What irritates you most about our style of play?
For me it’s throw ins.
Watching this World Cup almost all teams take quick incisive throw ins.
We invariably hesitate, prat around and then throw the ball down the line only to lose it more often than not.

I wonder how we ever manage to get any points if we even lose the ball more often than not from throw ins.
Or

There hasn't been a lot wrong with our style of play over the past few years has there?
OK, so we're not always a free-flowing attacking side (although we have been at times under Dyche) but which masochist amongst us would forgo the results and the quality of play just to be a little bit easier on the eye?

Agree not a lot wrong and I’m proud of what we’ve achieved. Our standard appriach to throw ins is just something that frustrates me. I get that the full backs should normally take them as part of our game plan, but all too often they are long drawn out and predictable in their execution. All World Cup teams seem to take them quickly with much better impact in my opinion.

Nothing, I genuinely enjoy how well we defend as a team. It’s a part of football as much as attacking.

The one thing that irritates me most is when a corner doesn't clear the opposition's first man. That's nothing to do with our style of play though and of course isnt something that just applies to us. But it really annoys me when it happens. It probably happened less last season though. Can't say I've noticed anything about throw-ins specific to us. I guess there is sometimes less space in the PL with teams pressing more than international football.

As a club we are punching way above our weight, something as basic as a throw in can make a difference imho. As Dyche says - attention to detail

Why are we so static at throw ins ? I remember the team that had Nogan in was truly woeful at throw ins !!!

Throw ins.
Fannying about, swapping takers and then giving it away. All the while no one looking or arsed to show for the ball.
How many more might we score or chances might we create if we keep the impetus.
We can’t dine out on finishing seventh for ever.

Not a lot to moan about, is there?
A little gripe of mine, and it really is next to nothing is the "inverted winger" thing. I like traditional wing play, but accept it has little place in the modern game, however in my opinion there's little better than watching your winger (Taffy?) tearing the full back a new arsehole

It's certainly not fashionable now. Our last four managers have preferred the inverted winger more often than not although there were times last season when we did finally switch and get JBG on the left with Lennon on the right.boatshed bill wrote:Not a lot to moan about, is there?

Back passing England style instead of attacking with pace down the wings.Breaking a move up just outside the oppositions box the playing it all the way to Nick to have him hoof the ball back where it was.

We often forget that we do play good good football ask Everton but the + we have over most other teams is that we have target men we can change our style & use to try & open good teams up or help defend as a team, it’s easy to listen to other managers who try to label us when they have had their pants taken down & arses slapped.

Nothing particular about this team but we have played statues at our throw-ins for as long as I can remember. We seem to use them as an opportunity to have a breather

Not a lot to moan about but throw ins ( Lowton particularly takes ages) and corners which could be much better.

Re: What irritates you most about our style of play?
Another vote for the throw ins thing. It does frustrate me that we can be so static at throw ins, but I understand why it is - we play in a very structured manner and the players have very specific roles, so it makes it relatively easy for opponents to predict how is going to show for it. Its a mild gripe but I'll take it because that structure has underpinned our success.
I don't understand the gripe about inverted wingers. The logic is obvious, and its generally worked for us, and I think the assumption that every winger prefers the side of the pitch which is also his strongest foot is wrong. JBG, for example, prefers the right - he's said as much. I heard Jermaine Jenas explaining why he preferred being on his "wrong" side on 5 Live last week. It gives the player passing options, helps him protect the ball by getting his body between the defender and the ball on his stronger foot, gives him more freedom to roam in his movement so helps him get involved in the game, gives him more opportunity to shoot by coming inside. So lots going for it. It isn't every winger's preference, of course, and Lennon is one who definitely does prefer the right, so if we're going to accommodate him next season then we'll have to adapt a bit.
The other thing I'd love to see us to occasionally, and which frustrated me a touch at times last season, is that our "plan B" was often to go from our fairly rigid 4-5-1 to a more 4-4-2. I'm sure we were working on making our 4-3-3/4-5-1 more flexible at times last season, but occasionally (and especially when chasing the game), I'd love to see us take the handbrake off the wide players and let them bomb on more, with the 3rd midfielder being given more freedom to interchange with/cover for the wide players. It may well be that that is what Dyche has in mind for next season, although the pursuit of Rodriguez suggests if anything, he's tempted to return to a more rigid 4-4-1-1 set up. And its not really a gripe, its more the way I'd personally love to see us evolve into a more flexible, fluid and creative team. But don't get me wrong, I'll happily stick with what we do now if it continues to deliver the results and there's very little to complain about in the way we play now.

Overachieving staying in the Championship? Do you really believe that? is that because we aren't a City club with a huge catchment area? utter bllocks, some fans have absolutely no expectation or hope at all. Just because we have been successful it doesn't mean everything is perfect, there is ALWAYS things that can be done better, even if you're Pep Guardiola. Stop sitting on the fence, along for the ride type because it's so fake, you say ''in reality we would be overachieving staying in the Championship'' but guess what, the reality is we're currently a PL club, wake up, grab your nut sack and stop acting like a mouse.Burnleyareback2 wrote:We finished 7th in the Premier League a few weeks ago, for a club that in reality would be overachieving staying in the championship. Re: What irritates you most about our style of play?
The only thing that annoys me at times is we lack a real flair player who can beat two or three men at once. Someone in the ilk of little or Blake. The reason for this is those types of players cost 50 million plus in the premier league so not much that can be done about it
Re: What irritates you most about our style of play?
Thought this was about England. The thing that irritates me about our style of play (Burnley) is that since 1987 apart from a few hiccups say from 1995-1998 and then BK appeared, we have been on the up. Cotts gets slammed for keeping us in the Championship with no money post ITV Digital, OC for leaving after we got promoted (he left in a most awful way) Laws left with us about 7th in Championship, Eddie brought in Ings, Austin,Shackell, Grant, Tripps, Mee, Stanislas. Were it not for the fact that I bleed claret (blue when deprived of oxygen) we really have been served a bag of s**t for the last 31 years haven"t we?
