Pickford
Re: Pickford
Not too sure what he did in the first-half scramble. Good job a former Claret cleared it off the line.

Re: Pickford
All very well Pickford being a league1 midfielder, but I am more convinced than ever that Pope is the best keeper by far in the England squad. Pickford was tripe in the game at Turf Moor this season, and he was tripe tonight.
Re: Pickford
Needs to spend some time with Billy Mercer
Re: Pickford
Obviously I'm biased as a Claret, but I was surprised at Pickford 'punching' 2 or 3 what appeared to be fairly routine shots (more or less straight at him); as for the goal, defender should have done better, but having said that, I honestly think Pope would've saved it - reached it and tipped it round. Pickford looked a bit 'rabbit in the headlights' tonight, for no apparent reason, wasn't under any great pressure. Pope wont get a look in though, he's just not 'well known enough' if you get my drift.

Re: Pickford
The game at the Turf against Everton summed him up perfectly, zero command of the six yard area and weak in every aspect of his game.
Then his unbelievable error of judgement to stay on his line for Ash's goal was almost schoolboy-like.
Nick must despair at not being able to get in this team.

Pickford was getting some stick from the BBC pundits. Dixon says he should have used his right hand and Giggs says he kept palming out instead of punching
Giggs says that Colombia will have spotted this and he will be punished.

Re: Pickford
A keeper who flats about in goal does not give confide ce to his defenders and subsequently, they were all diving in to help too. Liability and his arms are definitely short! Becomes noticeable, once pointed out.
If England are to win the WC....it cannot be with the nervous wreck of a keeper.

Re: Pickford
Not going to happen but I wouldn’t want to see Pope brought into the team now anyway. The pressure on a keeper brought into a knockout game in a World Cup with just half n hour of international experience would surely be overwhelming. If he got picked and cost us a game it could destroy him.

Was it Heaton’s full debut for England against France in a friendly when he pushed one straight back to the striker following in. Wasn’t he also culpable for a Spain goal in a friendly as well.

Re: Pickford
You have to ignore the fact Pickford isn't great on crosses, parries shots back into danger areas and struggles being able to cover the width of his goals because he can dink a ball 40 yards to a full back with 5 yard of space to run into.
Well that is what the know nothing know-alls would have you believe

Re: Pickford
Those pundits at the BBC, and others, may be slagging off Pickford now but he was the unanimous choice of all of them to be the number one goalkeeper at the world cup for England. I don't recall a major disagreement with Gary and Shearer and Danny Murphy putting across the case for Nick Pope. How many times have these pundits watched Pickford on our TV screens? Obviously they never picked up his palming of the ball back into play until last night. Says more about them as pundits than it does about Pickford as a goalkeeper.

Re: Pickford
I was probably most concerned by the 2 occasions on which Pickford failed to claim lose balls in the middle of his goal mouth, leading to scrambles that England were very fortunate to get away with. The two shots he pushed out centrally were also a bit concerning, but plenty of keepers have done that in this competition and so I don't know if the ball might be partially responsible for that - the first shot certainly moved later.
He might have done better with the goal, although its a fine strike and everyone's entitled to their own technique. Pope's is a bit unorthodox in places.
Does his ability with this feet redeem any of this? No of course not. He's in the team not because of his ability with this feet, but because he's rated as being at least as good a keeper with his hands as the other keepers, and his distribution is the added bonus that makes him perceived as the best of the crop.
But - for all that, I don't know if this intense analysis is helpful. Playing for England in a world cup is a pressure cooker. Pickford has had two games where he's been a virtual spectator and he'll probably be better for an evening where he's been thrust into meaningful action, even if it wasn't his finest night.

Re: Pickford
I agree with Spice. For better or worse hes the no 1. He needed properly testing earlier when bringing in Pope ir Butland. I think he will cost us at least 1 goal kust because his decision making is so poor. Against Panama he came right out and almost git in trouble. And last night his inability tp dominante was spared by some decentt defending.
But we are where we are and we have to stick with him. More useful was confirmation that Dier Jones and Rose are back up at best.

God almighty do people really think Pickford should have saved the goal ?
He actually got a very very good take off lift and made a good stab at it . Not my fav keeper as he’s no better or worse than most top keepers with his feet .Imo he spends too long on the ball before releasing runs with it when pass would do.
Pickford was a child prodigy and always on the FA radar he’s very good though I don’t like his punching .Punching has made a return to the game due to the sheer speed and unpredictability of modern balls , mos club academies don’t let the kids anywhere near a prem ball till u12/13 and even then matches only

Re: Pickford
i like pope, but southgate wants to win this tournament too, he must know pope has been on best form prior to world cup, yet he opted to go with pickford.
those tv panels were saying on both channels that pickford was suspect, dixon even said he had phoned a mate at 1/2 time who was a goalkeeper coach and even he said pickford was at fault. and all the others saying how he should have used his other hand, no need to dive like that, no need to shove ball back into danger zones etc.
All a bit harsh in my view, looked a pretty good goal to me.
Maybe southgate has seen a bit of nervousness from pope in training or something, either way, other outfield players last night were borderline useless, not fair to single out the keeper. Dier has been mentioned as one particular dud,

David Seaman has been critical of Pickford today, mainly about his technique when parrying shots.
Actually, his general goalkeeping technique reminds me of Paul Robinson.

Re: Pickford
Your primary job as a goalkeeper is to stop the ball going past you into the net. Pickford made a decent attempt to make the save and got his fingertips to the ball. Other times he stopped the ball getting past him and pushed the ball away - you can't always get it to go where you want.
That said it just highlights that he's not an ideal build for a keeper

History with the FA
History with Southgate
His club goalkeeping coach is England's goalkeeping coach
Many pundits lauded him despite not having a background in goalkeeping themselves
With Heaton absent - a lack of viable alternatives
But I'm not claiming he's a clown

Re: Pickford
Immediately after the match Southgate was asked how he felt. He seemed a little uncertain about some aspects. I think one of those was that it had just dawned on him that Pickford isn't a very good keeper: three mistakes that could have resulted in conceding a goal and not being tall enough/having the reach to save the one that did go in.
Ah well, let's see how we get on against Colombia.
