We can't become sustainable in the Championship, we need PL football.
We will only get premier League footballers when we are earning premier League money.

We like all other sensibly run clubs at this level have to cut the cloth accordingly or finish up like Derby and Bolton

Yes the reality of relegation doesn't appear to have registered with some supporters yet, cost cutting was bound to occur now we'll be playing in the Championship, and the resultant drops in revenue that means. The parachute payments will help slightly, but we still needed to reduce our wage bill significantly, which thankfully we're undertaking as well as bringing in replacements for those who've left the building.

It's simple for me if any of our PL squad don't wish to stay, then ship them out ASAP, naturally getting as much as possible for them.

We only want players who are totally committed to the project.

The direction we're now going in under VK/AP feels right to me as if it works then over time we'll have all the right conditions in place for longer term sustainability whilst also being competitive. Whether it produces immediate results or not, and ultimately promotion in a year or two (or relegation), remains to be seen, but I can see VK putting together a well organised team with a clear plan
In recent months I've been more involved in the business of sport, so I now address this question differently to how I would have previously.

I am frankly enthralled to see the pace (no pun intended) of the new business model being laid out in front of us. In some ways that Sean was failing has helped Pace to perhaps get there more quickly, by forcing him to act. We are seeing a squad develop that has its basis in two drivers
- off-field monetization of individual players
- achieved via on-field collective success
and it will become a production line, which can only be good for the Academy too.

This model is what it should have become once Jimmy Hill got the wage cap abolished. Burnley, as a small-town club, could never have longevity at the top level purely in footballing terms.

The financial aspect of this is interesting.... obviously many of us are ultra-concerned as to the leveraging of assets already within the club, but in reality Garlick had spent a couple of years trying to sell, and it wasn't working.

If the revenue model works, it will automatically address the debt and, by definition will mean on-field success too. "If" is a big word, but I am optimistic now that the club is in the rapid process of reinventing itself

We can be sustainable in the Championship, as many clubs like ours are, but it would be preferable to be targeting being sustainable in the Prem in the not too distant future.

There's an enormous black hole that needs filling with dwindling income. We have owners without the money to cover any kind of losses. We desperately need PL football for financial reasons.

Parachute payments fill the black hole

Do they hell lol Parachute payments of £40m year 1 will probably just about cover the wage bill. That incoming figure only goes down after year 1.

any danger we can have a thread not debate the same old financial stuff yet again

On the footy side, the first few games of the season will tell us quite a bit

Yes trips to Huddersfield and Watford are about as tough as we could expect in the Championship, so it might not be a smooth start to the season, especially if we're still in the process of bedding in a new team.

I see a lot of Burnley fans on social media (and this forum) making really positive forecasts re the new season. That’s not a bad thing but I can’t see much evidence for this positivity.

Is there not a danger that having such high hopes they might quickly turn to disappointment and then anger? Will this forum become a list of threads attacking owner, manager and individual players?
It’s been quite a while since the heady days of UEFA qualification and that got all the clarets bloods pumping.
Time takes its toll, lack of transfer investment etc and we are now where we are.
Now… new bloods… talented new bloods… young bloods… a manager who has played at the highest levels of euro football for years… what is there not to get excited about?
I personally think without any disillusionment that we will we start Aug 2023 in the Premier League.
Keep the faith…and think optimistic not pessimistic.
Northern Soul as they say…

I’m always optimistic, however I am reading so manyBurnley fans OTT expectations but with hardly any evidence. That’s why I asked the question. The trouble is with expectations running so high, a few poor results will see the same fans turn to huge disappointment and anger.
