The Independent says the whole incident lasted 82 seconds, and in that time two plain clothes shot the attacker:

As usual we have people on here who sit in their chairs and make judgements on situations it's difficult to appreciate and which most of us have absolutely no experience of.

Odd how all the guys on here who just know they'd have tackled a knife wielding terrorist intent on murder while unarmed seem fairly terrified of everything else in the world.

Not all situations are black and white (excuse the pun) and anyway I'd rather be a living coward than a dead hero. If the odds are against you then you pull back. That's what the army does in war!
I think he showed remarkable intelligence and calmness in the situation. He had the two other people in the car that were not police officers so in the circumstances he did the right thing I think but It all happened so fast so it's not really fair to criticise.

Regardless of anybodies views he is a trained police officer paid to uphold the law and defeat criminality. He locked himself in the car and watched events unfold.

Maybe we have just become accustomed to 5'1 female teaching assistants fighting off assault rifle shooting maniacs in schools and thinking highly trained police officers would act similar?

The odds were hardly against him in the act of a distraction or landing some kind of blow from behind anything to get him off guy . If the guy above thinks the army would retreat when only yards away their colleague is in mortal danger with better than average odds of a distraction... beggars belief .Though your argument as such is sensible if the odds were say 4 knife weilding Guys against 1 unarmed person perhaps
