Re: World cup thread
Pepe is the oldest Portugal player to score at a World Cup (35 years, 124 days). And yet another set-piece goal.

Had Cavani in my fantasy team for the first 3 rounds and took him out for this round. What a mistake! He's a hell of a player though. Would obviously never happen but he's one of those that I'd love at Burnley. Some of the passes he's made during this tournament have been phenomenal. And what a finish for that second goal.

Man for man they are not the best side in this tournament, but neither were Greece (2004) or Portugal (2016),didn't stop them winning major tournaments.Tall Paul wrote:You can all go back to talking about how great Uruguay are again now.

What a shame for Cavani.
Re: World cup thread
When Cristhian Stuani is their back up striker I think they might have a problem with depth of squad.tiger76 wrote:Man for man they are not the best side in this tournament, but neither were Greece (2004) or Portugal (2016),didn't stop them winning major tournaments.

The shift they put in they could be out on their feet by the final. The matches come quite quick now and there is the mental tiredness and travelling to take in also.Spijed wrote:Alas, if Uraguay get to the final it'll mean England have very little chance of winning the World cup due to the sheer gulf in class!

I'm not just thinking of this match. I'm thinking of the style Portugal play and how it would play out against us, especially our defence. I think we'd get men behind the ball and counter Uruguay better than we would Portugal.ElectroClaret wrote:Don't know why you'd want that, Frank.

Can't argue with that their front two are so pivotal, they will be working round the clock to get Cavani fit but it doesn't look good.Tall Paul wrote:When Cristhian Stuani is their back up striker I think they might have a problem with depth of squad.

Ronaldo will have to cry in front of the mirror tonight. Great defending by Uruguay who play as a team.

I only watched about 35 minutes tonight but saw enough to think England would have little chance of beating the Uruguayans who’s defending just gets better as the tournament goes on.

Re: World cup thread
I don't think there's yet been any team to be a clear favourite. They all look to have weaknesses. I've not seen one team this World Cup who has it all covered. England shouldn't be afraid of any team, so long as we defend well. Because from day dot, our defence has been out weakness. Big time.

Re: World cup thread
Yep, that's what I've been saying. When you look at any of today's 4 teams, their back four turn, control and pass much quicker than any of ours. We're defending like a Championship side vs a Premier League side. We've so far faced 2 weak teams and a team B. When we come up against a better attacking threat, we'll know about it so we need to be prepared.Croydon Claret wrote:I think I we can score against anybody, but our defence may be our ultimate undoing
Like you say - given the chance (and space), we can definitely score against anybody. And I think Trippier could be key. If they do their homework, they'll try and put Trippier out of the game because I think he'll be one of our most dangerous players.

Was pointed out earlier squad depth,if Cavani is out for the rest of the tournament he will be impossible to replace like for like. Stuani couldn't hit a barn door at Boro and has a 1 in 8 record at international level.tim_noone wrote:what's Uruguays weakness Frank?

Re: World cup thread
I think we've already covered it. Uruguay play at a nicer pace that I think will suit England. Portugal have trickier players (overall) who will play a faster pace. Of course - Uruguay still have Suarez, which is why I mentioned overall.tim_noone wrote:

Apologies for interjecting, reported as a hamstring injury, tough to recover from before the quarter-final on Friday.tim_noone wrote:Sorry missed your post..... Cavani and Suarez plus they're pretty good defence wise. Cavani went off injured do you know the extent?
The mental toughness of this Uruguayan squad is strong though they are incredibly resilient to setbacks.

Swift accurate attacking and solid organised defence...just the ticket. Doubt we could live with it.FactualFrank wrote:I think we've already covered it.
