Root is probably the best batsman in the world now.

Tough for them both having to restart having both got into the 70s but 60 added in 50 minutes. Superb stuff.

I don't think there's any question Root is the best batsman in world cricket, and what is noticeable is he is now converting virtually every time he passes 50, something which he wasn't doing a couple of years ago.

Kohli, Williamson and Smith are all struggling a bit recently while Root goes from strength to strength. Think he's undoubtedly the best batsman in the world at the moment.

Root was on 83 when Bairstow scored his last run, he’s now on 113. We’ve scored 66 runs in the first hour though.

Carnage this morning I thought it might still be tricky with 120 needed, but this pair are cruising home.

Changing the ball again, I don't know why they bother, England just hit it to the boundary anyway.

What a player.

Making this record chase look like he's playing with the kids in back garden.

What a partnership between the world’s best and a player in the form of his life.

Superb to watch.

268 partnership in 52 overs

Over 5 runs an over for that period is unreal, also eliminates the prospect of the new ball and still needing another 100

How this team has gone from losing the Ashes 4.9-0 to chasing down 378. Absolutely phenomenal.

Incredible viewing
If India had not scuttled back home for their beloved Indian Premier League then they would have won this Test against our previous side.
KARMA and a pity there isn’t another Test to get a series victory.

How you feeling Virat…

Root best in the world and Bairstow the best form, Shame we can’t play the Aussies next week, granted they’re a much better side than India but it would certainly not be 5v0

That was simply incredible. It’s just surreal to believe this is pretty much the same personnel (on the pitch) that were out in West Indies and Australia over the winter.

It just shows the power of mentality, if you look around the dressing room and believe in the players that’s what winners like Stokes does to those around them.
I was one who was unsure of how it would effect him, he’s taken a back seat so far, the future looks bright

Huge credit to Brendan McCullum & Ben Stokes for changing the whole mindset of this team. Was it the first test against New Zealand when I thought Bairstow & Stokes had lost the plot with their approach? Just been unbelievable to watch this summer.

In all of this summer’s tests so far this team has shown what I call an “Australian Mentality “, which is a will to win, whoever the opposition is. It’s a “we don’t care who the opposition is, we are going to do it and win it our way”. This due to the change of captaincy, even Joe Root just said “it just shows what can be done if you have someone in charge who knows what he’s doing”, which he said jokingly but I think he feels better now with that load off his shoulders.
Well done to Stokes and his team.

Root up to 10,458 Test match runs now. You wouldn’t bet against him getting past 11,000 this year the way he’s going.

England this year are the only Test team in history to chase down over 250 four times in a year.

But as an Indian fan on social media pointed out. England's bowling attack have got the 20 wickets required to win games in the last 4 matches.

Very valid point. The batters are rightfully being lauded but if you don't take 20 wickets, you're unlikely to win the game, regardless of the amount of runs you score.

“ "I haven't give too much thought to how England are playing cricket, but if we're executing our cricket and ticking all the boxes then we would have been in a very good space. But whatever works for England, good for them. If that is a sustainable way, that is for them to work out.”

As close to a compliment as you’ll get from India 😂

This England team simply don't know when they're beaten, in all 4 tests so far this summer, England had their backs to the wall several times, but they responded in the best possible manner.

And now sides will be thinking what on earth can we set them that'll be enough, 378 certainly wasn't for India, and England cantered home with aplomb.

Staying in a hotel near Birmingham for today's and tomorrow's match. Fantastic day of cricket, superb and friendly atmosphere, can't wait to be there again on Tuesday morning.
A little update: was back at Edgbaston for 2nd day of cricket. Monday's will stay long in the memory and the record books, too, probably. Today was great too, for the dominant batting display, the two centuries completed and of course the result. Looking forward to seeing the highlights shortly and a closer look at some of those shots.

It would be good to see Root or Bairstow win the Sports Personality of the year. Or share it? Just superb stuff from these two.
