Some things in life are predictable. Germany winning this game in the dying seconds is one of those.

Terrible goalkeeping. Stood behind his two man wall and still made a movement to the right.

Re: World cup thread
The player that needlessly tripped the German should be banished!
Had their chances. Can still do it by beating Mexico reserves!

Quite common for teams to rotate in final group game once qualified.Imploding Turtle wrote:Why would Mexico play their reserves?

Re: World cup thread
When two teams have the same points, first the goal difference across their three group matches will be used and, if still tied, the number of goals scored will be taken into account. The head-to-head result only comes into play after that.IanMcL wrote:1. Already qualified.

So, a decent sweden win and a germany win knocks mexico out, no?

Re: World cup thread
Yep, they've not qualified yet. Tie break criteria is goal diff, then goals scored. If those are all equal then it will be head to head. But if the other two are equal then head to head won't solve anything. Because the three of them will have beat each other. So then it'd go to goal difference between the teams concerned (so excluding their South Korea games)

Re: World cup thread
So - hang on. If Sweden and Germany both win 1-0, then all three have scored 3, against 2, GD 1 - so Mexico go through because they beat Germany, Germany go through because they beat Sweden and Sweden go through because they beat Mexico....what then?

Goal difference in the matches involving only those teams.duncandisorderly wrote:So - hang on. Re: World cup thread
So in that scenario:
Mexico (1-0, 0-1) GD 0 Scored 1
Sweden (1-2, 1-0) GD 0 Scored 2
Germany (0-1, 2-1) GD 0 Scored 2
Mexico out on goals scored?
Mexico (1-0, 0-1) GD 0 Scored 1
Sweden (1-2, 1-0) GD 0 Scored 2
Germany (0-1, 2-1) GD 0 Scored 2
Mexico out on goals scored?

Re: World cup thread
Then goals scored in matched between those teams. Then if it's all still level it'll go to the Fair Play system
Re: World cup thread
They seem to change the rules so often. I thought - mistakenly - that if two teams had the same number of points then they would be separated on the basis of the head-to-head result. But that isn't the case as stated by FactualFrank.
Didn't they go with the head-to-head result first before?

Re: World cup thread
The ITV studio is illusionary. One minute it looks as if they have the best spot in the stadium and the next, they’re overlooking the Kremlin. A motorbike driving noisily past at half time has given the game away. They are actually in a small hut by the side of a motorway.

Head-to-head is rubbish. It should always be goal difference first.ecc wrote:They seem to change the rules so often. Re: World cup thread
Heh - so, Korea beat Germany 1-0, Mexico beat Sweden 1-0, all three teams on -1 GD with same goals scored and against - then Germany go through again in 2nd by scoring one more than Sweden.
In a weird turn up, Germany are actually more likely to go through now than Mexico. Ish...

Not about the 'more chance than mexico' thing, but I'm fairly sure on the others
Korea beat Germany 1-0
Mexico beat Sweden 1-0
That leaves the head to heads like this;
Korea 1-0 and 0-1 GD 0, GF 1
Sweden 1-0 and 1-2 GD 0, GF 2
Germany 2-1 and 0-1 GD 0, GF 2
Germany through on head to head vs Sweden, no?
Sorry - wrong about the method, not goals scored but head to head.

Re: World cup thread
Germany are the most likely to go through, as they will beat Korea by a convincing score. Sweden need to beat Mexico by a good score to go through, which is unlikely.

Re: World cup thread
If Sweden beat Mexico 1-0 and Germany beat Korea by more than 1, then Sweden will go through in 2nd behind Germany based on their head to head record with Mexico. Imagine being a citizen of a country that massacred thousands of innocent people and then getting upset because one of the ones they didn't get around to killing did a football celebration.Kokeza also criticised the 'double eagle' celebration given by Switzerland's two ethnic Albanian goalscorers during Friday's match, describing the actions as "scandalous and shameful".
