I understand that, but surely you have a whole year to be dealing with that and lining the next one up?
In the context of Norwich & Watfords release dates, 2-3 weeks later (assuming they release this week, that is), perhaps isn’t too bad under the circumstances but that just illustrates why we need to be signing sponsors on multi-year deals like them. Or just getting the next one organised in good time if that’s not our strategy.
Im not a contract expert but what I experience in my world (not football sponsorship) is that legal agreements between 2 commercial entities can take time to get across the line.
The work on the contracts probably would take place well in advance - agree a broad intent to do business and then as discussion progress you start to define the scope and detail of the agreements/commercials etc. Its not just about money but there will be clauses in there about protecting reputation and non payment of agreed sums etc and what happens.
I can't imagine that the club would go to the expense of writing up several contracts trying to account for all events. They will start this when they know where they are playing the following season. Now if you are mathematically safe in Feb for example, then it gives confidence that things can start sooner but you may face the 'what if we go up' question then and we may want to look for different sponsors as the current one isn't able to meet the increase in costs to do this.
As I say I can imagine its not a simple thing to do and there will be lots of considerations to why things don't get done sooner.
The other relegated clubs have had the kits on order since end of June/start of July and they had the benefit of an existing relationship and contract that probably was easier to amend/revise in the main.
I would imagine the club will have a media day to arrange where they will be getting their photos in kits done etc. It will be after this where they can then advertise the kits and start selling them I would imagine.
I can only imagine that media day is probably likely to take place in the next week and then time for editing and all marketing to be done before putting live.
