On a similar subject, who knows on here what a Torpedo is, I was in a bakery in Colne today and a old dear asked the young girl behind the counter for a Torpedo and her face was a picture, I had to point one out for her

A northern pastie style thing isn't it but shaped like a torpedo ?

Aside from Vanilla's and Torpedoes another childhood favourite was the humble but delicious Cookie. A simple bun with artificial cream and jam dolloped into a cut in the bun. They were 3d.

Surely a 'custard in a pastry cup' is a custard tart (and I'm not trying to move this thread into deviancy a la 'side slice' - which I'd never heard of either).

On eating a custard slice I did try it and it works! I have to say it didn't feel right though. Who buys a cake and then eats it sideways. I think the fault is in the displaying of the cake. If they were displayed on their side I would feel better about eating it this way. Perhaps when I put them on a plate that's what I'll do.

Those triangles on the bottom right, I wonder if they are 'Apple Danish' - a mixture of apple and custard in Danish pastry with fondant icing. They are my all-time favourite cake. We had a shop where I live in Potters Bar, Herts. that made these. I liked them so much my mother made a valiant attempt at making some. They were quite good but she said she wouldn't do them again as they were a lot of work. Unfortunately the shop went years ago and I've never seen them since.

I almost approve of the custard doughnuts, but not with chocolate on them and hopefully no jam either.

I love a torpedo. Haven't had one for years. I was in a bakery in Colne today too but bought currant teacakes to bring back to Scotland. Sorry I can't add anything to the vanilla/custard slice debate as I can't stand them. I hate cold custard. Mr M (Scottish) says he doesn't know if there's any difference between them. He loves cold custard.
