A fitting tribute to these two popular servants of our club would be chants at 8 minutes and 27 minutes at our next two home games. Need I say more!

I mentioned in an earlier post that when I saw him in the Cork friendly I wasn't particularly impressed that he was on trial with us. Soon proved me wrong though, again, and I have been happy to consume plentiful amounts of humble pie since. A priceless team man who very quickly found his way into the hearts of Clarets fans.

Possibly a bit of scepticism at the start - but as you say quite understandable given SD was making a few free transfers and not really spending any money. Also got to bear in mind there was more than a few mutterings on the terraces about Dyche in his first 6 months - something he often reminds us of in press conferences / interviews.Rowls wrote:I don't recall any verbal bother for Arfield away at York but I DO remember lots and lots of mutterings. I think I can recall somebody saying he "wasn't good enough" but it's a long time ago now. Let's also put this into perspective and remember that Scotty was a relatively unknown lad who had been a bit-part player who was then cast off by a side who had only recently made it into the Championship.
Scepticism is always a healthy stand point but we need to guard between the fine line between healthy scepticism and downright cynicism. More than anything in the away stands I remember reading a lot of negative comments about Arfield on the old CM site well before he'd kicked a ball for us. Many said he wasn't good enough without ever seeing him kick a ball.
As it is, he entered into a squad which we now know had a fantastic professional and committed attitude and Scotty became a key part of that. It must have helped him grow in confidence and improve as a player but as much as he benefited from that environment he also contributed to it. I suspect he is one of the players who contributed more than most. Perhaps if he'd entered into a squad with a toxic attitude he'd have failed? That's hypothetical and it doesn't matter. What matters is that the Scott Arfield story at Burnley is one of success after success after success.
But yeah, there was a lot of negativity towards Scotty when he first signed, even though I don't recall much more than mutterings on the actual terraces.
It will have been exactly the same with Tom Heaton and David Jones. Tom Heaton had just let in a shed load of goals for a relegated Bristol City and I doubt one Burnley fan was overly enthusiastic when we signed him on a free. And exactly the same reaction when we signed David Jones who had been shockingly bad for Blackburn in the previous season - he had completely lost his confidence and looked awful for them. As for Arfield I bet the vast majority had never heard of him - especially as he was not getting in a struggling Huddersfield side so we did not have a clue whether he was any good.
The rest as they say is history as Scotty for me was a very good player for us from the outset. He was big, strong, skilful and very hungry to do well. I'm guessing he knew what a good player he was himself as reading up on his background he came down from Scotland with a very good reputation and things just never got going for him at Huddersfield. Dyche saw something in him and Scotty repaid us and then some.
I know we are doing absolutely brilliant now but I really love that first Dyche promotion team. I think its my favourite Burnley team in 40 plus years of following them. Great keeper. Tripps at right back. Marney and Jones running the show in centre midfield. Arfield out wide and Ings and Vokes up front terrorising every team and scoring a bagful each. It was a joy to watch all season.

When i say "I forgot" I was trying to be polite but guess that didn't work so just to clarify to say that "Arfield got more grief than plaudits from the crowd, let's not forget that"......is utter sh-ite.Diesel wrote:It's Okay.

Two massive players for us over these last few years and feel genuinely gutted they are leaving. I do, however, agree with many posts it's the right time for both parties.
Those fans who can't see what Scotty has given this team in 5 years really should pack in watching football as it's not for you
Dean Marney has been a fave of mine since he signed. Again, some fans in the early days would give him grief but you could see the energy and quality he gave us.
Hopefully, I'll get to personally thank them both at the POTS evening but they really have been current legends to our amazing club. Something Dyche said on Thursday at a Q & A was the decision to play either player in a farewell game isn't just down to the manager. Both players will be thinking of their next move and getting injured in "say goodbye" game could be a high risk for them.

And Arfield is still on the Canadian National Team (at least for now).

My memory may be awry, but I THINK at the beginning of his first season Scotty was on the bench and no one (even sir Sean) expected him to be a starter, but someone (Wallace?) was injured early doors and he suddenly got his chance and never looked back.

Spot on, Ross needed knee surgery which kept him out for some time. Scott had come on as a sub in the first three games but started the next one, as Wallace's replacement, at Brighton. He went on to start every other game that season apart from the QPR home game when I assume he must have been out injured. I think it was the Doncaster away game when I suddenly realised what a good player we'd got, he was simply outstanding that night.Dark Cloud wrote:My memory may be awry, but I THINK at the beginning of his first season Scotty was on the bench and no one (even sir Sean) expected him to be a starter, but someone (Wallace?) was injured early doors and he suddenly got his chance and never looked back.
I don't think any of us could have known that his substitute appearance at Swansea would be his last for us.
