Unbelievable how so many are writing off Shelvey. He played yesterday in a team that was largely below par, and had no decent fullbacks as an outlet. Against Sheff Wed in just a brief appearance he delivered two tremendous long passes to Foster giving the striker the excellent chance of scoring twice. Bigger worries for me are the inadequacies of Pires and Sonne as back ups and the pace of Worral should we get injuries
There are no grey areas on here warks, it is all horrific or sunshine and light week to week. And that's both collectively and for a lot of individual players.
I've never known a season where this board has been so wildly reactive.

The main issue is the system and the personnel within that. Shelvey (to an extent) and particularly Sarmiento were impressive at Southampton when we played 3 at the back. The issue yesterday is none of the 3 midfielders were arguably playing in either a system that suited them or their favoured part of the midfield 3. Brownhill and Shelvey were both anonymous and Sarmiento was like a dog chasing a balloon.
The key player missing is Humphreys who was excellent in a back 3 at Southampton and we are really going to miss him. Sonne is clearly not good enough.

And to think most on here were wanting him in replacement of Laurent. Let's leave it to those who see the players day in day out, shall we...

We only need 2/3 games where he makes the difference between a point or 3… but he can’t cost us…

Perhaps he showed for the ball looked for the pass didn’t play it cos it wasn’t on so got caught on the ball perhaps he then tried to step past a man but got caught on the ball perhaps he then hit the balls into spaces where players should be attacking but weren’t and to players that should be able to receive and use a ball but can’t perhaps he was played in the wrong position with the wrong players around and in front of him perhaps playing to a negative inferior system than he’s perhaps hasn’t been used to
We'll find out.

Admittedly the performance yesterday was hopeless but to put Shelvey's inept performance down to both full backs is plainly wrong. Whether there were 'outlets' or not Shelvey was not going to find them or exploit them. I don't know what level of football he enjoyed in Turkey( did he play that much?) but Championship football here is beyond him. Someone compared his efforts yesterday to Gazza's infamous one at Bramall Lane over 20 years ago. The game moves on, if not always for the better but certainly faster. Faster than he can think or move.

Shelvey was awful yesterday but so were Brownhill and Laurent when he came on. I think that I gave them all 4s on the ratings but I could have easily given them all 3s.
To have a thread singling him out is unfair but standard for this messageboard.
I gave Sarmiento a 5 but the score was only that high because of his last 10 minutes on the pitch when he seemed to be our most threatening player. If it had been based on the previous 50 or 60 minutes he would also have been deserving of a 3 or 4.

Why are you bringing Laurent into a thread that is mainly overly critical of Shelvey?
Did Shelvey look disinterested? Yes.
Did Shelvey look unfit? Yes.
Laurent was on for over a third of the game?
Did Laurent make any surging runs forward? I can't remember any.
Did our performance improve with Laurent on the pitch? No.
It's a bit ott to have a go at Shelvey when the whole team were terrible.

It didn't make much of a difference when we had them 3 before we still didn't beat them although it was a closer contest.

Hopefully his performance on Saturday puts an end to that moronic song.
Best example on Saturday , young lads on the row in front spent about half n hour hammering Shelvey including shouting to "get him off the pitch" then when he was subbed started singing it as he left the pitch at snails pace.
