Train Advice

Post by Dyched » Thu Jun 07, 2018 9:57 am

Hope someone can help. I need to get from Burnley to London Stansted for a 14.10 flight on 27 June. Ryanair to Copenhagen so getting at the airport around 12.30/1pm should be reyt I reckon. Anyway what’s the best way to get there??

The earliest train possible two days beforehand should get you there, just.

Ahh Reliable. The word I feared hearing. That actually looks a decent route and price.

Hi Dyched,

Best all-train route will most likely be Burnley Manchester Road > Leeds > Peterborough > Stansted.
That'd take you about 5 hours I think with a wait between trains. It'll cost you a fair old wedge though even if you book in advance.
Otherwise, I'd suggest a bus to Manchester, then go from Piccadilly to Euston, Euston to Liverpool Street and down to Stansted from there. You'd have to lug your stuff around the underground though.

MKC93 Thanks, what Rick said too!

How reliable actually are the trains. I rarely use them and when I do they get cancelled (picc-man airport) twice recently.

I was looking at x43 to manchester, picc - euston then tube/train to stansted

VT are pretty solid most of the time, especially out of terminus stations like Piccadilly. 3 trains to Euston per hour I believe.
As for Liverpool St to Stansted, there's probably a train every 10-15 minutes.

As for the tube, walk to Euston Square (signposted 400m from Euston)
You can hop on either the Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan or Circle line straight to Liverpool St from there.
It'll be fairly quiet there and you'll be on before the folks at King's Cross too.

I know transport by train has takien an absolute battering in the past couple of months but with the exception of Northern, everything else is extremely reliable.

For Euston to Stansted I'd actually get the Victoria line to Tottenham Hale and transfer to the Stansted train there. Slightly quicker and means you don't have to battle your way around Liverpool street.

I'd also look at Burnley Manchester Road - Preston - Euston (assuming Northern is slightly less shambolic by that time).

They'll all take about the same so just choose whichever is cheapest.

Thanks MKC! Booked Liverpool St to Stansted Airport (anytime return) so I presume I can go on any train on that route?? As I say rarely use them so don’t exactly nonthe rules.

If I arrive at Euston at 11.40
Tube to Liverpool Street
Leave Liverpool Street for Stansted at 12.10 arrive 12.55
Fly at 14.10

Is that cutting it abit to fine. The train arriving at 11.20 into Euston is £30 more but probably safer??

Ive used it a few times abroad for getting about via Subway/Metro etc and the times have been off. Maybe ok here but just wanted people who actually use trains advice. All I hear is trains are unreliable at best.

As has been said before, the trains aren't that unreliable outside the local issues we're having in the north. But, for football matches, holidays, concerts, whatever - I'd always leave myself an hour's leeway. It's just not worth the sweat.

Apart from First Hull (worst operator in the country), East Coast, Grand Central, Transpennine Express which all have worse performance scores than Northern.

That's mainly because Northern's recent/current issues have not been included yet. Over 90% of all trains arrive within 10 minutes of schedule and over 99% of them within 30 minutes of scheduled time. The remainder will either not turn up or be significantly delayed. 0707 Burnley M/cr Rd>Preston@0747; 0759 Preston>Euston@1009; 1055 Liverpool St>Stansted@1144 cost £148. Or for only £49: 0721 Burnley M/cr Rd>Leeds@0838; 0945 Leeds>Peterborough@1107; 1118 Peterborough>Stansted@1240!

Alternatively look for a coach or megabus.

Right.

Ive looked at trains etc.

I found a flight
Man - Cologne £11
9am - 11.35am
Cologne - Copenhagen £16
2pm - 15.25pm

I cant cancel my outbound flight. So if I don’t get it will I still be able to get my inbound flight (copenhagen-stansted)

Then get the trains back from Stansted. Its works out around £50 cheaper taking into account £10 loss on outbound flight and £10 cancel fee for the train (liverpool street - stansted). Plus saves ******* about for hours

Over the past year to May 26th, only 74.5% of First Hull's have turned up within 5 minutes of their scheduled termination time (10 minutes for long distance), which is pretty poor.

Northern were at 86% but obviously that's gone down the pan now. The national score was 87.3% but it's worth remembering that this is bolstered by TfL Rail and London Overground which are both punctual and run a lot of trains.

Often not, you'll have to check the T&Cs and maybe give them a ring.

I'd have thought so. They're all sold separately - it's not like buying a return ticket with a long haul operator where if you miss a leg you're goosed. But check with their customer services or whatever. Enjoy the flødebolle.

Anytime returns cover you for absolutely any train at any time of day, even peak hours.
I'd give yourself a good 2 hours from when you arrive at the airport for your flight.

Thanks everybody for the help!!

Ive decided
X43

Fly
Man - Cologne
2 hour wait
Cologne - Copenhagen

Trains on the way back. Im only going for a gig so will fly back the morning after and take the trains home. Thanks all. As I said taking into account missing a flight plus £10 refund fee I’ll be saving roughly £50/£60.

Thanks again!!

I hope our Europa League outings aint this stressfull. Oh and don’t book gig tickets after a few pints!!!!
