This is the World Cup thread. We don’t need an extra xenophobic England v Panama thread.

England should win but who knows on the day, I just hope the ref clamps down on some of these obvious fouls that have been ignored in the tournament so far.

Re: World cup thread
Appalling defending by Panama in that half and duly punished by England...at last a referee who deals accordingly with the rank bad assaults by the Panama players.

A cracking performance by England and the ref with England running out deservedly 6-1.South West Claret. wrote:England should win but who knows on the day, I just hope the ref clamps down on some of these obvious fouls that have been ignored in the tournament so far.

Next up Sénégal v Japan 4 pm. I was very impressed with Sénégal in their first game so let’s see if they are as good today.

1-1 ht Senegal on top but Japan came back well so still all to play for second half.
Re: World cup thread
Decent game this, two competitive teams.
Re: World cup thread
Ha ha ha. Senegal defending was comical there! 2-2

I’d fancy England to advance to the last 8 seeing as we’re likely to be playing either of Japan or Senegal in last 16

Re: World cup thread
A game of two half’s with Japan showing real tenacity in the second half 2-2 probably a fair result.

Re: World cup thread
That's why I said before the World Cup started, I fancied us to at least make the Quarters. But it'll get more difficult then - likely to be Germany or Brazil, I think.wilks_bfc wrote:I’d fancy England to advance to the last 8 seeing as we’re likely to be playing either of Japan or Senegal in last 16
Re: World cup thread
Anything from the quarter finals onwards is always going to be very difficult with all the usual suspects, minus Italy there.

Doesn't who we play in the quarters (if we get there) depend on whether we finish first or second in the group, Frank?FactualFrank wrote:.... likely to be Germany or Brazil, I think.
Edit....just said on ITV if we came second, we'd probably play Mexico. Who are also playing well.

Yeah.ElectroClaret wrote:just said on ITV if we came second, we'd probably play Mexico. Who are also playing well.
If we finish 2nd, then we'll play match 56 - last 16 game vs winner of Group H.
Get through that to the QF and we'd play the winner of Group F winner vs Group E runner-up - That's currently Mexico vs Switzerland.
Now, if we finish top of the group, then we'll be playing in match 54 in the last 16. Get through that and we'll play the winner of Group E winner vs Group F runner-up - that's currently Brazil vs Germany.
I know who I'd rather face between Brazil, Germany and Mexico... Mexico. I think somebody commented yesterday, that finishing 2nd could actually be better.

Columbia really went for it from the start and got their reward with a well taken header. 1-0 ht.
Looking forward to the second half.

Probably the best alround 95 minute performance by anyone from Columbia tonight especially as Poland were seeded 8th in the world.

Re: World cup thread
A few of my former work colleagues from Poland are in Russia.
They live and breath football and watch as many games as they can with several having been to watch us more than once and most having been to every Premier League ground and most of the Championship.
I am gutted they have spent their holiday money watching a team that has not bothered to turn up for their fans.

Re: World cup thread
By the time England play Belgium we’ll already know wh are oppononents will he should we get through the first knockout game. If it is (as some suggest) a path of death with France, Germany, Portugal, Uruguay and Brazil; then we could have a situation in which both England and Belgium would prefer not to top the group. Could be an interesting game.
Re: World cup thread
The way it stands England and Belgium could draw (so neither side loses momentum) and the team with the worst disciplinary record would go through second which could be an easier route.
We may see Pope come on upfront in the 90th minute with instructions to get sent off ...

Re: World cup thread
John stones with more goals than Messi. Who'd have thought that!
Re: World cup thread
Saw the first-half of the late match last night. I would have liked to have seen it all because the first 45 minutes were very good. I couldn't work out the Poland Manager's formation. Just Lewandowski up top. In the three final phases he's played (Euros in 2012 and 2016 plus this WC) he's scored twice in eight matches. He bags goals for fun in the qualifiers but just doesn't look a threat in the serious stage. He's obviously a very good striker but he also obviously needs more support.
Columbia played great football and the first goal was just a matter of time.

Rather than worrying about the quarters I would suggest that we prioritise trying to avoid Colombia in the second round.

Got to beat the best to win it all, so bring on whoever it will be.
Re: World cup thread
We should go and snap up Juan Quintero, like right now before anyone else goes sniffing, I saw him play at the U20 World Cup in around 2014, he was supposedly the next big thing in World football but it hasn't quite worked for him at Porto, loaned out constantly and given little opportunity, that freekick he scored against Japan was excellent and he was great again last night.

Putin will be in the dressing room at HT with a bunch of one-way tickets to Siberia.
Re: World cup thread
Russia unlucky in some ways. Two really soft yellows and wicked deflection.

What nutty defending from Russia, the Uruguayans could score when they like so zero chance of Russia getting much out of this game.Claret wrote:Correct. 2-0 down with only 10 men.

Re: World cup thread
That “attempt” by the Uruguayan to win a penalty was pathetic and he should be booked or dealt with retrospectively.how many more pathetic, cheating, feigning, overpaid so called sportsmen do we have to watch?
It’s the one thing that really gets me mad when watching footy.
DEAL WITH IT FIFA, UEFA, THE FA, REFEREES, MANAGERS, FOOTBALLERS.

Uruguay 3-0 winners Russia just huffed and puffed but to no end result.
Agree claret the refereeing letting far far to much go in this WC.

Is a deflection anything other than `wicked' when it ends up in the net?Claret wrote:Russia unlucky in some ways. Two really soft yellows and wicked deflection.
Re: World cup thread
There have been good refs and bad refs. The bad ones either let too much go (play acting, etc) or they are very petty, blowing up for absolutely nothing at all. You can bet that if any of these “nothing at all” incidents had happened in the penalty area they would all have been waved away by the same refereesSouth West Claret. wrote:Uruguay 3-0 winners Russia just huffed and puffed but to no end result.

Uruguay - dark horses. Lump on.
Re: World cup thread
Egypt were hyped up big time by the media prior to the tournament and they've shown why with three straight defeats including the uncanny feat of losing to Saudi Arabia.
Re: World cup thread
Iran playing well and causing Portugal a few problems.
