined the streets, sleeping rough just to catch a glimpse are morons, in my opinion.
I’ll never sing the national anthem. Pointless. I used that time at Wembley in 2009 to check my phone for messages.

Some of the left, sure. But i think it's important to understand that nationalists are getting offended by someone chewing gum.
