Hilarious that I’m being called pedantic for holding a minority view on a very marginal refereeing decision. Particularly when the laws of the game and the professionals employed to administer those laws all back up my side of the argument.

It was probably a red card in the modern day football where everything is a foul, it's incredibly soft but that is football in 2021. unfortunately

It's about interpretation and application of the laws of the game, not understanding or lack of. It's not hard to see how so many people think Oliver got it wrong. Refs regularly get things wrong.

Because that’s not what the VAR is for. If referees started erring on the side of caution and not giving decisions so that they can be verified by the VAR then they would be rightly criticised. The VAR is there to correct clear and obvious errors which this wasn’t. Likewise if Oliver had booked the Swiss player then I’m pretty sure the VAR wouldn’t have intervened as the decision was a marginal call.

Fair enough, and you are correct. I just think that given the 50/50 call and the quarter finalness that the ref could have used that safety net and stood by his decision or change his mind to issue a red.

Exactly this which is why Oliver is a complete knob - quarter final of a major championship, probably the only time the lad will ever get to one and he uses no common sense or decency whatsoever

I agree Rilybobs, it was a red for me too, it was reckless. However had it been given as a yellow, I don’t think I’d be calling for a red, I hope you know what I mean

ridiculous because it's never ever worthy of a red card. Not arguing the toss over it (agree to disagree sir

It’s nothing to do with the laws. It’s everything to do with

1 Oliver getting it wrong
2 Kavanagh not prepared to challenge it

Can you or Riley actually tell us why you think it's a red? I certainly didn't see it as reckless, watch the replay back and it's clear the player has control (as he moves his feet at the end of the challenge to connect with the ball) and it certainly wasn't a lunge or even aimed at a player.

If you have both feet off the ground you aren’t in control and therefore it’s reckless. I wouldn’t have complained at a yellow though
