Re: The SUPER CLARETS vs Cardiff City - MATCH THREAD (Carabao Cup)
I’m baffled why Edwards was told to track back when we have 5 at the back and 2 holding midfielders? When he stayed forward he was decent and probably our most threatening player until Tresor came on.
I’m not really baffled, I do know, its because Parker is too darn negative. It affects his league match selections too.
(decent start to the season but in games we hope to win, I expect more positivity)

Conceding possession at home to league one opposition is unforgivable really.
No point getting carried away, majority of that side won’t be close to being a regular, but horrible performance and horrible tactics employed.

An absolutely awful display of football. No intensity whatsoever. Another cup calamity to add to our growing collection.

That 11 should have easily won this match, man for man not one Cardiff player would have been in our starting 11. Barring devastating injuries can’t see Worrell, Sonne, Pires, playing again,

Cardiff deserved the win, they played with passion and togetherness. We just weren’t in the game at all.

Shocking performance all round really, couple of decent cameos, well maybe one! I now know why Broja is not starting in the premier league, no urgency, and certainly not a team performance. Cardiff so much better and deserved it, they could actually pass to each other, which really helps. They were getting round the back both sides, and even went through the middle a couple of times, score should have been more to Cardiff.
It’s hard to believe that performance from a bunch of players who are supposed to be trying to break into the first team!

Parker had a mare tonight, he just got the 11 out of favour players on the pitch with no system or structure.
At no point did he tweak the formation to give our lads the advantage.

47% possession at home against a League 1 side, with £100m+ of players, is shockingly bad.

Re: The SUPER CLARETS vs Cardiff City - MATCH THREAD (Carabao Cup)
Surely Parker was testing out his group of expensively assembled players with a view to a win against a League 1 outfit and also to give some game time and the possibility of slipping into Premier League contention......Edwards, Tresor and Flemming particularly.Goliath wrote: ↑Tue Sep 23, 2025 9:46 pmAs I said before the game. Parker showed no interest in winning that game. Humphreys in midfield was an absolute joke.
There had clearly been absolutely zero preparation for the game in terms of pressing patterns, it was an absolute shitshow from start to finish.
Tresor once again showing he is levels above most of our squad in terms of ability. We probably won't see him in a Burnley shirt again now. I'd much prefer to see him than Edwards.
Maybe he'll be changing his mind on that one after such individual performances.

Re: The SUPER CLARETS vs Cardiff City - MATCH THREAD (Carabao Cup)
2nd half was better, looked like they'd had a bit of a chat at half time. Edwards much improved, Flemming more involved, nice cameo from Trésor. System never looked remotely balanced but it was all about which players needed the minutes rather than displaying a tactical masterclass.
If Trésor is fit enough to do even 20 minutes he should be featuring on the bench on that showing. I'd rather see him coming on to try and save a game than most of the other options we have.
Broja showed glimpses of what he might offer but looks a long way off being match fit. A 20 minute runaround at 4-0 down on Saturday might be his next step.

Who cares we are out of the cup, we don't need distractions.
Carabo Cup isn't our priority.
We got some minutes in the legs and there were some decent performances.
Cardiff are no duck eggs, they've retained the majority of their Championship squad and will no doubt "do a Birmingham" this season.
Cardiff deserved to win and good luck to them.
We have bigger fish to fry.

3-4-3 to 4-2-3-1/4-4-2. I’d say we played a bit better as we created some chances and scored, but it still wasn’t good enough.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Tue Sep 23, 2025 9:59 pmFrom what to what and do you think that gave us the advantage?

Not sure I'd agree Tresor should be making the squad after tonight's cameo but he certainly made more of a case than just about anyone else we used.
Not so much disjointed as disinterested in the first half, and that's unforgiveable. Some of those jokers played like they already know they're off in January.
Good job Barnes is just keeping dressing room spirits up and not taking up a squad place too...

To a degree tho, might be far off the mark but surely he has a set of coaches etc looking after the “second team” making sure they’re ready……he takes their input and then like tonight watches the results on the pitch……Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Tue Sep 23, 2025 9:55 pmParker had a mare tonight, he just got the 11 out of favour players on the pitch with no system or structure.

I’d be horrified if I were Parker thinking this is what our “back up team” are producing…….

Who’d of thought, one of our biggest worries would be Ekdal getting injured, based on tonight I wouldn’t be confident in either of the back 3 replacing him.
Laurent seemingly above all 3 in the pecking order.
Tuanzebe best of the 3 tonight but I’m stretching saying that.

Re: The SUPER CLARETS vs Cardiff City - MATCH THREAD (Carabao Cup)
Too many overreactions. I agree that players should have done better, but I think the formation and shape was all wrong. Two midfielders had a hard time in first half and I have no idea what was the idea behind our press attempts.
Re: The SUPER CLARETS vs Cardiff City - MATCH THREAD (Carabao Cup)
I think we were trying to replicate a league performance and tactics, hence the push for the wingers to tuck in and support at the back rather than playing wide expansive football. I sort of get it, these players need to be ready to slot into that system
Should still be winning though

Re: The SUPER CLARETS vs Cardiff City - MATCH THREAD (Carabao Cup)
I honestly couldn't tell you what formation they were supposed to be playing, they were all over the shop.
We improved in the 2nd half but i thought that was as much to do with Cardiff tiring. Being allowed so many subs helped them out no end.
Re: The SUPER CLARETS vs Cardiff City - MATCH THREAD (Carabao Cup)
This would be fair if he'd given them a chance by drilling them for thr game like he would a league game. He clearly hadn't. They had no idea when or where to press. It was a team that had just been thrown out there.Billyblah wrote: ↑Tue Sep 23, 2025 9:57 pmSurely Parker was testing out his group of expensively assembled players with a view to a win against a League 1 outfit and also to give some game time and the possibility of slipping into Premier League contention......Edwards, Tresor and Flemming particularly.

