Some of the recent documentaries, including the one about the Spice epidemic, was incredible.

There was a union representative for Prison Officers on the radio the other day and he essentially said that the ratio of prisoners to PO's has gotten so out of control that it easier for the PO's now to try and pacify the prisoners because if they tried to apply the rules hard and fast they would be putting themselves in life-threatening positions.

If they spent 23 hours inside spartan cells and had to cr4p in a bucket, they wouldnt want to go back. The liberal ‘touchy-feely’ approach isn’t working, so we need to give prison more of a deterrent slant rather than a rehabilitation holiday.

Along with today's alarming rise in crime, you've got to hand it to the Tories, this austerity lark is certainly making life so much better. I rest easier in my bed knowing that we owe so much less money as a country to whoever the hell we are supposed to owe it to.

Although I am not defending the state of our prisons, I can’t understand how anyone would want to take away the rehabilitation slant to prison.

Look at American prisons vs Scandinavian prisons and look at the reoffending rates

I always laugh when I heard the prisons in this country described as a “holiday camp”, what holidays have you lot been going on? If I was at a hotel in Spain surrounded by violent nutters out of their nut on spice I reckon I’d barricade myself in my room.

Didn’t watch the programme, but I bet half the people who talk about prisons being “like a holiday camp” would cry like a baby at the prospect of a stint inside.

I know would.

Plenty of people pay good money for that experience. Its called two weeks all inclusive at the mars / Jupiter / saturno complex in alcudia.

Absolutely. Unfortunately, it's neither a deterrent for the lads who are in there all the time nor has anything like the time and money to offer rehabilitation needed.

At the moment, it appears to be a holding pen for mental patients, drug addicts and dealers. But still, not exactly a holiday camp.

Don't get me wrong they don't look like nice places, but if you were homeless and Winter was approaching would you consider it for a warm place to sleep and 3 square meals? Just hypothetically.

It seems to me the prisons have gone from one extreme to the other and now they appear to have little or no deterrent effect for career criminals. I’m sure there is a middle ground which would have a the required deterrent effect for the no-hopers, whilst still being able to rehabilitate the ‘occasional’ offender. Prison should always have an element of punishment because that is what they are there for.

I think taking away their liberty is generally considered punishment. What other forms of punishment would you suggest?

The Singapore system works ok, harsh sentences, some for what we would describe as minor offences resulting in few of those offences being committed.

The person who alluded to those getting banged up for Winter, unfortunately that happens in that some “sofa surf” in the summer and then get a six month in total stretch.

The issue stems mainly from our care system, something like 65% of the prison population have been in care in their lives, sort the care system out first would be a start.

My mates brother is currently locked up and he texts or rings her all the time on a mobile he's got.
Usually asking for money to be transferred to someone to pay for his drugs that he's getting inside prison.

No phones, supervised internet, stricter discipline, no-contact visits etc. IMO, the accommodation should be more spartan with a stronger emphasis on rehabilitation through appropriate classes and qualifications. People should come out in a better position to re-integrate into society but don’t want to go back in under any circumstances.

People should be terrified of going to prison. They should crawl out of the place on all fours emaciated covered in flea bites and the likes they should beg their gang mates and criminal associates to change their ways. The state should ensure though they start work be it voluntary ie picking litter to get their benefits until they get a proper job.
Also you should pay for your stay in prison as we have to when relations end up in the care system.

I should imagine the screws want as easy life as possible it's poor pay, anti social hrs, long hrs. Some of the suggestions would lead to riots & violence, I should imagine that's the last thing a PO needs, some of us don't put the shifts in on the frontline.
