Like him or not Shelvey has some range of passing and some shot on him.

Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
Whilst not enthused by the thought of JJS signing he has the ability to make the killer pass/through ball for the forwards to run on to which we don`t seem to have anyone looking to do at the moment and if Foster is going to be our main man upfront going forward then IMO he`s at his best when running onto the ball than playing with his back to goal so maybe it might work out if this is what SP might have in mind, my concern is who would he be replacing ?

Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
Shelvey is a very good player....if you dont realise that then you dont know sh1t about football or your expectations are ludicrously high. At his best he's a level above anything in our squad.
So he's been benchwarming in Outer Mongolia or wherever.. that's not made him a bad player overnight..and if he's in any way unfit then you can be sure he won't be coming.
The muppets talking him down are probably the same as those who've slagged nearly every incoming since, and including Ings.
Hope this happens....it's a big piece of the jigsaw.
Oh..and suggestions that he's replacing Brownhill aren't worth reading...entirely different type of player.

Assuming nobody left and if he was to start any games, I'd think Laurent.
Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
Always liked Shelvey. If he's fit enough he's miles better technically than any of our current midfielders.

AP has already said we won’t be spending big this window. If Shelvey comes in I’d expect Brownhill to leave. Cash now, zilch in Summer could be telling.

Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
JJ Shelvey is a top class player.
We need creativity in the midfield to open up defences.
All those obsessed with his age need to realise its these types of signings, Barnes, Shelvey et al, will take us up.
To sign a young player with Shelvey attributes will be out of our range.
We are a very young team, but the blend of youth and experience is key to keep our nerve in the weeks and months to come.
A Shelvey type, is something we have been missing.

Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
From a Turkish fan discussion on X (today) :
“Football had left Shelvey. He had spent the summer on vacation. Coach Arda played him for 5 minutes but couldn't stand it. He can't take more than 3 steps with the ball. His private life is far from that of the average athlete. We got rid of him in the quarter season. I don't want him to be a trouble to anyone in Turkey”

Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
We dont have a player who can consistently hit a great corner since Westwood & McNeil left. We have no one trusted to put a deadly cross in from a free kick. We have no one who can bend a ball round or over a wall from a free kick near the opposition goal (I thought we had with Fleming but he is no longer involved with these and not been asked to in two games now). We have no midfielder who plays with an urgency to move the ball forward quickly, and its rare one of our midfielders can generate from defence to attack with a killer ball. I dont know if Shelvey is match fit, but my memory of him is he could do all these things. I have heard of worse suggestions. Move on Tresor and use his wage on someone like JJS

Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
I've always thought Shelvey was a really good player but a bit like Billing who I've also admired (and has been mentioned in places elsewhere on this thread) I feel his boat has maybe sailed. I obviously hope I'm wrong and I'm surprised he's only 32 tbf, but he's been mucking around in Turkey and I'm not sure he's what we need. Maybe a last 10 minutes player like Egan, but I can't see him starting.

Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
JJS is not even staring in a Turkish team that plays at a ground with a capacity of 2500! Padiham is bigger.
Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
Plenty of people had written Chris Wood off as past his prime at 32.

So far, it’s looking like the window of a club with little in the way of available funds.
If there is any truth in him focusing more on his off field activities than those on it, it feels like a bit of a gamble. Hopefully we’ve done plenty of due diligence!
I do think we need some real quality to give us the best chance of an automatic place, and probably in two further positions (unlikely).

Often to the opposite. Good player and he's doing brilliantly for us. But he's not in the team to be good with the ball. That's Cullen's job.

Shelvey is an absolutely insane signing.
He’s way way too good for this league. Best player in this league and we haven’t even had to pay a fee.

We do need quality in wide areas but whilst the squad is at the size it is, we need 2 defenders and Tresor to leave before making the quality signingsDCWat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 6:51 pmSo far, it’s looking like the window of a club with little in the way of available funds.

If Shelvey is 50% the player he was id be very happy to offer him a short term contract.

Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
You see how the midfield 3 works now, it would be silly to change it , so if he’s an option for the bench then brilliant, add hannibal in and/or play him from the left and we look strong . Add to that this could be a shrewd signing which costs little and frees more cash up for a wide player
Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
He was a very good player 5-6 years ago, he wouldn’t be struggling for game time in Turkey if he was the same player.fatboy47 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 5:10 pmShelvey is a very good player....if you dont realise that then you dont know sh1t about football or your expectations are ludicrously high. Let’s give him a chance at least. Most older players we have signed over the years will have been written off before they have kicked a ball.
