Theresa May could have chosen to attent at any point before Corbyn, if she wished. And as has been pointed out, calling the election at a time when she expected to win in a massive landslide was also a tactical ploy.dermotdermot wrote:Only at the last minute, IT. A tactical ploy.

Mrs May visited a friend of my mum's workplace today. In advance of this 'drop in' every member of staff were 'interviewed' in relation to their political allegiances and also had to present their mobiles to her security detail for 'security checks'.

With what's been going on lately that's probably not a bad idea.ClaretDiver wrote:Mrs May visited a friend of my mum's workplace today. You're right Vegas, it was rather petty and a total waste of time. Even for rent a mob outside. Not sure where they found the audience though.
Re: The political leaders debate tonight.
Corbyn didn't do himself any harm, but it's a missed opportunity there, if he was better on the night he could have won more ground. Tories the biggest losers on the night, sending Amber Rudd, whose Dad just died on Monday shows a weakness from Theresa May that undecided voters won't like at all.
Angus Robertson was pretty good as was Caroline Lucas, Lucas probably more so. Farron's a knob but had a few funny one liners. Wood, Nuttall and Rudd were poor, Corbyn just above them three.
The format doesn't really work with seven there, it's too shouty, too disorganised, the chairwoman was poor at keeping control.
Crowd was definitely more left than right, either that or the right wingers thought Rudd and Nuttall were shite like the rest of us.

Not sure how anyone could claim to have come out of that dross as done well. Lasted less than 10 minutes due to the awful setting up, being allowed to shout over each other and a hand picked typical BBC audience.

Hatfield, my apologies as I wrote that at some godforsaken insomniac hour. What I failed to add was that anyone who claimed to support Labour was asked to leave the offices whilst she did her tour....
Re: The political leaders debate tonight.
The audience was hand picked but not by the BBC, apparently.
Re: The political leaders debate tonight.
It was like the worst episode of 15 to 1 imaginable. Really unimpressed with new style of 'debate' where it appears interrupting, jeering and ridiculing by both combatants and audience alike is perfectly acceptable. A complete lack of manners and etiquette by people you'd like to think know how to conduct themselves.

Re: The political leaders debate tonight.
At the beginning it was explained that the audience was a mix people with differing views (overall neutral but individually partisan) and you could see that when jeers and applause were issued - it seemed half applauded whilst the other half didn't. There were jeers and laughs in the same way.dermotdermot wrote:It was a fairly neutral crowd but Corbyn's supporters will always make more noise. He didn't sway the audience. He was mundane.
Overall it was another ineffective programme with too many interruptions and more than one person speaking. In the end the point that the Conservatives are making - the threat of the 'coalition of chaos' - is the only conclusion I can draw.
It could well be that, like Cameron and the Referendum, May has ballsed up by calling this election and we may end up in a bigger political mess then before. Where we go from there who knows.
Re: The political leaders debate tonight.
The idea of TV debates like this came from America (I think)
The difference is they have 2 leaders debating, not 7.
Its annoying when an audience members asks a question which was clearly aimed at Corbyn or Rudd, and the presenter sent the question to the Greens so they could have a chance to talk
They should have this debate with just the 3 main parties. Have separate debates in Scotland and Wales

Just unbelievable...well..maybe not. Any resident Tories on here can hazard a guess why this sort of 'cleansing' process is taking place?
I guess it wouldn't look good would it, if a stray Labour voter from 'SUPPLIES' asked her a difficult question while she's wandering about glad-handing, what with all those TV cameras there and everything.

i don't think it really matters whether the audience is biased. it was clearly a more tory audience on the sky/channel 4 debate the other day but corbyn fared far better than may.

What I got from last night's debate is yet again is it's all smoke and mirrors for the Tories (I've seen better smoke and mirror acts on Britain's Got Talent). They got away with it with Camoron because he was a very good orator and salesman. May and their ilk aren't. I just think that the entire Tory campaign has showed their arrogance towards the electorate in general

Speaking of Lynton Crosby, this campaign reminds me of the shockingly bad Mayoral election campaign he ran where his tactics, particularly the focus on the opposition rather than his own candidate and their policies, made the opposition more and more popular.AndrewJB wrote:During the '83 election the Tories started out with a poll lead and increased it as the days went by. That's not happening in this election, and if anything the momentum is definitely with Labour. On the one hand the Tories have fought the election under Crosby's stewardship (he lost elections in Canada and London recently), and on the other Corbyn has come across better than many people had thought, and the Labour manifesto has given everyone a clearly different option to Tory austerity. Whatever the outcome the lazy mantra of Corbyn being 'useless' won't wash anymore.
