Re: Walking 5 Miles Daily (weight loss)
I've lost 13 lbs since 26th May by controlling calories only because I'm too lazy to go the gym (although I do play a game of 7-a-side football once a week). Most of that loss was done in the first two weeks and I've plateaued a bit now so probably getting out and about for a walk would help me lose more weight. Would like to lose another 2-3 stone ideally to get back to a decent BMI.

I didn't know we were adding starting weights. I should have done that a few weeks ago when I was over 15st. Currently I'm 14st 2lbs. Not sure I can lose much but I can certainly improve my general fitness with a bit of walking.

My starting weight last year was 19'3lbs, I had a Hernia operation in 1996 and it had tore again, so the Dr who was to repair it said I had to get down to 90-100kgs or he would not operate and I got down to 99kgs and he operated within 2 weeks, don't you just love the Germans very efficient, but that is not just walking have changed how I eat over the last 12 months but would still love to get to around 15 stones.ClaretTony wrote:I didn't know we were adding starting weights. Re: Walking 5 Miles Daily (weight loss)
Brilliant to get that weight off. I'm a sensible eater generally, far better than I used to be, but I probably just eat too much. I did get up to around 17st at one point around ten years ago but hovered around 15st for much of the time since. Other than when I was ill five years ago, this is the lowest I've been in years.CnBtruntru wrote:My starting weight last year was 19'3lbs, I had a Hernia operation in 1996 and it had tore again, so the Dr who was to repair it said I had to get down to 90-100kgs or he would not operate and I got down to 99kgs and he operated within 2 weeks, don't you just love the Germans very efficient, but that is not just walking have changed how I eat over the last 12 months but would still love to get to around 15 stones.

Re: Walking 5 Miles Daily (weight loss)
Yeah, I think adding a starting weight (or current weight if not yet done) will help. I'll weigh-in tomorrow, as I prefer to weigh myself first thing in the morning. I did 2-2.5 miles today which took around 45 minutes. That involved walking past a Subway and a Greggs as well. Also managed to chug 2 litres of water down me, which should help with water retention and stop picking at food as much.

Re: Walking 5 Miles Daily (weight loss)
My Samsung Health says I walked 13.03km (= 8 miles) today. I don't believe it. It also says I achieved that distance in (only) 12,592 steps. It can't be right. I'm normally somewhere around 1,300 steps per kilometre. It also says I "burned" 750 kcal. These are totals for the day: walked to station, train to London, tube to Canary Wharf, some walking around CW and then back home. The last leg I walked 15 mins from station to home, 1.5 km. This is one of my regular "calibration" walks to check the phone is measuring correctly. Distance and time are "spot on, tracked/mapped on gps," but says steps were 1,758. I'm guessing the monitors are fooled by escalators - and whether I walk or stand.
A question: does the distance walked count if it is broken into several segments separated by (I) train rides; (2) lunch: (3) coffee and more tube/train rides? I strolled to the station in the morning and only walked back at a faster pace (6.0 km/h) on the way home.
Weight: now about 72 kg (I need to check), 11st 5lbs (approx.). I was 67 kg in January - before I stopped going to the gym, and 80 kg before Feb-2016.

Re: Walking 5 Miles Daily (weight loss)
I read that to mean that you have to burn 3500 calories to lose a pound on weight. Is that right. Seems like a hell of a lot.FactualFrank wrote:You've lost water weight. You don't lose 3 pounds in fat (3 x 3500 calories) by going for a run.
Power walking burns more calories than running. You've missed out what I said - over a set distance.
You jog 5 miles. You complete the distance sooner. You walk 5 miles - lower BPM but it takes you a lot longer. Overall, going off the phone apps I've used, you burn slightly more doing a power walk than you do a run.

So 'they' say, yeah. I've not looked into the formulas they use. Just do a quick Google, it'll tell you more. I don't worry too much about it though. Everytime I've mixed common sense with walking, I've lost weight. Especially the belly fat.TheFamilyCat wrote:I read that to mean that you have to burn 3500 calories to lose a pound on weight. Re: Walking 5 Miles Daily (weight loss)
My second walk today. I've done 4.3km in 53 mins which I'm pleased with. I don't think any of it is flat, always on a steep incline up or down.
I could see in front of me today as well. The Turf looks good from on high.

Re: Walking 5 Miles Daily (weight loss)
I've enjoyed 8.6kms walk this afternoon - in a little under 2 hours - all on the level around Bushy Park (reference West London thread). Teddington is celebrating 800 years. There was a vintage and classic car rally in Bushy Park. I estimate somewhere between 200-300 vehicles on display. The best I saw was a Ford 1911, the year it was built, not the engine cc.ClaretTony wrote:My second walk today. I've done 4.3km in 53 mins which I'm pleased with. EDIT: It was the Hanworth Classic. According to their website "The Annual Hanworth Classic Event includes over 500 vintage/classic cars/motor bikes/ scooter/military vehicles/vintage bicycles."

No chance of walking on the level here I'm afraid unless I walk to next door but two and back a few times.
I'm hoping to go again tomorrow and will try to repeat Saturday if I can.

If you walked 5 miles every 96 days you could end up in John O'Groats.

One of the last things I did before leaving Burnley was to do that walk to have a last look at the area from " on high" I think it took me the 12hour flight to recover as I wasn't very fit then.ClaretTony wrote:My second walk today. Since I was diagnosed with diabetes, I exercise much more including a brisk walk daily. It certainly helps to control my blood sugar levels.
Re: Walking 5 Miles Daily (weight loss)
Current weight is 14st 5, aiming to lose 2 stone.
Had a day off from walking 5 miles a day yesterday as I scaled Ingleborough on Saturday carry my son so my backs killing. I will get back on it tonight though

Re: Walking 5 Miles Daily (weight loss)
I walk every day. Normally for between an hour and half and two hours during the week.An hour of that is uphill. I walk briskly and estimate my distance to be between 6 and 7 miles. I haven't found an app that I like so far and would welcome any suggestions. At weekends I normally walk for an hour. People are talking about weight loss but there are other benefits too. I'll be 70 next birthday. My theory is keep going as long as you can. You seize up sat in the chair all day when you get older.

Fitbits are geneally good. And becausr you can see what others do it motivates you more. The mrs has one that even tells her to get up if shes been inactive for too long.Elder statesman wrote:I walk every day. Luckily we both like walking. A lot. And its the only thing i can tjink of that explains why i dont add too much weight and eat how i want. I try to eat well but dont get foo hung up on bad days.
Its the best excercise you can do and we are blessed where we live with plenty of good walks.
I probably average 5 or 6 miles a day. Did about 20+ saturday - the joys of close season.
Anyone who can do it should. Its therapuetic as much as anything.
My inspiration was always an old chap named george who lived near me. Every day he walked from near st teds to cliveger and back. Fit as a fiddle. He passed away recently at 97 but until 95 ish he was still doing that walk. I see a lot of old people who struggle and obviously some cant help it. But if you keep moving and active you will benefit in later life. George only stopped I think when he had a fall and he deteriorated after that as do many others. But all the years i knew him (he was 67 ish when i was born and knew my mum right from when she was little too) he kept active and he was of healthy mind as well as body. Definitely the walking in my eyes.
Theres a lot of people who dont understand why i walk as much as i do. But its something we should all do and not take for granted.

I was always led to believe that 4 mph was average walking speed and I'm often being told that I walk fast, especially by Mrs ES, but I couldn't maintain it uphill. Good app though. Thanks and thanks Tony for the help. Hope it works.

Average walking speed is around 5 km/hour... so 3.1 mph/hour.
