The range of products that became available was absolutely mind-blowing. I got a Saturday job collecting trolleys at ASDA when it opened.

I once saw a lady customer slam a bottle of champagne onto the checkout and the cork flew out, hitting her in the eye. She screamed and passed out, dropping into her trolly with both legs stuck up in the air.

The senior butcher used to take the finest steak and mince it then label it as cheap mince and buy it himself!

The first big one in Colne was built on the site of the Savoy Cinema on the corner of Market Street and Skelton Street. that closed in 1960.

Scott’s supermarket opened in 1964 in a massive new build despite many protests
It made many corner shops unviable / unsellable

There was tillies field and for a while one just between the golf club and the houses. A school friend of mine's Mum and Dad use to run the Bull and Butcher ( he was Ian Chadwick )
Thanks for the Birthday wishes, did you live round there and play on the Tillies stadium pitch ? (my Memories are great, but I guess as I get older they may improve or get worse lol)
I did live up there but not on the new estate but on one of the original houses prior to the estate off Glen View. We did play on Tillies field but I'm not sure what the Tillies stadium pitch is...! For those not from up there Tillies was Lex Tillotson's who had a big factory type thing opposite the Bull and Butcher. A field next to the site was used as a football pitch for the local kids and on occasion the older kids built fires and for some reason not obvious to my young self (or now) used to run over it. I suspect it was a group that later became the Rosehill Riot Squad. I was never sure who they were to be honest just saw the graffiti.

On occasion we played with with the Docherties. Jimmy Robson took us to games later in his career. You could bump into Alan Stevenson in the Thomson Centre and the likes of Leighton James used to visit Burnley Boys Club on the the other side of town. Later Peter Noble had an outlet in the market. The club was ingrained in the town and the players were part of the town,

I think I'm 6 years younger than you so we must have moved up there as the new estate opened and there was loads of kids my age. I guess because a lot of young families moved at the same time. Rosehill was a great place to grow up and although the memories are fading many are much more vivid than much more recent times..

Not just Tillies field up that way. We used to circulate around the Bullfields, behind Rossy Road, Oakeneaves. Even tried playing on the escape road for lorries off Manchester Rd.

First i can remember was ASDA...Colne i think. 1960's
Can't remember exactly where it was/is though.
It changed the way people shop & was the end of an era for a lot of small shops.

Mo and Vintage, you obviously left Moneysave because Duncan thought you were poor. Sammy had the ultimate say and you were replaced by more quality like JG, Big Redrose, Shakey etc. You sound like Tresor following the cash!!!

My Dad was manager of Taskers in Brierfield from when it opened about 1964. He retired about 1979/80ish and they closed it not long after. I used to work there in the late 60s after school, stacking shelves :D
