Re: Chris Wood
A bit like with Eddie Howe on here, he's one of those that gets some people really irate but I can only just summon the interest to post that he was pretty good for a bit, then fizzled out at the end. Honestly can't see any more to it than that.

Re: Chris Wood
Until Tellas hat trick last week, I think Wood was the last Burnley player to score a hat trick and in the premier league against Wolves. I think Newcastle bought him to help relegate us and help them avoid it.

Re: Chris Wood
the "hit double figures four seasons running" is a stat that requires context. As has been said, if you build a team around that individual who is a frontline striker then you'd better be hitting double figures. Secondly, it's also contextual as to the percentage contribution to the number of goals. The larger the percentage of the total the more it makes it look "ordinary," because, in effect, the wider spread of goals being sacrificed in a team built towards that individual dictates that he'd better score goals.
The debate not being had on here is why wasn't it more?

Re: Chris Wood
That's a cert ....without Wood as useless as he was towards the end we where never going to stay in that division .... Newcastle paid over the odds to relegate us.

Way too much dumped teenage syndrome on here with regards Chris Wood
Re: Chris Wood
It seemed that Man City had to adjust their game to ccommodate Haaland and when he's not been firing they haven't always won. Their play involved a nmebr of goals scorers. Of couse Pep being a top coach will have that sorted. Your right we didn't have sufficient gaols from other sources. thats why I like Cornet, he could fire them in - when he wasn't injured.NRC wrote: ↑Fri Feb 17, 2023 2:50 pmthe "hit double figures four seasons running" is a stat that requires context. I was furious with the ‘comfort zone’ interview after he left, but hindsight is a wonderful thing and it looks like the whole club was in the comfort zone last season.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 17, 2023 2:52 pmWay too much dumped teenage syndrome on here with regards Chris Wood

Can you really blame people for being completely fed up nobody really believed in the project towards the end of SD tenure.FeedTheArf wrote: ↑Fri Feb 17, 2023 5:46 pmI was furious with the ‘comfort zone’ interview after he left, but hindsight is a wonderful thing and it looks like the whole club was in the comfort zone last season.

Re: Chris Wood
He had 1 goal in 3 games over 4 seasons in the PL, which is better than Marcus Rashford.NRC wrote: ↑Fri Feb 17, 2023 2:50 pmthe "hit double figures four seasons running" is a stat that requires context. He played in a 4-4-2 so the team wasn't built around him and the team often had 40 per cent possession or less.
But logically I like the idea that the more goals you score the worse goal scorer you are because it means you've taken goals off other people who would have scored more goals is pretty good.
Nichola Sturgeon would have been proud of that thought process.

Re: Chris Wood
The team was built around Wood when we had Brady and JBG fit, firing and creating chances, and I don't remember people criticising him then. He suffered more than most from them being unable to stay fit and not be replaced/upgraded.
For me what lessened his effectiveness was our later tactics of using him as a battering-ram/head on a stick/delete as applicable or having him chase Westwood's nonsense no-look garbage down the channels, which seemed almost perversely designed to get as little out of him as possible. Going straight from 20/21 to the Tokyo Olympics to the 21/22 season didn't help either and for a lot of that season he looked absolutely shattered.
As for the 'comfort zone' comment that's boiled so much **** on here... we'll he's right, isn't he? In the absence of any meaningful contributions from Barnes or Rodriguez from 20/21 onwards, if Wood was fit or even within shouting distance of it he played. You can try and push yourself as much as you want but he was under virtually no pressure for his place.
Good player, tailed off from 2020 onwards. Far from the only player in that squad to do that and he wasn't any worse last season than most of the others.

Mainly this...maybe McNeil was more the provider than Brady in all honesty, unless I'm suffering false memory syndrome.
VK probably shared enola's view on Westwood's contribution...little more than brainless optimism.