We’re not carrying that performance into the City game though. We’ve been competitive in every league game this season so far. I could well be wrong but I don’t think we’ll see the horror shows we have in previous games.

I just don’t get that one at all. Hardly anyone of note on the bench. When substitutions were made they seemed baffling to say the least. Banal was no match for Ugochukwu. Flemming and especially Edwards had improved immensely as the game progressed. And to bring Clark on for Flemming was too bizarre for words. It’s almost as if Parker didn’t want us to progress to the next round! Totally bonkers!

Re: The SUPER CLARETS vs Cardiff City - MATCH THREAD (Carabao Cup)
Just got back from game and not to many positives to take in truth.
No issue with formation if pires and sonne had performed as wingbacks , but they rarely got into a position to this and this was down to cardiffs excellent pressing they pressed to a man and as a team , we on the other hand did not , pointless Fleming chasing defenders down if he’s not being backed up by broja and Edward’s .
We struggled to look up and play forward , took the easy ball sideways and backwards to often, and this was caused by in large part people being to static and not seeking open space ( Cullen does this so well ) Hannibal took this on later in game and was more positive ,
Broja had a couple of chances and seems to be still getting fitness and match sharpness.. still to early to call but on the surface if we could have got Sargent for the same money it does beg the question ?
Big les looked slow and off it, in truth at times we had a back 6 with him dropping back that far.
Humphries is definitely off being the player he was last year so again i can only assume he’s on a journey back. … also of some concern was that their weren’t many leaders on the pitch in terms of communication to each other. worral and Hannibal being the exception.
Edward’s carried over his derby performance into this game and apart from two moments was largely absent.
Overall a very poor evening, and when a highlight is a ten minute cameo from Tresor , truth is that says more about everyone else’s performance.

Re: The SUPER CLARETS vs Cardiff City - MATCH THREAD (Carabao Cup)
The truth is league and FA cups don't matter anymore, and i would kill for one of those at wembley.
It speaks more of the modern footballer, they were lazy tonight, couldn't give a toss.
How can of them knock on the managers door and ask what do they have to do to get into the first team after tonight?
I was upset about PNE last year, but who care now?
That's the truth.

no disrespect to anyone who paid to watch that, but a lot of fans disregard this as tin pot.
been going on for years now, stupid sponsors, and losing credibility each year.
Pointless saying its a route to bigger things, when even the big clubs just go through the motions of meeting their committments to taking part, even they are under pressure to do well in the league.
I know it gets a wee bit more focus in the very latter stages, but the colossal apathy towards this competition initially is proof that it gets in the way of the real bread and butter for clubs. Thats why hardly anyone cared less when we were beaten by Accy. our aim is survival in the prem, NOTHING else matters to the owners or the management or players.

I’m not convinced there was a lack of effort.
We just looked like a side with little chemistry, that’d be thrown together for the dual purpose of getting some minutes in legs and resting the starting XI. It was emphasised with there being a few square pegs in round holes as the game progressed.
I’m not particularly worried or arsed and I say that having done an 80-mile round trip to watch it.

Re: The SUPER CLARETS vs Cardiff City - MATCH THREAD (Carabao Cup)
If you can make 11 changes for a cup game then surely you can at least take it seriously. You are hardly going to wear out the precious legs of the 1st XI if you progress.
Re: The SUPER CLARETS vs Cardiff City - MATCH THREAD (Carabao Cup)
The whole 'legs in the minutes excuse' is so much nonsense I can't believe people fall for it. In about a week's time, they'll be back to where they were at the start of this week and then needing 'NEW minutes in the legs' to get up to speed coz they'll only have trained.
That was clearly an apathetic performance from most of them, knowing they've not done enough to get in the PREM starting XI and will be slogging it out in training until the next pathetic cup game or there's a forced change where they might get some game time. It wouldn't bother me too much, but they're making millions to go through the motions, basically! Still trying to get my head around why I put such individuals on a pedestal and put my time, money & effort into it, when the harsh reality is this. They should be ashamed of themselves, but I bet they aren't that arsed in the end. A player earning millions, like Broja, can perform as he has on such money - scandalous! If only we could all slowly develop into our jobs and do shite yet get paid millions.

I don't see many over reactions tbh, just a bunch of ****** off people who watched a bunch of player's going through the motions with little intensity or effort for extremely large parts of the game!
That for me and it appears a few others is unforgivable unfortunately

One thing struck me is that Tresor looked a lot fitter than in his previous cameos.
Maybe the lad is getting somewhere near full fitness - fingers crossed.

I turned it off after 25 minutes last night so didn’t see the goals or outcome…….
Having read the reviews this morning it sounds like we were awful with too many players looking like they couldn’t have cared less?!?!
A strange way to stake your claim in the starting 11 for the weekend……

More than a shade of the cup defeat to Preston, a bunch of players thrown together who looked hopelessly out of depth. I know they will have trained together for the game, but there we are.
Anyway, I’m over it now. Hope the players are mulling over their performances and kicking themselves (though they’d probably miss) or satisfied with their showing in a handful of cases.
I’m making an assumption that Tresor is being treated with kid-gloves for a very good reason and that Mike is being protected from disclosing those reasons.

Re: The SUPER CLARETS vs Cardiff City - MATCH THREAD (Carabao Cup)
Only watched on the tv. First half was lacklustre. Looked like Cardiff came with brightness and invention and a game plan which was executed with enthusiasm.
We didn’t have the cohesion to match it and impose our game.
2nd hal, we looked like we had (hopefully) taken a bollocking and looked more at it. Fantastic strike from Flemming gave us a foothold.
Some disappointing performances but one or two glimmers of ability to ponder.
