Sunderland throwing some serious money at it. Le Fee and Diarra will cost them £55m according to reports. They also look set to spend £20m on a GK from France.

Been a lot of handwringing over a couple of our £15-18m signings missing the mark. If you’re a newly promoted club and you’re spending £20-30m on a player, you’ve definitely got to get those kind of deals right.

No, many fans thought our summer business that season was daft.

Hearing new reports that Brownhill is off...

If true, Philip Billing is the obvious shout as a replacement, but wages/age etc might be a stumbling block there.

They did get a big fee for Bellingham to balance it out a bit. But do doubt they are seemingly spending big

Where too , do you think?. Obviously starting this early training session away from the club, he wouldn’t have been returning to the club for preseason training.
I just hope he had the courtesy to give the club plenty of notice so their plans for a replacement are reasonably advanced.

I think Philip Billing is not what's required, he's not mobile enough off the ball and is the definition of languid, talented ball player in a team that dominates but wouldn't be a fit for us.

I don't think the club will be put on the back foot by his leaving. If we as fans have been expecting it I'm pretty sure they have been planning for some time.

I always think if you can get the midfield right then it’s half the battle. Sunderland with Le Fee and Diarra look to be going some way to doing that, although the size of a transfer fee doesn’t guarantee anything.

I would find the departure of Brownhill very disheartening, though not unexpected.

I'd say disappointing however we might be saying we don't miss him after a couple of months, that's football. Whatever, he's been a great servant and whatever happens will forever be welcome at Burnley.

You'd have thought Sunderland would also have to spend a lot of money on their defence as well. It looked all over the place at times last season.

We've signed Hartman (potentially pushing Humphreys back to central defence) and we've signed Tuanzebe who can play right back or centre back.

I think Esteve is more likely to stay where he is with Humphreys further right in that situation. Humphreys is the more comfortable on either foot.

I'm happy to see them spending £30m per player. If they do that they'll get at most 5 signings of that calibre. No matter how good they are, that won't be enough to make up for the defecit in the rest of the team.

It feels a bit like they are falling into the trap of spending huge money on talents from abroad not knowing if they will adapt.

Why is it shabby?

He’s still under contract until end of June

He may have already told the club his intention.
He may have already signed a new contract with us
Just because the club has confirmed the CJ situation doesn’t mean that they would/have to do the same with Brownhill

I see your point but that means we probably need to sell at least 2 strikers this window (possibly even three).
We only really have 3 central strikers in Foster, Barnes and Houtondji

Therein lies our problem as all of them are a long way off good enough and I would include Flemming in that as well

I have seen a few players doing some private training sessions during the close season as they get ready to return for training at their clubs. I wouldn't read anything into it as players are expected to maintain targeted fitness levels during their holidays...
I think we'll know more on Monday when the Clarets return for preseason..

For us, I thought buying 4-5 £20-£25m players would be a better strategy this year. Quality over quantity. That was sort of before CJ and maybe Browny were off though. Two roles to replace before you start strengthening.

Conversely I think Sunderland would be better at taking our less expensive, broader strengthening approach.

Le Fee is a lot of money. Not a Premier League player based on his first six months, but you’d expect him to get better as he settles in to English football so maybe. The midfielder and keeper look decent.

I agree though, a much higher risk strategy. Get it wrong, or a couple of injuries, and you have problems.

I don’t think we’ll see much of either of those to be honest. We’ll need to play on the counter, which will need pace up front.

If he is off then it’s been a terrible start to the windows for the ITK on transfer posters on here that had people believe both Egan-Riley and brownhill had already signed new deals

I’m a big Billing fan so I’d love to see him here. Take your point about his languid style but I think at certain points we’re just going to need height and heading ability in the box to grab set pieces and he’d be a great asset in that respect.

The important word here is ‘can’. If we remove Hountondji, as he didn’t feature in the Champ, so I’d imagine we’ll look for another move for him, and Barnes, who by all accounts is one for the training pitch and group more than on the pitch, you’re left with the first three. Zeki is not an out and out 9, and I don’t believe he can lead the line on his own, leaving the other 2. You’d probably want someone to be pushing a level above them, with a profile similar to Foster (physical & fast) but more consistent and ‘better’. Flemming will have a big part to play, but some games will undoubtedly need someone who can do the channel chasing, providing an out ball, and Parker might even use him from slightly deeper, if he plays more of a 3-4-2-1 (two inside ‘10s’).

It doesn’t negate from the fact that we have 5 players in that position in the first team squad.

If we are to bring more in then 2-3 off them definitely have to move on.

But the ‘5 players for that position’ comment was discussed and debated in my response, of which you seemingly haven’t understood or misread or ignored! To summarise, I think there is only 2 realistic starting strikers in that 5.

The problem with gambling on Sargent is the fee he will cost, probably looking at close to £20m for him.

I see Luke Jovic is available on a free transfer ;) Roma loaned out Tammy Abraham to Milan last season, I’d be all over that, giving them a bigger loan fee to cover part of his wages.

Does it also include a pre contract agreement to sign Weiss on the cheap as well in two years when Trafford goes to City. Terrible business at that fee.

On Trafford -

I'll be sad to lose him, though I'm not entirely convinced his skill set is what we need in the PL.

For me, there are still a few question marks under the high ball and ability to command his area.

He is exceptional at getting across his line in 1v1s, handling shots, and maintaining concentration.

For me, he's much more suited to play in a team (like Newcastle), where he'll be more needed for the occasional save with less defensive cover or to sweep up, rather than what we're more likely to face next season.

Though I would have liked to have kept him - he goes with my best wishes.

There are so many good number 2 goalies out there who must be chomping at the bit for a No1 PL chance. Or maybe one playing in a foreign league with Claret grandparents

No guarantee that CJ, Brownhill or Trafford would have been good enough in the PL. The gap is huge. CJ and Traff will develop, but, now? Geordies reckon Traff is great with his feet, well, we were spoilt with Muric but I would prefer a Pickford or a Ramsdale in that regard. Great shot stopper, but so is Pope.

At this point I’m not viewing those moves as a bad thing if it turns out none stay.

We've done good buisness so far but losing 2 of the key players from last season will be a blow.

I think we'll get an adequate keeper but we're at risk of seeing another complete squad makeover which isn't really what I wanted. A lot of the team needed upgrading without having to replace your better players.

Loosing three key players from last season with Brownhill, no wonder CJ left knowing Trafford was going to Newcastle , thanks for the teamwork generated last season, but means nothing this season.

Although I am confident Parker can overcome adversity again next season.
