Because other teams / clubs had strengthened season on season and we hadn't for well documented reasons.

Had Dyche stayed, it wouldn't have got as far as the last day to confirm relegation.

Maybe. Maybe not. I think we would not have lost the last game so easily. However, the damage was done by the outgoing board over 3 / 4 years.
