Found one, Mardale Green in Mardale Valley (Haweswater) - not 1976 though.
Excellent and fascinating article in the link below.

I was in Newquay that summer. We might have bumped into each other. We were probably on the same campsite.Dark Cloud wrote:I was an 18 year old student in that long hot summer of 76 and like many others above I also took a summer job with a building contractor. It was bloody hot/thirsty work, but working shirt off and finishing every day sitting outside some pub or other was absolutely brilliant. Plus I took 2 weeks off right at the height to visit Newquay staying in a tent with 3 mates . Scorching, water restrictions, blind drunk most evenings and tons of girls wearing next to nowt! Plus the background soundtrack of "The Boys Are Back", "Don't Go Breaking My heart" and even the ubiquitous "Dancing Queen" which came out that summer and which always takes me back.....

Re: The summer of 1976...
We traveled on the "Yelloway" overnight from Rochdale and turned up on the Saturday morning with nothing booked thinking it would be all very straightforward. We arrived to find absolute mayhem with hundreds of people looking for accommodation and campsites and even though some sites had space, we were told groups of lads (4 of us) were usually barred as they tended to upset the families. We were in the tourist office which was like a rugby scrum and were on the brink of giving up having been told several times to simply go home, but a random bloke overheard our conversation, felt sorry for us and said he'd sort us out as his mate had a sight at St Mawgan close by. He made us promise to behave if he vouched for us as it was a family site, which we did (promise), and we got fixed up. We were model holidaymakers for about 3 days after which we were drunk, loud, sick and usually arguing with each other, especially as we had to either catch the bus or a taxi into Newquay and back which was eating all our dosh. After 2 weeks I actually came back with just 20p in my pocket and hadn't eaten a thing for 2 days.Quicknick wrote:I was in Newquay that summer. We might have bumped into each other. Would that be the large campsite with it's own nightclub? Jim Davidson had just won New Faces Final on the Saturday night but was already booked for that week. It was a long week!!!Quicknick wrote:I was in Newquay that summer. We might have bumped into each other. We were probably on the same campsite.

How can any of you trust the liberal "scientists" saying it's going to be hot? F'kin shills.

Re: The summer of 1976...
What a wonderful summer, I went down to Torquay with one lad and six girls, all from Burnley area looking for summer jobs for a couple of months, as we were all students.
Torquay was quite the place back then, before Ibiza, Corfu, Majorca,
Tenerife, and Lanzarotte changed things.
We all got jobs within 36 hours ( barman, chambermaids, waitresses and the sun never stopped shining. I was a porter in the San Remo Hotel on Belgrave Rd ( just up from the metal bridge over the coast road).
I had two day shifts to do, and two night shifts so I could get some beach time and ‘social time’..I got plenty of tips and all meals provided when working.... the Compass Club, the Hideaway, the 400 Club, Tiffs and the recently opened Coral Island, which had the best sound system I had ever heard... a summer I will never forget.

Re: The summer of 1976...
I was working at the Culvert filling station as a holiday job, so I was inside for most of the heat wave. With all my earnings I bought a metallic light blue limited edition Dawes 55 push bike which was my pride and joy. Some b4stard nicked it shortly after and the b4stard insurance company didn't pay out. Happy days.

Re: The summer of 1976...
The campsite we were at did have some kind of club/bar attached, but we never frequented it, preferring to go into town. I DO remember "Emporer Rosco" from radio 1 turning up to do a gig in a nightclub in Newquay and totally by chance we met him outside in the late afternoon just as he pulled up. He was the guy in the huge Yank tank, 50's style convertible which kind of drew our attention!! Seemed a nice chap tbh, but he's probably locked up now for touching girl's bottoms!LoveCurryPies wrote:Would that be the large campsite with it's own nightclub? We also met "Jigsaw" who were at the height of their short lived, one hit wonder fame and were at a record shop promoting their album.

Happy days.

We were on a different site. It had a toilet. That's all.LoveCurryPies wrote:Would that be the large campsite with it's own nightclub? Jim Davidson had just won New Faces Final on the Saturday night but was already booked for that week. It was a long week!!!
I remember a great pub in Newquay called Spider's Web. Fantastic jukebox with prog rock and everything you could imagine on it. These were the days before stag dos and bouncers on every pub.
Bring back the unregulated 70s.

Ambleside was a cracking place. I stayed there with a girlfriend the year after.dougcollins wrote:76. Camped in Wray Castle(Ambleside), booked for a week, stayed for three, ran out of money half way through the second.

Was in a tent in Brittany, plenty of vin rouge flowing. Our first son was conceived.
