Which has also just recruited arguably the best left back outside the premier league?
With previous form of recruiting the next up and coming centre half , that went on to play for England which in turn means That has just been sold for a fee that could

Three (including this season) out of the last four spent in the Premier league suggests that our recruitment team are far better than most clubs in football, especially when you look at who has been relegated or which teams are struggling to get back up, whilst we spend less in comparison.
Our successes far outweigh any failures we've had. No club is perfect, yet we are closer than most, if not all.

Re: Britt Assombalonga
I've absolutely no criticism of the signings we've made in the Dyche era, because the vast majority of it has worked out well, but since that first summer and the second winter window when we identified and signed Heaton, Jones, Arfield and Barnes for next to nothing, I think it is fair to say our business has generally tended towards the obvious. The signings we've made (including Michael Keane) might very well have been heavily featured on messageboard threads in which posters have suggested potential targets - indeed the only players I can think of that we've signed who haven't been suggested in that fashion are Hemmings and Ulvestad. Assombalonga is another example of that trend.
That does suggest that our recruitment team isn't particularly creative or imaginative, although of course there have been plenty of mitigating factors. Given that we seem to struggle (not unreasonably) with some of the fees quoted for Championship players, it does seem about time that our recruitment became a bit broader based.

Spice - it could be that our recruitment team also post on this message board discretely to garner a feel for public opinion before proceeding to their targets, after all they have to keep the fans happy...

Re: Britt Assombalonga
Partly that, but partly actually our scouting of the lower leagues, too. Apart from Darikwa, who we signed after a pre-season friendly against Chesterfield in which he impressed lots of people, I can't think of an example of us taking a player from the bottom couple of divisions and making something of him in the Dyche era, with the exception of the limited period when McParland was involved and (I think) we signed the likes of Agyei. These players don't necessarily have to have immediate impact, but they're the rough diamonds who come through over a couple of years - like Harry Maguire did at Hull, for example.ExistentialWanderer wrote:In short. I'd argue Spice and of most posters on here I hold your opinion in quite high regard. I am sure, with the finances and set up we have at our disposal our lower league 'eyes' so to speak is probably quite good. Not suggesting good enough but we certainly can build on that here and abroad. I think people need to realise we need to learn to walk again before we can run. It's been a long time since this club even started to walk again. Baby steps bud, but I do understand your view.claretspice wrote:Partly that, but partly actually our scouting of the lower leagues, too. Re: Britt Assombalonga
Hopefully our Academy Status will improve standards and as you say. In time, we'll find that next Clucas and Maguire. It says heaps about how delapidated we let it get that Hull stole a march on us. TBH I think Forest Green Rovers could have the way we were. Onwards and upwards.claretspice wrote:Don't disagree with any of that (except perhaps apart from my views being held in high regard). It is an evolution and certainly a couple of years ago the emphasis had to be on spending our resources on players who would hit the ground immediately. But, for example, Hull have lifted both Clucas and Maguire from League 1 in the last 3 years and will make £30 million from them this summer. Maguire might have been before we got rich, but Clucas wasn't and I'd like to see us begin to add depth in certain positions by pinching those sosrts of players.
