When I spotted someone had posted today on this thread I thought it might be good news that the cart horse had been sold.

Wout weghorst

Post by Hurstwood_Claret » Fri Jun 23, 2023 6:40 pm

I was seeing on social media that he may come back to Burnley. If that happens, what would everyone’s opinions be on him? Rejection or embrace?

If no other club wants him he (and we) have no choice.

If VK wants him and can get a tune out of the Dutch international that's good enough for me. If not, ship him out. Simple as that really.

It’s a weird one this. If he hadn’t played the 20 games for us already, and we were signing him afresh, I think I’d be quite excited.

I think it’s there’s truth in our bid for Flemming from Millwall, and there’s every reason to believe there is given the source, Weghorst won’t have a role in the team.

Best for everyone if he moves on, if anyone will take him.

That might well be the best option if nobody wants him.

Remove his wage and the potential for squad disruption.

I'm not sure how he would fit with the remaining players from our relegated squad.

Desirable for many teams in Europe. He’s proven in German and Turkish Leagues. Don’t get this notion that no team would want him. He’s just not up to the PL. He was a passenger in that Man Utd team.

If he does come back, that will be with the full support of VK

We should all know by know that if you don't fit what VK wants, then you don't hang around

on reflection, I hope he comes back and scores 20 goals for us and Man Utd fans can then moan they didn't spend 10 million on him

edit: Just to make it clear, that's 20 goals THIS season not across 5 years !!!

Up to the time he joined us, he was averaging a goal in every three games, perfectly respectable.
Since then, he has scored twice in 37 PL appearances ( although many of those will have been s substitute).
The fact is, he is very unlikely to score the goals we need next season.

17 starts plus 3 sub appearances for us and 10 starts plus 7 sub appearances for Man U.

I can’t say I’m Weghorst’s biggest fan, and it’s hard to see him reintegrating with the squad. But, I think it’s probably fair to say that he’s our best centre forward, so some of the criticism of him as a player seems OTT considering he’s much more proven than Rodriguez and Foster.

Not saying we shouldn’t be aiming for better by the way, just a point that he’s probably the best we currently have.

We're in the Premier League. Jay Rodriguez has had successful seasons in the Premier League. Wout Weghorst hasn't. Odd to call him more proven I think

Well one played in a World Cup semi final and turned out for Man Utd pretty consistently for the second half of last season. The other has just had relatively average season in the Championship on a personal level and hasn’t looked Premier League standard for a good few seasons. Maybe more proven was the wrong way to word it as Weghorst hasn’t himself pulled up any trees in the PL, but the point stands that he is currently our best centre forward.

What happened while Weghorst was turning out for Man Utd in the Premier League consistently? I think it was teammates not wanting to pass to him and him not scoring, as he's a proper bad footballer.

Jay on the other hand has proven himself at that level playing in much worse teams.

I don't think there's any risk he won't work hard. Whether or not you're a fan of his it's pretty hard to deny he's a driven player who gives it his all (whether or not that is good enough is another matter).

See this is the problem. You are calling Weghorst a proper bad footballer which is quite obviously not the case. It’s pointless having this conversation if this is the stance that you’re taking. Would Man United’s players pass more to Rodriguez or Foster if they were lining up in their team?

I don’t doubt that Weghorst’s goalscoring record in the PL is very poor, but so is Rodriguez’s. And Foster’s goalscoring record in the Championship is also very poor albeit based on fairly limited appearances.

The point is that for some reason it is acceptable to throw ridiculous criticism at WW, such as being a proper bad player, but a hint of negativity towards any of our other players is generally shouted down on here. It’s quite curious, because they’re all Burnley players and out of our centre forward options he is currently the best.

Well we currently have 3 ‘strikers’ who don’t score goals so again I find it odd that WW is being singled out when he’s got more pedigree than the other two.

It won't happen because some team will take him I suspect on a loan basis again to cover his wages, I wouldn't necessarily draw the conclusion that VK wants him in the unlikely event of a return more he's lumbered with him.

Odd one this. Grandstanding about how you aren't allowed to criticise players who aren't Wout Weghorst doesn't help prove that he's better than a player with a much better record in our league.

I really don't get the view that Weghorst is 'much more proven' in the premier league than Rodriguez either. And it's quite easy to understand why he gets more criticism than Rodriguez when you consider broader factors and contributions to the club. I watched Weghorst playing for Man United and the only things that were consistent about him were his inability to score and it being clear he's nowhere near not good enough for them.

People here praise Ashley Barnes for scoring 6 goals and making a contribution last season but I can easily see Weghorst making a very similar type of contribution in the Prem, yet he's not good enough lol.

Barnes was widely criticised last season on here until his form changed and most people accepted he wouldn't be good enough for the PL next season. People will naturally show much more leeway for a player like Barnes because of his huge contribution to the club over the years.

I’m not grandstanding and I haven’t claimed that WW has a better record in our league. My point is simply that he is arguably the best centre forward at the club, yet he attracts ridiculous criticism such as being a ‘proper bad player’ which simply wouldn’t be fair game if levelled at our other centre forwards.

I think his attitude as much as anything else has turned people against him although to be quite honest I would not elevate him to being our best centre forward.

There was the public spat with Connor Roberts but there’s been enough speculation to suggest it might not be easy for him in our dressing room.

I’d be more than happy to see him go.

It is a shame WW has been on international duty. I think VK will choose to quickly integrate him or ship him out but right now he hasn’t even trained with the other lads. Still is possibly the ideal candidate for VKs system but mentally I can see that being impossible. If we had never had him in a Dyche team that he was totally unsuited for I would be really interested in him joining us. He is a clever footballer and I think that will appeal to VK. He also presses well and that is definitely a plus. Also I can imagine VK getting the Dutch bluntness a bit better than most.

"Arguably" is doing some heavy lifting there
Well of course it is subjective, but the evidence points to him being our best centre forward. If all three were transfer listed today I would be very confident that WW would attract the biggest fee and end up playing at the highest level.

What evidence?

I think his attitude as much as anything else has turned people against him although to be quite honest I would not elevate him to being our best centre forward.

There was the public spat with Connor Roberts but there’s been enough speculation to suggest it might not be easy for him in our dressing room.

I’d be more than happy to see him go.
Yes I can see why people have turned against him but I find this has led to some ridiculously unfair and unsubstantiated criticism of him - such as being a ‘proper bad player’.

The public spat with Roberts seemed to be very much initiated by Roberts himself - although this in itself may suggest WW isn’t popular among the group.

I agree that I would also be more than happy to see him go, with the caveat that we would need to spend a decent fee to bring in a replacement and hopefully an upgrade in that position.
